All of these games are amazing. The original Paper Mario was one of the first games I ever beat (I actually beat Paper Mario the day before the strategy guide came in the mail...) I actually prefer the second one, it's a lot deeper but still a lot of fun. Super Paper Mario was a good game, but it wasn't Paper Mario. Imagine a real Paper Mario on Wii with motion action commands...

Am I the only one who finds the Paper Mario games BETTER than Super Mario RPG?

I've never played SMRPG, but the Paper Mario games are still awesome. =D
And I'm gonna have to disagree with you when you say that Super Paper Mario wasn't really Paper Mario. Sure, the battle system was different and everything, and there was a lot more platforming involved, but... I don't know, it still just felt like a Paper Mario game to me, with the cute and colorful graphics, nice music, lots of partners, and great characters and storyline. =)

Speaking of which, Mr. L ROCKS. Just when I thought Luigi couldn't get any more awesome. XD

You kidding? I recently played Super Mario RPG after hearing about how "amazing a game" it is and how "the Mario RPGs went downhill from it". And... well... I think some people need to take off the nostalgia tinted glasses.

The plot was nothing special, particularly the villains. You meet the final boss ONLY at the very end of the game. He has no build up, no reason for being evil, no character development whatsoever. For that matter, neither do any of your partners with the exception of Mallow. The gameplay was often clunky and... it was just not a very nice looking game. I realize it was undoubtedly good for SNES graphics, but a simpler, more stylized version would have looked better than that pseudo-3D stuff they went for. I will hand it to them that they freshened up the traditional RPG battle system with the action commands, but Paper Mario took those and improved on them. It also got rid of the random numbers and stuff for damage and experience, and simplified them (which I think makes things smoother and more enjoyable).

Really, I think Super Mario RPG was good for setting the foundation of what a Mario RPG should be like, and I'm sure for its time it was good. But it really hasn't aged well compared to its successors. The Paper Mario series took the idea and improved on it immensely, with more engaging stories, more interesting characters, better humor, and better gameplay controls and graphics (well the last one comes naturally).

The best part of the Paper Mario series, In My Opinion (And I KNOW I'll get slaughtered for this), was the Soundtrack... Particularily the Bosses.

In the first game, every boss had a theme to them, that somehow reflected their own character.

Boss 0: Bowser. Okay, maybe it DOESN'T COUNT since it's not a "Battle Theme", but the same song that appears when he first does...
Boss 1: Koopa Bros.: This was AWESOME for them! Heck, their "Appearance" music was cool, and their Battle Theme was even better!
Boss 2: Tutankoopa: This one has a strange theme... somewhat mystical, yet bada$$ as well... Goes great with the two parts to him: "I'm a tough Boss" and "We're in a pyramid".
Boss 3: Tubba Blubba: I don't have to explain this guy, do I? The theme was awesome, and SOMEHOW, I felt that it went well with the fight in the tower. Heh...
Boss 4: General Guy: It's Suits the "Toy" theme they were going for with the stage... the only issue is that the loop occurs after approx. TWELVE SECONDS!!!
Boss 5: Lava Piranha: Nice theme for him... I personally prefer his Appearance Theme, but... Meh!
Boss 6: Huff n' Puff: ... It fits with the kind've "Mystical Cloud World" feel, I guess... But I don't like this one NEARLY as much as some of the others...
Boss 7: Crystal King: I like the... umm... I guess you can call it the "Feel" of this boss battle theme... yeah!
Final Boss: Bowser: Awesome theme, you just get the feeling of "This is the Final Battle!" while listening to this one.

PM:TTYD has... probably the weakest soundtrack of the three games, but only because of how almost all the Boss Music Songs have a sort of "Dark" sound to them... I'll post all the themes anyways, but there are only THREE I like, and only ONE of the three, I listen to regularily. :gymshoe:

Boss 1: Hooktail/Gloomtail/Bonetail: There isn't really anything special about this theme... for TWO different Bosses, alright, this would've been good, but for crying out loud, GIVE BONETAIL A DIFFERENT THEME!!!
Recurring Miniboss (starts at Chapter 2): Shadow Sirens: Not a bad theme at all! A bit playful, actually...
Boss 0, Boss 2, and Boss 7: Lord Crump and Magnus von Grapple 1.0/2.0: I don't know why, but I LOVE this theme! Probably because it's not at all Dark in it's feel, but it just makes the battle more fun with an awesome theme.
Boss 3: Macho Grubba: The theme has a strange feel to it... but it just doesn't sound too much like a theme... but Grubba STILL upholds the tradition of the third boss in each Paper Mario game being my favorite... AND HE CREATED EDGEWORTH! :butzthumbs:
Boss 4: Doopliss: Doopliss's theme was pretty cool, and while it was semi-spooky, it also has a bit of a "Carnival" feel to it, which made it interesting.
Boss 5: Cortez: Not BAD but... I don't think it suited him all that well, personally... There was no "Pirate" or "Ghost" feel to this...
Boss 6: Smorg: This boss was fun to fight against, and the theme was pretty good... though a bit bland... 'cept for 0:26 to 0:29. I liked that part...
Boss 8: Grodus: I always want to say "HI TECHNICAAAAAL!" whenever I hear this... Strange... heh...
Boss 9: Bowser & Kammy Koopa: This one was pretty awesome... But lets face it, Bowser has ALWAYS had awesome themes!
Final Boss: The Shadow Queen: 3 Themes, all epic in their sound... But... did she REEEEEALLY need three different themes!? She could've re-used the second for the third battle or vice versa, COME ON!

Thanks a lot for all the links, I had no idea all these themes were on Youtube :phoenix: I'm a tremedous fan of the N64 Paper Mario, but as I'm new to these forums (and since I haven't been very active) I didn't even know this thread existed. Actually, my username on most forums is Tutankoopa, dunno why I didn't use it here, actually. So yeah, I thought I'd share this link with you guys, but as far as I know it's already been posted :payne: It's a brilliant page, with lots of sprites and info about the game. Check it out at http://www.rpgclassics.com/shrines/n64/papermario/

I'm currently playing my Virtual Console-version of Paper Mario, and the challenge this time around is playing through the whole game with only 10 HP. So far, so good - I just beat Lava Pirahna earlier this week, but I guess I'll have to raise my stats some for The Master and Kent C. Koopa, as those are really hard.

One of mye favourite secret in the game - after taking out the Crystal King, take a nap at the Inn in the penguin town. When you wake up, Santa Claus will have left you some presents. Sweet!

Items and Watt make Kent C. Koopa easier, but he's still a pain in the butt. D:

My favorite boss from each game...

Paper Mario: Probably Huff N. Puff. He was the only boss that gave me a lot of trouble, but he was still fun.

TTYD: Shadow Queen, because she was SO much more challenging than Bowser in the previous game. She caught me off guard and it took me FOREVER to beat her. Man, did it feel sweet when I finally did.

Super Paper Mario: I haven't finished it, but Mimi was pretty memorable.

Super Paper Mario is a good game: an amazing one, in fact. It's just not a traditional Paper Mario game, which is what I meant. It got the style and such down, but I still want a "normal" Paper Mario for Wii. And yes, Mr. L kicks ass.

I'd actually consider SPM a spin-off game. It tries to be its older brothers but it's not quite. Aw.... Poor Super Paper Mario. If only the onlder siblings had been nicer to it...

Anyway, Hmmm... SMRPG. Great game. Great game for its time, no matter what you say about it! *leers at Regy* Well, I guess by today's standards it isn't exactly Final Fantasy (Hah...), but I remember when I was a young lad of age six I would sneak into my brother's room and play. Oh, yes, I'd risk that. Good times. *takes off nostalgia glasses, CSI style*

The best part of the Paper Mario games had to be the distinction of all the levels. I mean there was a freaking toybox! Good times. The soundtrack was pretty good, very playful. But definitely, the lest memorable/useful party member: Watt. He just didn't shine in particular in my memory - I mean he was just a spark, which weren't memorable at all in the Mario games of old. At least SMRPG had some original characters.

In almost every run on Youtube that I find, people use Watt for most battles... especially against Bowser. The two most used ones, in fact, seem to be Bow and Watt.

I enjoyed the original and the Super version on the Wii. I mean come on it had Luigi playable AND he was important plotwise too :garyuu: that just makes it awesome.

I've not played the thousand year door but it should be good if it's anything like the first it's gonna be good. That said I think Mario RPG's in general are relatively good, though I'm struggling to get to grips with the 7 stars N64 one but then again I'm new and I find it a pain to play.

According to my research... Watt is most likely something called a "Lil' Sparky". :scientific:

By the way, my most-used partner in Paper Mario was Goombario. I got to be pretty darn good at Multibonk. :)

And in TTYD my favorite partner was Vivian~ <3

I tend to find a LOT of people liked Vivian... My main currently (Since I'm playing TTYD), is Goombella, because she has "Tattle". Tattle is awesome... Well, at least, upon it FIRST being used... Heh...

In Paper Mario... I THINK my main was Bow... And in Super Paper Mario, my main is Carrie... SHUT UP, IT COUNTS! *runs off subbing*

Nah, but seriously, using Carrie, the game is SO EASY TO WIN! :gymshoe:

Nope, it got easy...

... Maybe even easier.

In fact, for my SECOND SPM run, I did both Pits BEFORE I beat the game.

The first pit was done... I'm not exactly sure, but I know I had Dashell before I first went to Sammer Kingdom, because I didn't want the "Walk through Emptiness" to take too long.

The FLOPSIDE one, I did after I came back from being sent to The Underwhere...

As I said before, I have developed four strategies to make the pits easy... REALLY easy.

Here's my ultimate strategy for it:

The "Bowser & Carrie Strategy": This is, by far, the best strategy for completing the Pits. The reason why is because if you use Carrie, you don't actually have to be on the GROUND to use Bowser's Flame. Jump up while on Carrie, and Bowser can still use the flame! This is perfect for complicated enemies above you.

For the battle with Shadoo, use this strategy. Against Luigi, there is NO PROBLEMS. Against Dark Bowser, same thing. Against PEACH... a bit of trouble unless you jump and flame her. And Mario? No problem.

Why does Carrie let you do that? I thought it was simply throwing stuff.

Edit: NO! Carrie is the magic thing that gives you a platform...I see it allows you to stand on something so you can breath fire?

You got it! This ALSO lets Peach use her Parasol Shield ANYWHERE, which is perfect against Dark Fire, Boomerang, and Hammer Bros.!

And yes, Luigi's Super Jump can be done on the platform as well... This is because the game assumes you're standing completely still, even when you're not. Of course, in Sammer Kingdom, this gets complicated against most enemies, since hopping onto Carrie takes some time...

Ha ha ha... Oh, by the way, even Sammer Kingdom can be easy, if you know how to do things right!

For about 90 of the rounds, use Bowser & Dashell. Run off the left side of the stage, off the steps, and go back a few feet... Use your flame on the steps. If it hits, go back little by little. Eventually, you'll find a specific "Spot", where, if you use your flame, it will hit anything on the first step.

Now, use the flame On-And-Off. Eventually, the enemy will fall into the flames, and die... It's hilarious!

Against the tiny enemies, just START with a flame!!! they tend to run so fast, that they run right into it!

On one occasion, I used the flame, it jumped over it, AND ME! THEN IT JUMPED BACK OVER ME AND HIT THE FLAME! It was hilarious! :gymshoe:

If you are low on health, here's another strategy: Using Mario &... Well, anyone at the start... Flip around. Assuming your opponent can't flip, run to the far left or far right of the ENTIRE area (To the left or right of the doors). Next, use Dottie, and shrink yourself. Finally, switch straight to Bowser, without flipping. It'll automatically flip you, but you'll still be small... If you walk to where the Sammer Guy is, he will just be walking back and forth... Also, the Nonjoe/Jerry/John, will either be doing the same thing, or will be throwing stars at you... while doing the same thing. Heh...

Anyways, WHILE SMALL, use the flame, and wait for the Sammer Guy to come to YOU... It'll walk into the flame, and get hurt... Assuming it dies in 1 hit (They ALL did for me, since I had a Small Sammer, Sammer, and Big Sammer Guy card, each. :redd:), you'll revert to normal size, and they'll fall. :karma:

And for the record, for Endgame, I used the same strategy, only I used Luigi. I flipped with Mario, went next to the steps, used Dottie, used Luigi, Grew Back to Normal, and when Endgame approached me, since he couldn't hit me (I was inside the steps... he had no attacks to hit me there. :aiga:), I just Super Jumped through him... Heh...

Heh.

Spoiler: SPM
Didn't you ever go BACK there after beating the game? You can actually do the whole 100 warriors thing! It's one of the game's extra challenges like the pits of 100 trials.

Personally, I didn't find any of them too difficult (Sammer Guys, or Pits of 100 Trials) but I never had such in depth strategies. I just barreled my way through and won. XD

Hey, when you're completing the Flopside Pit for the second time, you gotta do SOMETHING to make it seem worthwhile, so I play some Sumo on my stereo, while talking like an old, wise man, discussing various strategies while randomly stopping to compare my fighting of a Dark Stone Buzzy to rivers and stones and such, and acting like there's someone who is actually LISTENING to me. :gymshoe:

If you go back after the final battle in Count Bleck's Castle, the kingdom is back to normal. This is even made apparant at the end of the game, when it shows all the worlds returning to normal, such as the Land of the Cragnons, etc.

But definitely, the lest memorable/useful party member: Watt. He just didn't shine in particular in my memory - I mean he was just a spark, which weren't memorable at all in the Mario games of old. At least SMRPG had some original characters.

.......He? He....WATT IS A FREAKING SHE!!!!! Why do so many people get her gender wrong?! And what not to like about going straight through defenses? And basically a free Volt shroom to Mario? Watt I believe is the enemy...Dang, I forgot their name but she will probably grow into those evil suns that attack mario, except she wouldn't do that.

And my excuse: I forgot her gender because she is the least memorable. :garyuu:

Hm. I never really found her that useful... Maybe it was just the gender problem that made methink she was so forgetable/ I dunno. I believe I used Bombette for Bowser actually.

And part of what I meant to say is that Watt is the least useful out of fights. Other than her lighting up areas, which isn't really completely neccessary. The second time I played it through (On VC) I actually forgot about her and did the whole Toy Box without her (until I got to the part where you needed her to expose the Shy Guys.)

......Your forgetfullnes of Watt makes me angry as I really liked her. You did remember her insanely important other function did you? The ability to see all hidden blocks? Or did you miss a lot of them?

Sorry...I just loved every single partner and used them all a lot. I get a bit angry at it when people don't use certain partners for some reason...

If you didn't know, Watt is a useful party member because his/hers (the game actually refers to Watt as a boy during the Super Block and a girl in the party menu, I can tell where you got confused) attacks aren't effected by your opponent's defense bonuses. Makes the final Bowser battle a LOT easier when you don't have to spend a ton of FP to take out a decent chunk of his life. Once I got Bowser to 1 HP, and he heals for two turns in a row. I hate that prick.

I used more or less every partner...I had that badge on that let you switch partners instantly without losing a turn hehe all their attacks were mine to use. :karma:
