Check this article out:

Quote:
TOKYO (AFP) – A Japanese man has enlisted hundreds of people in a campaign to allow marriages between humans and cartoon characters, saying he feels more at ease in the "two-dimensional world."

Comic books are immensely popular in Japan, with some fictional characters becoming celebrities or even sex symbols. Marriage is meanwhile on the decline as many young Japanese find it difficult to find life partners.

Taichi Takashita launched an online petition aiming for one million signatures to present to the government to establish a law on marriages with cartoon characters.
Within a week he has gathered more than 1,000 signatures through the Internet.

"I am no longer interested in three dimensions. I would even like to become a resident of the two-dimensional world," he wrote.
"However, that seems impossible with present-day technology. Therefore, at the very least, would it be possible to legally authorise marriage with a two-dimensional character?"

Befitting his desire to be two-dimensional, he listed no contact details, making it impossible to reach him for comment to explain if his campaign is serious or tongue-in-cheek.

But some people signing the petition are true believers.
"For a long time I have only been able to fall in love with two-dimensional people and currently I have someone I really love," one person wrote.
"Even if she is fictional, it is still loving someone. I would like to have legal approval for this system at any cost," the person wrote.
Japan only permits marriage between human men and women and gives no legal recognition to same-sex relationships.
Japan's fans of comic books, or "manga," sometimes go to extremes.

Earlier this month, a woman addicted to manga put out an online message seeking to kill her parents for asking her to throw away comic books that filled up three rooms.
Prime Minister Taro Aso is an avid fan of manga and recently complained that he has been too busy to read comic books since taking office.

STOP THE DISCRIMINATION!

CARTOONS IS PEOPLE TOO!

Also... I know (or think) that this is in a different vein from what's going on in this article but I couldn't help but be reminded of those things people have in their sigs saying that they "married" various Ace Attorney characters.

Also, WTF at being tired of living in 3 dimensions? Also, WTF at marrying fictional people? I mean, they don't exist! You might as well marry your imaginary friend....

To be fair, there have been a lot of "marriages", whether to other users or fictional PW characters on this very site already. It's not as far a step ahead as you might think.

I can understand the whole fetish thing and wanting to have sex with a two dimensional character. I mean, come on, you're about as likely to get with a cartoon character as you are a porn star. Why anyone would want to marry an anime character is a different matter. They're all psycho bitches! There is no way in hell I'm spending my entire life with Misato, Twilight Suzuka, or Cammy. Those gals are craaaaaaaaaaazy.

I also just realized that if marriages to fictional characters are honored, that means fictional marriages must be honored as well. That means no Bulmas, Masakis, Ray Beamses, and NO MA RACERS for you. No fan fictions about a divorce either. If it isn't canon it didn't happen!

I imagine it will wear off before long. After all, how will the to-be-weds establish that the characters they want to marry want to marry them? Serious or not, I doubt such a law will be passed. Besides, there will almost certainly be multiple people with eyes for the same characters. I suppose I can understand the position, given that were they real people, there's a good chance that some of us would develop feelings for some of the characters. Still, there is almost no chance of such a law passing.

I know that, but it's in the same line of thought, isn't it? It's an amusing idea, so people do it - and some people just.. crash through the sanity gates while doing so.

So what If a person loves an unreal person? You have no idea how hard it is to not be with the one you love, EVER. Im all for this, In fact. I love an unreal person. Damn it, This love is true. I dont care if I am crazy, or its because Im an aspie but. Im in love. And I can wait a lifetime to be with my love.
I have been studying this concept for years and have come up with lΩvemega.

LΩvemega.

Love it seems to drain away.
Fading faster every day.
Say again that you are real,
I want to touch I want to feel.
I have given everything.
Nothing more or time to bring.
Yet you have to return,
At the end, this lesson I've learned.
Loving she who does not exist
My confused heart cannot resist.
Why must life be so cruel?
Are these the tears of a fool?
Were you real or just a thought?
From this my love has fought.
Nothings left, I gave it all,
So bring the end of LΩvemegas call.
No one but you, nothing more to hold on,
Without you, I would fade till I'm gone.
Yesterday was, the only life that I had,
No one but me, now I am driven mad.

I'm trying really hard, but I just can't get that...

Maybe I'm too close-minded. :lana:

General Luigi's and Bad Player's points hold the truth here, in my opinion.

As to actually add something of my own to this: I guess the need to flee from a 3-dimensional world is understandable. May as well be related with the wish of escaping the boring reality: one of the reasons games are so popular. Although games are a part of reality, the characters...well, they just aren't. They don't exist in a way that we could develop an actual relationship with them or share feelings...or anything to that effect. Being married to one would be almost the same as not being. They would not be able to bring you happiness, nor you would be able to make them happy.

It is unfortunate, but it is the truth. Bitter as Godot's coffee.

So, in other words, you're basically saying that it's not really a desire to escape the 3-dimensional world, but rather to just escape our world into another, even if that other world also had 3 dimensions?

Ok, this is what they should do. Japan should accept the request to legalize the marriage of people to fictional characters BUT the fictional character has to accept their hand in marriage in an official publication by the original author/creator/copyright holder. The reasoning behind this is point you're making. The two partners have to be willing. This way, tons of dumbasses will spend a ton of money bribing creators into doing this, or will be arrested for relentlessly stalking them. Those people will then be in jail or poor and will no longer be around to act like complete idiots. AND THE ENTIRE WORLD WINS!

When the boundaries of what constitues "love" have been so lost in translation that it means being engaged to cartoon characters, you know it's time to crackdown on the nut cases and establish some kind of order.

This isn't really related to my thread but...

Quote:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/3369609/Teenager-changes-name-to-Captain-Fantastic.html

Teenager changes name to Captain Fantastic

The record-breaking name, now thought to be the world's longest, was the idea of music graduate George Garratt, 19.
He changed his name by deed poll online for £10 last week.
Captain Fantastic said: "I wanted to be unique.

"I decided upon a theme of superheroes."

Captain Fantastic joins a number of people with unusually long names, including Rhoshandiatellyneshiaunneveshenk Koyaanisquatsiuth Williams, a girl born in Texas in 1984.

The teenager, from Glastonbury, Somerset, added that while he thought the new name was "crazy", his grandmother was no longer speaking to him.
Last month in Italy, a couple was banned from naming their son Friday - Venerdi - because the name could expose him to ridicule.
Named after the manservant of Daniel Defoe's famous novel Robinson Crusoe, the court ordered the boy's name be changed to Gregorio, named after the saint's day on which he was born.

In February, a judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so she could change her name from Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.
Other banned names include Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit.
In New Zealand again, last year a couple was banned from naming their baby 4Real, so they chose Superman instead.

I half-expected the "human/animal marriage" to come out before this one.
.....
I don't know what's more disturbing: the fact that legally marrying a fictional character could actually be considered or the fact that I have actually made a list concerning this and other issues.

I read this article on another forum I was on and I just cracked up! I mean seriously? Ok people can have crushes on fictional characters (yeah I do. 6 different characters from 5 different shows to be exact) but to legalise marriage to them? That's really stupid. Can Otaku's be that lonely? My friend and I always joke about my crush from a particular anime that I like, and she teases me that there is no one else for me but really I think that it's ridiculous that people want to marry a fictional character.

Oh and as for Mr 'Captain Fantastic'? Psh, I could come up with a better name than that! :edgy:
