Title: Ghostly Turnabout
Author: killing dahlia
Rating: fanfiction rating k+/T
Genre: general
Status: incomplete
Pairing: suggested phoenix/iris, and possibly very minor edgeworth/oc
Summary: Maya and Pearl have dragged Phoenix to have a session with a psychic, and well, some things are better left in graves.

A note to all possible readers, this does contain some spoilers for GS3, all cases I think. And please, constructive criticism is wanted because I'm only 14, to some people's surprise.

Spoiler: Chapter One
February 14, 9:03am
Wright and Co. Law Offices

“Come on Nick!”

I groaned in protest. Maya was busily tugging at my sleeve; Impatient as always. Today, Maya and Pearls have forced me to pay for some time with a psychic. Maya is smitten with techniques to talk with the dead, and forced me to pay a lot for this session. As I pulled myself away from Maya, Pearl was standing there beaming at me, “Mr Nick!” she exclaimed happily. “Are we almost ready?”

I nodded weakly, “Y-yeah.” I just about managed; Maya was still holding on to me, in fact, I thought she was going to leave a few bruises. When she let go to talk with Pearl, I sighed and grabbed my cell phone quickly. “We’re ready now,” I said.

February 14, 9:15am
Gatewater Hotel
Room 320

I knocked powerfully on the door, and I heard a voice saying “One minute!” Pearl and Maya looked at each other for high hopes, I didn’t even know what I had gotten myself into truth be told. Suddenly, the door opened and I put on a smile, just as Maya and Pearl did.

I was expecting an old woman, but there was a young woman at the door, “Hello.” She said cheerfully. And I wasn’t expecting such modern clothes, or a modern woman. She has a fringe to one side, and long brown hair in a ponytail. She was wearing a dark blue, almost black suit. She also wore a prominent large necklace with a Ming Mang symbol on it? Or was it ying yang? I never understood things like that.

“H-hello!” Maya said nervously, but still with a smile.

“Mr. Nick! H-how could you do this to Maya?!” Pearl said huffily, and the next thing I felt was a slap.

The woman laughed and I braced my cheek in pain.

Pearl luckily drifted her attention to the woman, “Hello Ms Puranorm!” she said cheerfully.

“Hey Pearl, Maya and uh… who’s this?” she said looking at me.

“… Wright, Phoenix Wright,” I said.

She smiled again, “Great! You can all come in. Did you want a drink or something?” she asked again.

“We’re fine thanks,” I said on behalf of us all. “Sorry, I didn’t catch your first name…” I said again.

She paused for a second, and she looked almost a bit curious, or angry. Soon enough that was gone and replaced with happiness, “Marissa,” She said sweetly.

As we entered, she closed the door behind us and gestured for us all to sit at a circular table with four chairs around it. I couldn’t help but to notice a valentine’s card by her bed. Was it that time of the year already? I sighed.

“Before I go ahead with this process, I want to know who you are wishing to talk to…”

Talking to? By a phone?

Maya looked at Pearl, “My mother, Misty Fey,” She then sighed heavily.

“Maya?” I whispered.

She looked at me, “Yes?”

“Why didn’t you just channel her?”

Maya sighed again, “You can’t channel a past master, otherwise Mystic Ami would still be alive, being channeled by someone else,”

Ah. I felt dumb now. Marissa nodded at Maya and looked at the big A4 pad in front of her. She picked up a pencil and looked at Pearl too, “I am about to do a process called automatic writing, do you know what that is?”

Maya and Pearl shook their heads, I was completely lost.

“It is where the right side of your brain is taken over by a spirit, and they write,” She stated simply. “I will ask that Maya who is sitting next to my right puts her hand over my writing one, so she can feel if I am writing from myself, or from a spirit.”

Maya nodded, and did she she was told, "Good," Marissa said again, "Now I shall begin, with a question. Misty Fey, do you wish to be contacted?" Strangely she used her free hand to bold her right nostril and breathed deeply a few times. She closed her eyes, and her right hand began to move across the paper, gliding with no effort.

"W-wow," Pearls whispered in awe.

Marissa's hand stopped and Maya removed hers. We all had a look at the paper. As clear as day, it read;

I do indeed.

“Eeekkk!” Maya said.

“Wh-whoa,” I just about managed.

“So she wants to talk… very well,” Marissa said before sighing. She closed her eyes, “I will attempt to make contact with her…”

She placed both hands together; clasping them.

An eerie silence filled the room as we waited for her to give us a sign… until suddenly, it all went from calm to chaos.

“I-I can…t!” she stuttered, her eyebrows twitching and her hand slowly moving up to her head. They gripped her head tightly as if she was trying to console herself, “P-please…! Get… out of my… head…”

Her breathing got deeper and I stood up, “Ms Puranorm?” I asked her.

“Ghosts… there is so much, darkness…” she stuttered.

Suddenly, Maya put her arm around her, and Pearl did too, “A-are you alright?” Pearl said.

She stopped it all and her arms fell to the table again. The shaken Marissa looked at me. “It was interrupted. There are ghosts which want to prevent it…” she sighed. “Mr Wright?” she asked me.

“Hmm?” I said, barely anything really.

“There is someone who wanted to talk to you. She… I wouldn’t let her.”

I stood there, shocked. “W-who?”

“Her name is… Dahlia.”

“…”

Not her, anyone but her.

“M-mother…” Maya said, looking as if she was in tears.

Marissa looked at her, “Maya, Misty is fine. But Dahlia wanted to talk to you both, and had some sort of power over the reading.”

She sniffed a reply.

I looked at Marissa too, she was shaken, badly. The happiness had disappeared from her. Suddenly a ringtone floated around the room, “Excuse me… for a minute.” She said and left for the bathroom.

Maya and Pearl looked at each other, “Mr Nick, is she alright?” Pearls asked nervously.

I nodded vaguely. I had the suspicion that she was a fake, but something didn’t match for me. “I’m going to take a little look around the room,” I said and did so. I had a brief look on surfaces, but the only drawer I looked in was by her bedside table. Empty.

I noticed the valentine’s card, who would have given her that card anyway? I peered inside;

Marissa,
Thanks for your help in that case. It means a lot to me.
M.

Case? Was she a lawyer? She then came out of the bathroom with her phone in her hand, and I shuffled back to the table.
“I’m sorry, but I’ve got a case.”

I raised an eyebrow, “A case?” another case? What did this mean?

She sighed, “O-oh. Nothing. I’ve got another reading… that’s all,” She looked away and picked up a coat, “I’ll refund this reading, and I’ll arrange a safer one for next time…”

That was hasty. And Just as I expected, I noticed a psyche lock, or two.

“I’m sorry, but I’ll have to ask you to leave, because I too are going,” she paused, and put on a sweet smile, “Mr Wright, the ghosts of someone’s past never fade. T-there are too many, in yours and mine,” She paused, “Be careful.”

We left abruptly, but I had a feeling we would meet, not for a reading, but in court.

This sounds promising! I really like the idea of this story and am eager to see more!
The idea that a spirit medium can't conjure past masters is also interesting; I'm not sure if we'll know canonically if that's true, but it seems to make sense for this story.

So far, the only real grammatical problem with this story is with a certain aspect of dialogue. You write your dialogue like this:

“Marissa.” She said sweetly.

It should look like this:

"Marissa," she said sweetly.

Anytime you have a piece of dialogue that normally ends with a period, you use a comma.
So, "My name is Phoenix Wright." I said aloud would be changed to "My name is Phoenix Wright," I said aloud

That's all :edgy:
