That's not even a tip of the iceberg. There are so many problems with syntax, interchangeable verbs, nouns, pronouns, etc. and non-standard forms of speech that the bar for entry is pretty much nill. You could probably grunt like a neanderthal and still get your message across just as well as any fat-mouthed politician. An abstract level for entry may seem like a blessing but trying to articulate your speech can become a confusing chore if it's not your native language. Even then, most people just resort to non-standard speech.

Hmh. I dont think you can say that. I mean, I think it depends on the languages you already know. I have heard, as an example, that when you know Swedish, it's easy to learn German.

I agree. Here's an example: the verb 'love' in english there is a few variations (love, loves, will love, would love, have loved, loved, loving, etc.) while in portuguese the verb 'amar' there are more than 30 variations (amar, amando, amado, amo, amas, ama, amamos, amais, amam, amava, amavas, amávamos, amáveis, amavam, etc.)
But I think it's relative what language it's easy for you to master.

Well, for the language on-topic subject, my first language is Portuguese (and I thought I was the only one Brazilian here at first...), I'm learning English and I know a bit of Japanese. But, like, not enough to, like, play any japanese game without a guide close to me or something.
I guess Portuguese must be really difficult to master when you aren't a native. My English teacher is American and he is learning Portuguese while he's here...and, boy, is hell hard for him to get the grip of things...poor guy.
I don't think it's full of unnecessary grammar rules, though: it's just a lot more elaborate, which means sentences could get prettier if you know what to write, and how to do it, also...but that's about it, I guess...
Now that I read this, it sounds kind of silly...maybe I should, like, work on my English regarding explaining things.

Not quite, but I've realized that surpassing my goal or trilingualism could be possible, as I've been using this handy-dandy tool to learn Esperanto (as of last night). The grammar and phonology are completely regular, so once you have the basics down it's really simple to get the hang of. If you're already fluent in an Indo-European language, it's easy as shit to learn, and if not, studies show that knowing Esperanto makes other Indo-European languages easy as shit to learn.
I've been worshipping it for the last 26 hours or so.

(Nice collection of smilies, I must say!)So yeah, languages. I'm norwegian so that's naturally my native tounge. I enjoy writing and reading, so I put some effort in mastering norwegian, both bokmål and nynorsk. Then it's english, which I think I master pretty okay. I understand it almost perfectly and I belive I can write pretty good. Speaking english is another matter
I also learned some basic german over the course of three years, but never took it very seriously. I can understand some very simple sentences, but that's about it.
I remember wanting to learn japanese when I was younger, as I've been a Nintendo-freak for as long as I can remember. That part died in me when I learned about the otaku culture on the Internet

) is actually pretty worried that Norwegian might die in the near future. After all, it's only spoken by 5 million people or so, and most of these use English on a regular basis. The council is worried that as so many Norwegian use English almost just as much as their own language, we are just a gentle push away from tipping over to just using English. I can understand their worry. Blending English words into everyday Norwegian has become really common all over the country. And when I sometimes forget how to formulate a Norwegian sentence, but know how I would have done it in English, I get pretty worried myself

I'm sick of our language being used all over the world. Other countries have spent so many hard, long years making new ways for us to talk, and they're just ruining it. In Greece and Cyprus, everyone seems to know English, which is annoying coz I like Greek better

Maybe if you start with nihil knowledge and end up with an academic vocabulary. But English today is so entwined with all of our cultures that every kid and his grandma gets lots of English shot at them all the time - when you're "officially" starting to learn English, you often already know a lot.
Well, at least in Europe this is usually the case.

If Chinese lessons are being offered at your school, I'd suggest you go for it; from what I've heard Chinese grammar structure is very similiar to Japanese, and learning two languages is better than one.

The grammar structure is actually pretty different from each other. Chinese people here have a pretty tough time learning Japanese mainly because of the grammar structure, and they only manage to get somewhat by because they know for the most part how to write kanji.
Chinese grammar is more similar to English, if anything, and Japanese is similar to Korean.

I don't think norwegian will die. Of course, we get new words from english (even ones we already have in norwegian), but seriously I don't think that we'll ever use english that much as an oral language (when I look at the average english marks in my class i doubt we'd be able to that).
But oh so stupid it sounds with english words in norwegian, and I can't imagine how funny it sounds for an english person to hear us use bits of english (probably kind of like when japanese use english words when they talk and sing, and that sounds just embarassingly stupid).
