I suggest Dawn of Sorrow if you have a DS and liked Aria of Sorrow. I've liked Portrait of Ruin so far but I liked DoS better.

I think the reason that Legends is non-canon is not because of quality, but because of plot holes. I haven't played Legends or Lament of Innocence, but from what I understand of their stories, both set up their protagonists (Sonia Belmont and Leon Belmont, respectively) as the first of the Belmonts to fight Dracula. Lament of Innocence is the canon version now.
Does anyone know if Circle of the Moon has been re-canonized? I believe it was de-canonized for similar reasons to the N64 games (plot holes relating to the location/keeper of Vampire Killer), but there are some inconsistencies with PoR that just seem irreconcilable. Wouldn't be too upset (though still a bit peeved) if its not, since its story stands well on its own (what little story there is, anyway). Anyway, I digress. I just really liked CotM.

On the subject of CotM's status, this game was one of four CV games to have been removed from the series' storyline. The other three included:
-Castlevania Legends
-Castlevania 64
-Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
However, with the release of PoR, every CV game EXCEPT Legends has been re-canonized.

I wasn't saying that they made the right decision in de-canonizing Legends, just offering a possible explanation. Legends makes it quite clear that the legend of the Belmonts began with Sonia. Even if Leon didn't fight Dracula himself, the legend of the Belmonts would have begun with him.
I do think that this is a poor reason to de-canonize a game, though. I was just offering my theory as to why they did it, not suggesting that they were justified in their decision. For the most part, I agree with you. They can't just go erasing storylines left and right to suit their fancy, and the discrepancy between Legends and LoI is, as you described, completely inconsequential. I think the "We can't have a female Belmont!" explanation is a pretty abysmal reason to remove a game from canon, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's why they haven't reinstated Legends. After all, in all recent games, the female protagonists (when playable) are always magic users, so I wouldn't discount the possibility of that being the reason.

You know, the objections and presenting evidence, and so on.

This is how I interpreted it:
While we may not know why Legends is no longer canon or how long it will be until it is reinstated into the timeline (seriously, I never thought they would go back and re-canonize the games they've already removed from the timeline), there are a number of plotholes between both games that may have contributed to its current status.
Your last sentence was what prompted me to write my previous post.
To put it simply, there are no contradictions to Legends and the overall Castlevania story. Putting Legends back into the timeline will not hinder anything that hasn't already been set in motion.
Spoiler: Reasons:
All in all, there doesn't appear to be any real plotholes. The possible romantic relationship between Alucard and Sonia is debatable at best (trust me, I know a few who still run with this one), but it's highly doubtful.
If anything, it's more of a Touga/Utena relationship (from Revolutionary Girl Utena). Alucard shows genuine concern for Sonia's well-being, and would do all in his power to keep her from harm. A true chivalrous gentleman, indeed.
The game itself, to be honest, was poorly made and should be redone completely. However, the story is pretty good. The game itself shouldn't be the reason why the story should not exist.
Yeah, I'm a little peeved that Legends hasn't been re-canonized. I mean, how often do you hear of a story that is removed AND reinserted by the same group, and by the same man responsible for removing them in the first place?
The game's coverart is shown in the PoR pre-order artbook, but the story is excluded from the timeline found in the same book.
I'm a fan of Legends, and much like your appreciation for Konami's decision to re-canonize CotM (which was a really cool game for being the Big K's first CV game for the GBA), I wait for their decision to recanonize one of my favorite CV games.
Heck, with Dracula X finally reaching a broader audience in a few months, this is all I have left to wait for!

I understood this to mean that you thought that Legends, which was a poor game, should be reinstated since the N64 games, which were also poor, were reinstated.
You then took my post to mean that Legends and LoI covered the same story with different protagonists (which is not the case) and explained the "error" in my assessment.
So it appears that we both misunderstood each other, but we were in complete agreement the whole time! Bottom line: There's a minor storytelling inconsistency that is trivial at best and makes no difference whatsoever plotline-wise (hell, there's worse plot holes in the series canon). Legends should be re-canonized and/or remade.

Castlevania 3 states that Dracula first attacked humanity in 1476, and Trevor was the first Belmont to fight him. Legends, however, moves this back twenty years and says that Sonia was the first. But why? Symphony says that the only reason Dracula attacked is because his wife was killed- but yet here he is, randomly attacking. Sonia even tells Dracula he lost his ability to love!
So yeah, SEVERLY mucks up the timeline. It's easier to simply remove it than to make new games to explain the incosistencies, or for IGA to say "the events in this game? yeah they were different.".
ANYWAYS, on topic...
I've beaten Harmony, Aria, Dawn and Portrait. I've played a lot of Symphony and I love that the most. I've also played a bit of the first, third and Bloodlines but got my ass kicked, heh.

Hmm...interesting!
I wasn't completely aware of Trevor being the first Belmont to fulfill the oath made in LoI.
There's just one thing that doesn't sit too well w/ me:
In SotN (the ENG version, at least), this incarnation of Dracula seems to be more at peace after being killed by his own son. If this was the case, if he came to terms and accepted Lisa's last words, why would he continue to threaten humanity? Surely, he wasn't bound by any infinite law (unlike Death). Even in his absence, there would be another "dark lord" to take his place.
I could try to go deeper into this, but all joking aside (yes, the above was partly a joke...sort of), Castlevania is full of a number of descrepancies.
Chalk it up to the "ancient texts";P. If they were "translated" correctly, we would get a more accurate picture of the CV storyline.
Outside of the majority of CV games that I've played, I kept track of the other games through the CVDungeon's timeline, which made the effort to chronicle almost every CV game in the series.
I still wish they'd include this "Forgotten Belmont". A re-write wouldn't kill anyone, will it?
Thanks for clearing that up, though. It makes much more sense now.

I too would like to see Sonia return- but not in a remake of Legends. It took the Belmonts three hundred years to finally slay Dracula- surely they must have been killing other vampires and demons too. A future game with Sonia could have her against another powerful vampire, sort of like how Portrait initially started.

Actually, Sonia was supposed to be featured in a cancelled Dreamcast game called, "Castlevania Ressurrection", if I'm not mistaken. Oh, well. With the semi-success of the recent 3D CV titles, I think they've worked out most of the kinks.

I think I played the first ever Castlevania once... But that was a long time ago, and I never got past the halfway mark....
