I once bought an Action Replay MAX for PS2 while visiting my sister's new house, but the clerk accidentally gave me the original Action Replay, not the MAX version. I didn't realize this until I came back from my trip, so I couldn't return it.
I don't know if it differs from MAX or not, but the normal Action Replay PS2 has a CD and a Memory Card. The CD runs the software, and the memory card has all the codes installed. Both are required to run the software. Once selecting the codes you want, you eject the disc and put the game disc in while leaving the software running. Don't take out the Memory Card at all during this. You can put in your own memory card once the game has started. And once the CD is in, the screen will verify that the selected cheats are compatible with the game (i.e. it checks if you can use your selected infinite bullets cheat in GTA3, and fails if you have an all weapons cheat for a different game, say, Barbie's Ponyland or whatever).
Whether it's a Memory Card, a CD or both, they'll still probably use that same kind of approach. Hope that helped.
