So I suppose, based on Croik's wonderful translation, we can assume he's some sort of artist?

That would be an awsome way to reference a character from Apollo Justice.

Good point.

So, based off of the 'time is money' translation and that, I've decided he's either a poor artist or a wealthy but very cheap owner of art.

I'd say I was leaning toward the latter, because it's really more probable, but for some reason, he just doesn't look rich to me.

Definatly arich owner of art, he looks just like the kind of person who would say, "This is the original copy of (insert name of priceless art) which is Blah, Blah, blah." or something.

Is that just the translation of his Japanese name or is it his confirmed English name? I figured the localization was farther in the future than this...

I say he's an art-dealer/prick by day, hippie/gyspsy/fortune-teller by night. He's either just unhelpful or he's a suspicious person. If he's shady, I'd love to see a reference to Laurice Drew thrown in, but Drew wasn't mainstream, shall we say, so he's not likely to pop up unless Mr Zinc is caught up in the forging business.

Is he in the first case?

Plus, in that screenshot his sleeves aren't shaded. That's really been bugging me.

Well, I don't know much about Chemistry in Japan, but I'd imagine that since science is pretty much international, Zinc White may be the direct translation? But since it works in English too maybe they'll just keep the name. I dunno.

Also, he seems to be in the second case, not the first.

We cater to all kinds in that thread. Sadly, we don't have enough awesomeness powers to make all the characters as cracktastic as him. Plus, that would get old real fast.

For those of you who are wondering, Zinc White is his name in the Japanese game: ジンク・ホワイト
So there's a low chance of relation to Redd White, since his Japanese name was Masaru Konaka, but I'm still having a hard time chalking it up to total coincidence, if only because those "objecting statues" have always given off a Bluecorp vibe to me. And I mean, he's got the fing-bling...
I'm sorry, fing-bling? Did that... come out of my keyboard???

Further speculation on his name: ジンク would be pronounced more like Jink than Zinc, and I don't see an official romanization of the name anywhere. If it were "Jink" rather than "Zinc" it could be a reference to "Jinx"? :yogi:

Well, JapaneseGIRL's initial explanation seemed to indicate that his name was similar to the Japanese words for the compound "Zinc White", which is also (and probably better?) known as Zinc Oxide. I managed to find a Japanese periodic table, but the kanji for Zinc doesn't look anything like anything from his name. :yuusaku: For reference: 亜鉛 is what I found on the periodic table for Zinc.

I know plenty about Chemistry, but only western conventions for naming compounds. I don't know anything about how it works in Japan, and I don't know any Japanese so this is about as far as I've been able to figure out. Perhaps Croik or someone can give us a better explanation?

Hm, if there's an actual compound called Zinc White then I suppose that's more likely than "Jink." But yeah, the kanji for zinc doesn't look like his Chinese name either. Weird.
Guess we'll just have to see. It's probably Zinc, I suppose.

Zinc Oxide, in Japanese: 酸化亜鉛 【さんかあえん】 (n) zinc oxide (ZnO)

In Japanese, there is no "zi" sound just like there is no "si" sound. So in order to write Zinc it would have to be "Jinku." If it were Jinx, it would be "Jinkusu".

I think the combination of "Jinku" and White make it obvious it's supposed to be Zinc White, in reference to zinc oxide.

As for why it doesn't match the actual kanji for zinc oxfide, it's because the kanji picked for that Chinese article were probably picked to match the pronounciation of his name and not the meaning.

Zinc oxide isn't soluble in water. It's sometimes a food additive in cereals or rubber goods.

"Zinc white is used as a pigment in paints and is more opaque than lithopone, but less opaque than titanium dioxide. It is also used in coatings for paper. Chinese white is a special grade of zinc white used in artists' pigments. Because it absorbs both UVA and UVB rays of ultraviolet light, zinc oxide can be used in ointments, creams, and lotions to protect against sunburn and other damage to the skin caused by ultraviolet light (see sunscreen). It is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB absorber that is approved for use as a sunscreen by the FDA, and is completely photostable. It is also a main ingredient of mineral makeup."

Is he an American character? (assuming blondes are usually foreign people in Japanese media etc and the whole Garyuu/Gavin thing) Likewise if they wanted to relate to zinc oxide in some way they could have easily decided not to use "White".

Hmm... well if he's an art dealer and zinc oxide is a pigment in paint, I guess that's a connection. A rather odd one at that.

Your silliness has given me an interesting idea! (White powder -> drugs -> drug smuggling -> ART smuggling) What might be the significance of a dealer in rare artwork being involved in a murder? Perhaps there is a sinister secret wrapped up in whatever works of art Zinc White is transporting into Japan. He might have been transporting something illegally or perhaps someone was trying to steal something... (!) and Blond Glasses guy got mixed up in it.

Speaking of stealing... in the trailer Mikumo is seen with Edgey and Gumshoe next to the elevator! So she's going to show up in this case, and as she's being built up as a "master thief" I wouldn't be at all surprised if she somehow tries to get her hands on some of Zinc's valuables...

Yay silliness! :DDD (I said that because I was reminded of that weird "white powder" shenanigan in 4-2, yeah)

That sounds VERY plausible.

And the way he holds his hands together in his newest character art looks like a gun.

"BANG! Yer dead! That's wut ya get fer stealin' mah arts!"

(Though the murder looks like blunt trauma.... the writers aren't that original with causes of death, are they? XD)
