People like pairings because they like them. Whether or not it has solid evidence to back it up or not, that in itself is circumstantial. You don't prefer a pairing over the other because one is more logical or more canonized, right? You base it on your own personal tastes. If your favorite pairing just so happens to be canon, then you got lucky.
My OTP is Edgeworth/Phoenix, but I know very well that it's not canon. Even so, I still support it.
