So, I've had my DS (the original kind) for a few years now and it seems as though the battery life on a charge is getting shorter and shorter. My DS has been through a lot, a few drops and falls and stuff, it's scratched up but it still works like a charm. "Old reliable" if you will, but it's what I've come to expect from nintendo handhelds. Anyway, I was considering trading it in at Gamestop (inb4ripoff) to get a discount for a DS Lite because I heard the Lite gets more play time per charge from its battery and whatnot. The one thing that makes me a little hesitant to get a Lite is that I hear people have problems with the buttons not working, notably the shoulder buttons. Is that a very common problem, i.e. common enough for you to advise against getting a Lite? I'd rather have a shorter battery life than non-functioning buttons.

No, the buttons rarely don't work. My Lite has been fully functionable for......well, ever! You've got to make sure you don't drop it though.............OR spin around on a swivel chair while the headphones are plugged in to your Lite, which is on the desk...! Overall, It would be a good idea to get a Lite.

It's really your call. I've used the same original DS for years and it still works perfectly. I've played the Lite on several occasions and my personal preference is the original.

The benefits and faults of both;

Classic DS Phat
- Far superior control pad.
- More durable design.
-

- Thin, uncomfortable stylus.
- Power button instead of switch, easily confused with Start button.
- Dim screen, hard to see outside.
- Flimsy L and R buttons which ware easily.
- Bulky design.

DS Lite
- Superior cosmetic and smaller design.
- More durable L and R buttons.
- Different brightness settings, visible outside.
- Larger, more comfortable stylus in a better place.
- Hold power switch.

- GBA games and Slot 2 accessories stick out awkwardly.
- Control pad is absolutely awful, difficult to use diagonals.
- After the first wave of DSlites, Nintendo started using gradually poorer and poorer quality touch screens, most with yellow tints and severe ghosting.
- Easily breakable hinge.
- Many DSlites are poorly assembled/not assembled with enough material, causing for loose screens and buttons.

If you manage to get a DSlite without any manufacturing issues (and there are LOADS), then I'd suggest the DSlite over the original DS, though the control pad is going to suck no matter how well your DSlite is made.

Whoah, i guess i got one of the crap touch screens. I could scribble like mad on my phat one, and almost no scratches, on my DSlite, not so much.

I think you should keep you phat DS and buy a DSlite. Then you can test out Download Play. Or if a friend comes over, Multiplayer.

I haven't had any problems with my Lite(s) at all, other than the screen.
My old DS screen withstood being stabbed with ballpoint pens multiple times (and actually playing games with one).
My other DS Lite withstood maybe a couple of months using its actual STYLUS.
It probably has more to do with the kind of games I play but, really, the screen is generally nasty.
Or maybe I just got stuck with a couple of bad ones.

when I had a DS lite (before I traded it for my DS Classic), I noticed that when pressure was applied to the area above the power switch (like pressing the A button for instance), the power would shut off on me.

My DS' shoulder buttons gave out after three years, so my girlfriend gave me a DS Lite almost a year ago for my birthday. It's never had any problems, and I love it to death. XD

I do agree the control pad isn't as good as the DS's, but I will say this: I'm used to it. I really have no problems, even any problems with diagonals (I play the Megaman Battle Network games regularly, and diagonal movement is required for quick gameplay), so I really recommend the DS Lite.

My husband bought me a Japanese DS Lite a couple of years ago for my birthday, and it hasn't failed me yet. ^_^ The brighter screen is really worth it, you can significantly tell the difference. I haven't had any problems with the screen getting scratched or button issues or anything like that. But, I don't play the hell out of it like some people do. ^_^;;

Anyway, I think that you should upgrade for sure. Or if anything, just maybe buy a DS Lite and keep your old DS as a backup.

ON TOPIC: My DS Lite is all fine, but... my GBA slot no longer finds an inserted GBA game...
I have never had my hinge cracked... EVER,
and... to tell you all the truth... I never owned a original DS... My DS Lite is my first DS,
YAY FOR MY WHITE LITE!

But... I sugest just getting a new (official nintendo) battery for your old DS, unless if it has some problem with reading games, or it has trouble with the touch screen, or it has a hinge crack, or some other really bad problem,
But it seems your DS is running great by what you said...
and scratches are just a sign you really love your DS that you play it alot,
just like my DS Lite has a yellow affect on the L and R buttons.

In my opinion, I would not get rid of my DS Lite to gamestop if I were to buy a new version like DSi... I would keep my DS Lite and have a DSi. :P

Actually, I've only used Lite DSes, but since a friend of mine owns a Phat (I never really wanted to use it :P), I can tell it's more easily broken. That's it.

So, if you'll get a Lite, and I reccomend it, take care of it, will ya?

If you want be cheap, you could buy a replacement battery for a your DS Phat. It's about $15 to $20 depending on where you shop.

I do recommend getting a DS lite but if your DS Phat is still works, I wouldn't trade it to Gamestop. Keep using it with a replacement battery OR Keep it as an back-up.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but gameStop generally only accepts mint condition things (or things that appear to be, but they didn't test {PS2 controllers anyone?!}). You may get lucky, and have it accepted, but I would do one of to things
1. Wait for pre orders for the dsI to come out
2. Replace the battery. I did it several times, and it works fine

First off, I do appreciate so many people coming and giving their advice. Thanks, guys :)

I decided to stick with my original DS and not trade it in, and also not buy a Lite. Probably because of my decision that my DS still has a satisfactory battery life, and of course I've got the AC adapter if I want to play when I'm low on battery. My DS has proven that it is still quite efficient at charging through the AC adapter, even while I play. But essentially, I think that in my mind I exaggerated the "problem" of a lesser battery life. It is not so short a life as I originally thought, and it is not so big a deal. And since the unit still works fine otherwise, it'd be, well, a little foolish (hehe) to trade it in, I believe.

Also, LOL at that photo of the white DS Lite. Talk about a sore shoulder! :gant:

:holdit:

Since finding an old DS is out of the question (one game place said they rarely get them in, even the lite's) i guess going straight to a new lite would be the best thing for a first time purchase right?

Actually, it is a company policy that GameStop will let you trade in games and systems as deffective with a refurbishment fee. However, not all GameStops like to accept products in this conditions because they don't want to deal with making them sellable again.

If it is something cannot attempt to fix, they won't take it at all. Also, if the refurbishment fee is more than the trade-in value they will not accept it either. In this case you would actually owe GameStop money to take your game off of off your hands.

How are you privy to all of this knowledge you ask yourself? My husband is an assistant manager for the company and has to deal with this kind of issue all the time.

Back on topic: George, keep in mind that the longer you wait to trade in your DS, the less it will be worth over time. Eventually you will not be able to trade it in at all, but I believe this time is still far away because the DSi doesn't even have a release date yet as far as I know.

Yeah, I hear that. I decided I don't want to trade it in anymore. If worst comes to worst I'll just get a new battery, but I'm happy with it as it is, I decided.

As for refurbishment, my DS is pretty much in mint condition, I mean, the only signs of wear and tear are scuff marks on the unit's outer shell (i.e. the part that PhoenixFire showed in his photo). There are a few scratch marks on the screens but I think that I could probably clean those off with a wet paper towel. I haven't cleaned the screens in a while, but I do take care not to abuse my stuff.

Yes, quite. At this point I'm wondering how I even got the notion to trade it in in the first place >_> It's really a fine unit.

Wow... i hate my gamestop then, my ds had one scratch on it and I was told that "it was not in satisfactory condition to be traded in to our store." (Lucky i can buy ds's at school for dirt cheap, and trade those in ;) ). I hate the Ds lite though, my third...THIRD ds lite's hinge cracked yesterday (ALL THREE OF THE **** THINGS' HINGES HAVE CRACKED!!!!) It's beginning to annoy me. And dumb little me just keeps on earning the money to replace them. And nintendo was helpful with their 69.99 dollar charge to fix it. Is it safe to buy the silver or the Dialga/Palkia ones? Since they're newer? Or should I wait for the Dsi to come out? A little help plz!

Have you tried other GameStops in your area? We have a lot in our area, in fact, we have two right across the street from one another (one used to be an EB games). What part of your system was scratched? The screen or the body?

My husband has some tips for you: If you go to another GameStop please let them know how unhelpful the other GameStop was. They will be more helpful if they know this. Try trading in at Game Crazy if they are in your area. According to him, and he knows because he used to work there, they are a dirty company and will take anything. Also, and I guess this could go with either company, ask if they will take it with the refurbishment fee. If you act like you know something about their policies, they will be trown off guard and will help you because they don't want to look bad. They might not be very nice to you, which is unfortunate, but you will get what you want for the most part. If all else fails, ask the speak to the District Manager (ask for the office number or for him to be called immediately). If you get a hold of the DM then he would be more willing to help you then have a customer raising hell.

My husband also says that the Crimson/Black and the Colbalt/Black are more durable than the others because the material used for the the bottom is tougher than the shiny plastic of the other versions.

Thats strange...
are they used?
Because they might be the older late 2006 lites'.

My 2007 DS lite has a perfect hinge,
maybe it depends on colors for quality...
is yours white? mine is.

As an answer to the first question, the scratch was on the top of the top hinge (Where the silver nintendo logo was) and, as for GameStop locations, I have two in my area, but one is a fairly far drive from where I live (Like a half hour). I guess I should have tried the other one though...
And for the second question, here's my DS Lite History:
The Polar White one
The Onix Black One
The Crimson Red one

I bought a case off eBay, but I cannot use it because:
I cannot open the DS up because of that screwdriver
I fear for opening it up in fear that I will destroy it (It looks delicate when I look at the procedure online)

That's probably because you don't have any siblings. The total number of Lites our family owns is around 4. The first worked perfectly, but then something went wrong with the top screen. We fiddled with the hinge, but we accidentally broke off the screen. Then my brother got two Lites for his b-day. Then, when we were in the mall, he accidentally dropped one, and the bottom screen wouldn't work. Afterwards, we got another Lite for Christmas, but I'm being more cautious from now on.

get the lite, but also get a protective case. you'll thank me later.

I never needed a protective case. ;D Had mine for over a year, never dropped, no scratches or anything. Still in mint condition.
