I've loved this song ever since I first heard it on the movie Airplane!. Went to Circuit City earlier to see if they still had the one copy of TWEWY, and we were about to leave, and then I heard this song and followed it to where it was being played. But it was near the end, so I'm listening to the whole thing now. :P

This particular recording uses actual cannons--not loaded, obviously. The overture itself is meant to depict the Battle of Borodino, a one-day battle between the Russian and French armies in--you guessed it--the War of 1812. Both sides suffered very heavy casualties, though the Russians ultimately withdrew--leading the pursuing French further from their supply lines. A third of what remained of Napoleon's Grand Army was lost that day. Though the French were able to occupy Moscow after the Russians retreated, they were driven out before the worst of the Russian winter came.
