Hello, it's been a week since I last logged in.

This topic's purpose is to create discussion about game types in general, platforming, FPS, so on and ponder the question:

"What kind of games do we need more?"

Well, here's an example:

In the past week, I started playing Jak 2 Renegade game again from the start. When I had played it for a while, I realized that Jak 2's game mechanic and technique to create good 3d platforming challenge was incredible. For ex. You could attack with a list of different and unique guns or use melee techniques to beat your opponents.

After this I started to think: "Nintendo hasn't released a new Metroid-game for a while. There's already Metroid-platforming and FPS games but, with Jak 2's game mechanic, couldn't they create a great Metroid 3d-platforming game?"

I've been thinking about it for a couple of days now, and I must say that they might succeed to make a even average one if they tried. They wouldn't have to change the controls much.

I'd say every genre has a lot of good (and bad) games made for it, so specifying one genre that "needs more games" isn't really an option. I'd like to see more creative, original thought games, though, such as Portal, World of Goo, Karoshi or Braid. They're always memorable, no matter their actual gameplay quality.

Yes, games with unique genre. Not like:"We need a new Soul Calibur because the last one didn't have Master Chief as playable character."

I agree. The quality of a game has little to do with the genre.

That being said, I'd like to see more games in the style of No More Heroes: A really fun game with an amazing sense of humor.

Also if I could program anything more than Hello World! I'd like to create a game where you're a table; you can collect things around the stage to put on top of yourself, but as you do so you need to be more and more careful that they don't fall off (or you could make the biggest items go underneath, making for a more stable pile) and you wouldn't be able to go through smaller passages with all that on top. However, you'd need an amount to finish the stage.

Or something :3

More "graphical novel"-kind of games, like Phoenix Wright. We've got AA, Hotel Dusk and Professor Layton (although that's more of a real game with its puzzles). I'm sure I'm not very updated and therefore missing out some franchises. But still. More of those! I like how easily they can create their own "feel".

More uniquely structured games. That's what I love about Majora's Mask -it is quite unique. Hope the next Zelda will be equally innovative. Oh, and one specific thing that all games should copy from MM - a living, breathing town. Interesting, optional side stories.

And less of the generic moneymakers. FPS, MMORPGS, RPGS, RTS. I don't like'em :yuusaku:

Games that twist their genre and add interesting concepts. e.g.
Portal, the game that took a genre based on shooting things and turned it into an ingenius puzzle game based on manipulation of time and space.
The World Ends with You, the game that took a genre based on slow turn-based gameplay and made it SUPER FAST TWO SCREENS 7,000,000,000 THINGS GOING ON AT ONCE OH MY GOD. which is good
The Pikmin series, which took a genre based on watching large groups of people attack other large groups of people from the sky and turned it into an adventure in which you yourself play an incredibly active role.
etc. etc. etc.

I've seen some good RTS/FPS hybrids from HL/HL2 mods, but I'd like to see one made as a commercial game with full polish.
(Natural Selection and Empires)
I'm gone for so long, and the colors got all psychedelic! Woohoo!

Give it time. :godot:

We need more classic platformers that are ACTUALLY platformers and without gimmicks tacked on. Also, more space-rail-shooters like Starfox 64.

I want less cliched JRPGs. I'm tired of magic rocks in mythical kingdoms with evil empires.

I want a JRPG set during the American Civil War with the main cast being a Union deserter, an old lost racist confederate guy, a runaway slave for the old guy to be racist to, and a nurse with big boobs. You'd get Abraham Lincoln in your party at some point. He'd be level 50 and he'd know Ultima. Also there'd be magic. The main villains would be Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee because they'd both be co conspiring robots from the future, but you wouldn't find this out until the end of disc 2.

Supported. There's so much history that would fit nicely into the RPG formula. Shame we only see the same old cliches. I don't know if somone has brought this up before, but I will take my chances. Behold The Grand List Of Console Role Playing Game Clichés. A great and witty read!

I would say we need more original adventure games. Seriously, they need to try to make adventure games at least a LITTLE unique. Try bringing Rayman back to his good old platforming days or something...

I'd like to see more fighting games. The only two that were notable that spring to mind for me this year were Soul Calibur 4 and MK vs DC and I didn't enjoy the former very much. :/ Hell, I was that desperate for a fighting game that I was nearly considering taking a dive and buying Def Jam: Icon. I didn't. Thankfully.

I also agree with Tink and I'd love to see more original, creative titles. Mirror's Edge was a unique, interesting concept and while it didn't work as well as I'd hoped, I admire DICE for having the balls to try something different.

Finally, more survival horror plz. With Resident Evil slowly having more of an emphasis on action than horror, I want something that will scare the fucking shit out of me. Siren Blood Curse was a very enjoyable game, I must say, a bargain at 30 euro.
fuck

There are like a zillion coming out within the next year: Street Fighter IV, BlazBlue, King of Fighters XII, Tekken 6, a new Arcana Heart, and Tatsunoko VS Capcom if you're willing to import. Not to mention all of the ones that came out over the past year: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, SoulCalibur IV, MK VS DC, and probably a lot of other stuff I'm missing. There really isn't a lack of fighting games these days.

I'd love to see less casual crap (Animal Crossing, Wii Music, etc) and more core stuff (Metroid, Star Fox and F-Zero).

Oh and more RPG's (especially if they start with the word 'Mother' in the title)

I agree, unless the actual game would suck... Y'know.

You mean like Disgaea?

I'd like to see (yeah, it's my turn :D) more games which would actually have it's story worked more than it's gameplay, though game's points drop quite radically if the gameplay sucks.

Isn't Mario Kart Wii-Mii Channel: the game? You wouldn't be able to tell due to the fact everyone who goes online on that game ALWAYS PLAYS THIER FREAKING MII.

The 3rd person Metroid was a great idea, I had thought of it also.

I think that there needs to be a new Mario game, in the stile of Super Mario Bros. 2. Yes, the Doki Doki one. I don't see why everyone seems to hate this game: I find it as good as, if not better than, Mario 1 and 3.

Also, I think we need a 3d platformer structured like Banjo-Tooie, as opposed to Mario 64. You know, with interconnected levels, not having to select missions, humor, all that good stuff.
