Excel Saga is the ultimate anime parody, for those unfamiliar with it. 26 episodes of pure randomness, dating sim ripoffs, wanton destruction, and (my absolute favorite part of the series) Pedro. Discuss it here!

"Where are you taking Pedro when he is still encased in flan pudding?"

I'd rather (man I am a broken record) discuss the manga, which is infinetely funnier and parodies everything from anime to Japanese culture and global matters. There's no Pedro, though.

Actually they're kind of different 'series' to me, so I like them both. I prefer the satire and dark wit of the manga, and Excel comes off as a much more 'sane' (extremely paranoid) character, and she fills more of an 'everywoman' role as the lead. I find it funny that Hyatt is considered to have a really bizarre drug habit in the manga (which was taken out) and her extreme doses of medication keep her relatively "alive." Also exciting is that later in the series, a third main character is added, Elgala. (Well aside from the other characters, anyway.) There is also a plot, which helps. Plot is good.

If you haven't read it, you should give it a try. The series is a little more 'high brow' than the anime, but still just as really off the wall at times. Viz has 15 volumes out now, and they do a really good job with it.

A friend of mine used to love this! Needless to say, I saw some of the episodes of it any time I went round her house...xP I still have the opening tune on my computer as well...TONZURA KOITE! <333

I, in particular, remember loving the Poochus...! X3 Especially one episode where one screamed "Divine Retribution!" at a kid and a rock fell on his head...xD

A friend of mine recommended this to me the other day (two years ago rather) and I watched it. I bought the entire set, including the supposed sequel, Puni Puni Poemy, which is even much weirder than Excel Saga.

I used to listen to the theme song a lot. I didn't get bothered at all with the coughing. The final opening just had blood all over the place too. I remember the part where Excel was talking like Sailor Moon, and I remembered that it was the same voice actress. She talks so fast! I have a giant red poster that I got from a convention that says, "Excel Saga is Yummy" and Excel is biting on the DVD's.

Excel Saga/puny puny poemi are the animes that made be despise anime. That last episode was so disgusting, perverted, illegal, and wrong that I hated anime forever. And Puny Puny Poemi was also wrong. I have no idea how this shit got in the US. Its anime/loli illegal shit.

The final episode of Excel Saga was specifically designed so that Japanese television would refuse to air it. Presumably the same was done with Poemi (which I didn't particularly like, as it happens).

If Excel Saga is the reason you don't like anime, then maybe you should look for something a little more serious, like Cowboy Bebop or Trigun.

Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemy are in no way representations of the entire anime syndicate. Lana You might as well say "South Park is the reason I hate cartoons from the US and Canada! It's so filthy and horrible!"

And.. why did you sit through the entire Excel Saga series and Puni Puni Poemy if you despise anime?

I think the manga is much more serious than the anime.
My favorite episode was no. 17 ("Animation USA"). The Sailormoon sequence is freakin' sweet, and much more amazing when you realize that the JPN VA for Excel was also the VA for the SM anime!
Now, that's golden!
This particular episode was funny subbed, but down-right hillarious dubbed!
Excel's attempt to make friends with the locals is a perfect example of this.

No, Excel Saga/Puni Puni Poemy is not for everybody. That freakin' thing had disclaimers written all over it. Heck, even the episodes had "disclaimers"! For someone who may be offended by it, why they would continue to watch even after reading the warning labels is beyond me.

Excel Saga shouldn't be too hard to find. It's been out for 5+ years, and they've just released a thin box version a while back. Good luck finding Puni Puni Poemy, though.

Excel Saga is definitely one of my favorite anime series. I haven't seen it in years and I still adore it XD
It's so friggin hilarious! Pedro and Nabeshin are the best.

"Pedro's tears are flowing like waterfalls!"

"I'm Nabeshin!"

The first episode and the episode with Key have to be my favorites.

"My name is Key. I am a Key. Would you like to become...my keyhole?"

Shinichi Watanabe is amazing <3

I would watch it if only for the extreme insanity factor but I probably wouldn't understand more than half the parodies due to them being from animes that I've never watched or even heard of.

Amazingly when I watched it a few years ago I understood a good number of parodies, and my video store had the first dvd so I watched it again, but dubbed.

I'll go read the manga soon

Fortunately, the Excel Saga DVDs come with AD-Vid Notes (don't know if the thin box DVDs have this). With these, footnotes appear throughtout the episode with the references used during that very scene, as well as a little Japanese cultural notes.
And they say anime isn't educational.....:P.

Haha, I love Excel Saga. I've only ever seen the anime, though if I get any money at all any time soon I might buy the full manga set from ebay or something. Heh, I'm up to episode 13 in the anime and it just makes me laugh. I love the puchus and poor, tragic Pedro. The dub voices are good as well, Excel's done very well and she talks so loud and goddamn fast. I'm not really bothered by the obscene things really, considering I watch South Park religiously and enjoy a bit Drawn Together as well, which makes most of my friends, even the one obsessed with the Saw movies, squirm and get in a bit out of their depth.
