I don't know a lot about this topic :edgy: so anyone can put their advice too. I just thought it would be nice for the people who draw/write this stuff. So here I go.

1: The main character will never be the most popular (Light, Naruto, nuff said)
2: Try to be original with the abnormalities (Sure there's pretty much only magic, or technology, but make it different in some way)
And 3: The story needs to be simple enough for someone to abridge it.

There, now what can you tell the biggining anime/manga writers of the world?

Here's what you do:

You take Naruto and make everything opposite. Bam, great show. Just don't plan on making any money with it.

Tips to making the perfect CR topic=

1. Make sure after about five months- some asshole will come in and bump the topic from the dead to talk about his ideas only to piss off others. (ex. Anime/Naruto/Death Note)
2. Make sure it has a LOT of sarcastic replies. (ex. this one)
3. We need to constantly be reminded this is internet by mentioning a fad or showing a picture of any fad that has become somewhat popular or even just talking about a diffrent site. (ex. TV Tropes)

I think you won.

...why does everyone act so bitter when anime is mentioned? It's depressing...

1) An interesting concept for anything, whether it be designs for a knife that toasts bread when you cut it or an anime series, can help the audience forgive a lot of initial flaws. (A composition notebook that kills people? Rowing gondolas on Mars?)
2) An author/artist should never, ever go overboard on the authorservice (that's like fanservice, only for...) For every person who wants to hear about your own personal fetishes because of rule 36, there are at least a hundred who don't.
3) Shameless pandering to the fanbase is usually what leads to a degrade in quality in a long-running, popular series.
4) TvTropes is actually a great site for an author: it lists common plot devices and many examples of them gone horribly, horribly wrong. You can learn a lot from it.

Holy crap! Triple Post. The edit button is used for more than shits and giggles.

@NLM's response to Gozu. She's commenting on how your ideas only stem from lower-tier anime/manga that you would find in say 'Shonen Jump'. She then stated popular Anime/Mangas suck and that Seinen-type manga (ex. Hellsing ) is better. If you don't get it with this- try using Google or Wikipedia or something.

1. Think of things you want in an anime.
2. Piece them together in some way.
3. repeat step two until it makes sense.

That's how I work.

To make Naruto better? Reverse Genders, keep the humor and hijinks delete sasuke and sakura

To make Code Geass better? Reverse the roles. Nunnaly is zero and Lulu is restricted to a wheel chair. Karen was Nunnaly's best friend. Suzaku is apart of the rebels, ect.

1. Have an original plot
2. Less hyperactive-cutesy, squeaky-voiced, big-eyed girls with tiny petite bodies with huge bewbs who stand there just for fanservice.
3. Tie in some realism so people can relate to the characters/situation.
5. Less angsty-emo feminine prettyboys.

1) Make sure all the characters have spiky hair (weird colours optional)

2) Have some convoluted plot that leaves the viewers saying "WTF just happened!?" a lot.

I'll start with my two cents:
Don't be like the mainstream BS with inexplicable and even if they are explainable, don't make the method of anything happening so lame, it's got DBZ Syndrome. (see Naruto, One Piece and every new manga out there.)
And for the love of crap. Do NOT make the mistakes of others with a badly written story. Make an original ending if you have to.
Then there's: Cutsey, high-pitched, weaboo-loved characters. You make them and I will personally hunt you down and beat you senseless with the wrath of a volume of Berserk in my hand.
Ahem. Other than that, avoid the mainstream's mistakes of making something so stupid. Might not be popular, but popularity is not worth it if people are going to remember you as a bad writer and a worse artist. Besides. People will remember your manga as an example to follow to the others later.
But I will tell you right now. Artists nowadays are driven by their fans. Whoever's popular will stay alive. Trust me, Kakashi would be DEAD if he wasn't popular.

If that were Bizarro Lucky Star, they'd be ugly, retarded and slow.
Before I forget, I'd also like to state that character development is rather critical. Timing of it is moreso. Why? Naruto screwed itself by mistiming all the angsty character development while TRYING but FAILING to make the characters actually worth reading about. One Piece is a tad less, but still suffers.

It also failed because you know exactly how it'll end from the first time Naruto says "I WANT TO BE HOKAAAGE!" And now he's stronger than like ever hokage ever and he still isn't hokage. What a lamer.

Keeping to a fairly short run (usually thirteen or twenty-six episodes) ensures that you know where you're going with the story and don't inundate the viewers with filler and recap episodes. (Also makes it easier to acquire the entire series on DVD for a reasonable price.)

1. Have a likable main character that doesn't have the same personality as every hero in every [insert genre here] manga EVAR.
2. Try to make a plot that hasn't been done to death before.
3. Side characters matter too.
4. Try to have character interaction - and I'm not just talking about the main character and person x. It gets boring when the main person's the only one that anyone talks to.
5. Never do a Deus Ex Machina unless ABSOLUTLY NECESSARY.
6. Tread carefully if using romance, it can easily kill a plot. Best used sparingly, if at all. Love at first site is a big no-no in anything besides where romance is the plot itself.
7. Try not to make the villains stereotypical either. They're (probably) human too.
8. In action scenes, huge amounts of blood will become boring when used ALL THE FREAKIN' TIME.
9. Make sure it's not boring. <-Most important
