The worst is Pelican, which has been known to ruin a countless amount of video game consoles with their defective and poorly designed products. For example, their Nintendo DS and PSP screen protectors actually have a glue like adhesive on them. It's like putting a sticker on top of your screen. Their GameCube and Xbox 360 wireless controller rechargers cause fires.

Personally, I've no issue with using 3rd party accessories. Money's always a problem on my end and if I can get a PS2 controller for 15 euro instead of 30+, I'd hop on in without a second thought. Only problem I've had with the controllers I'd bought was their clunkyness but that was minor.

It's not that all 3rd parties are bad, you just have to find the right one companies to buy from. Nyko happens to be my favorite off all the 3rd party companies, I've been using stuff made by them since I was Kid (Gameboy Worm light for example) and very rarely have I ever had any problem. In fact, I'm using a Wiimote Rechargeable Battery now and I love it. It's saved tons of money on batteries and is the one of best 10 dollars I spent on the Wii so far.
Also MadKatz is another great company for 3rd party stuff. I had a wireless Gamecube controller it worked great for over a year. Then I dropped the adaptor for the remote while packing and it broke after bouncing off 3 walls. I contacted them and I had a new adaptor, free of charge.
Just don't go 3rd party for Memory cards. I've lost 2+ years worth of gameplay because my memory card decided to corrupt itself after not using for 2 months. Thankfully, I had it backup on another card.

That's a common example of the 3rd parties. Some of them are good but the rest are shit.

EDIT: Oh, and Madcatz is not worth SHIT in terms of some products I remember my girlfriend talking about - they break for absolutely no reason after a few months, and she never abused them or anything. Controllers, mostly.
I had a Turbo pad fizzle out on me once, but I know what happened. >.>; Having little brothers will make this stuff happen. (This is why I keep my Xbox 360 in a room where they're NEVER allowed in.)

After the controller for my PS1 acted up, i tried 3rdP ones from NAKI, which didn't last long. I wound up getting a Mad Catz one with the dual analog sticks a couple years ago, and it's worked great.
