Win a major video game tournament at a regional or nationwide level, and then perhaps people will take you a bit more seriously.

There are a bunch of girls who claim to be good at games, but only maybe a handful of them are actually any good, and half of THAT handful actually play competitively.

Want to make guys not think girls suck at games? Represent yourselves. Bitching and protesting alone won't work.

The problem is tht there are no tournements for me to enter at all where I live.
Also it depends on the person. I know a ton of boys who claim there good at games and maybe a handful of them are actually any good.
And also for me it was just decided that based on what I like and what I do that I am bad at games. Just because I am one of those people who love cuddly animals, shopping, drawing etc. doesn't mean that I'm bad at games. And I'm not protesting at all. I was just asking why on earth people think, without asking me any questions, not playing a single game against me - I'm bad at games. Is it beccause that's just the way girl's have been strereo typed; bad at games.

Yeah it's a shame some blokes need to get their arse kicked before they take you seriously.

It's funny though when you beat someone and they pretend that they "let you win" and demand a re-match.

It's after about the 5th time that they FINALLY accept you're just better at that particular game :redd:

And me ^_^
But for me someimes especially at racing games, no matter how many times I beat him apparently racing games have nothing to do with and that there just "luck" The proble is that some boys can't admit to being beaten by a girl. :yuusaku:

There are people who live in the middle of nowhere and yet travel far distances to be able to prove themselves. In the Street Fighter scene, there is a player named Hsien Chang who back in the day was a relative nobody. He was from Texas, and the top players were almost all in California. He traveled to Cali to play in their tournaments, and ended up beasting like crazy. Now Texas is recognized for having a strong SF scene because of him playing there.

Right. We've covered this.

Well, just prove them wrong. This isn't like getting hit by a fire hose because you're different. They're just sassing you in something you can obviously do something to shut them up.

Quote:

Again, this is the "playing victim" bit we've all seen and have gotten tired of. Pardon me for referencing fighting games a lot, but there's a lot of things I can mention from it that applies to other games in a competitive sense.

Two of the most well-known Street Fighter players in the US are Ricky Ortiz and Amir Amirsaleh. The thing is, they're both gay, and yet are two of the most respected fighting game players in the US. Why? Because they're both dedicated and insanely good players. When you mention those two, the whole thing about their preferences don't even pop up in conversations.

Yes yes, a cat is a cat.

A lot of guys will make excuses for getting beat, and it'd be no different if you were a boy either. Some guys are dumb like that.

Like I and others have said, just enjoy the games. Don't try to put some agenda behind it. Who cares what some people think? And if you ARE so butt-hurt by them, then step it up. Just utterly destroy them, and whatever excuses they have won't take away from the fact that you beat them.

There are girls who are accurate FPSes, as seen in WCG. Got that, everyone?

THAT'S RIGHT, I AM A WOMAN. Some people still can't figure it out. :yuusaku:

Anyway, the problem with using tournaments as a standard for judging men vs women in the gaming world is that most games that get tournaments are male-oriented games to begin with. Fighting games, FPS - not that girls don't play them, but they're definitely created by and for guys, so it's not really a surprise that guys outnumber girls on the competative circuit. (Though I did meet a girl from Play Magazine who played SF competatively - she was beating most of the guys around and even some Capcom employees) Most games aimed towards women aren't ones you can play competatively (like RPGs and such).

I play a lot of DMC and MGS, but even if I played through MGS4 perfectly and got myself a Big Boss emblem (lol ok not happening) that doesn't mean I would get recognition for it.

But now that gaming is becomming a lot more mainstream I'm sure we'll start to see more female gamers popping up.

Games are not always made by man to man.
Even if it is the only game I know:

Assassin`s Creed, and the main producer was Jade Raymond. I can`t find a better example sorry.

Croik: It`s great you like MGS. And that`s true wether someone achieves something in a game it doesn`t mean he/she is going to get recognition for it.
Thanks. It was, is and always will be a pleasure.

I remember getting the Big Boss emblem... damn, that was hard. Especially the parts that originally weren't hard, like the chase in Act 3, and then there was the oh-so frustrating sniper battle with Crying Wolf in the middle of a snowstorm. Worst was probably the Liquid fight, when he could pretty much kill you with a single punch as long as he preceded it with the phrase "Take this!" But I sure was proud of that small little emblem that appeared on my finish screen.

Also, to get back to your actual point, most of the games I enjoy are of the single-player variety. Really, gaming has little to do with whether it is competitive or not, because only certain games even involve competition. If were talking about gaming as in "the act of engaging in interactive entertainment," let's look at it as a medium for information, like a book or the cinema, rather than as a sport.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a hardcore gamer. I don't play anything that's really competitive and I don't 100% on everything. I'm not ashamed to load up the Action Replay and cheat every now and then, and I mostly enjoy RPGs and visual novels like AA. "Hardcore gamer" always makes me think of FPS games xD

My face is just a bit mannish and I slouch a lot, though, so people often assume I'm a lesbian ;_;

Not to fight the flow of things, but I think I'll make an on-topic comment.

Call me crazy.

Now, if they sterotypical girl gamer is one who plays casual, occasionally crappy games and plays them infrequently...

Well, then I mat just be a girl gamer.

I bit of a blow, considering that I'm a male.

What I don't understand is: Has geek culture dissolved to a point where we can't even welcome in our fellow man woman?

Have we become the elitist snobs that we have preconditioned ourselves the despise?

If so, I weep for Geek Culture.

What I do for our 'geek culture' is avenge it for the sake of the fact that:
One, female gamers are underestimated.
Two: Most female opponents are all at least good. And even if they're not, I don't care.
Three: Some of the competition relies solely on the fact that psychological intimidation to lessen the competition. They're normally the ones who bother me a lot.
All I ask is that as a guy for the females to quit complaining. Tons of chicks are gamers. And some of them are pretty damn good. (I used to play against this one chick at Little Tokyo in KoF 2002. She isn't half bad.)

When has accepting others a part of Geek Culture? I must have missed the fucking memo after all the fandom wars (dating back from 1970-1980 and still going strong!), all the insults slung at those who do not comprehend so called geek culture, the hidden racist, sexist and homophobic tones of certain parts of geek culture (online gaming mostly, but when was the last time you heard about a black guy/gal playing D&D, and even then I'm stretching because D&D is the most popular (albeit not the best) Pen and Paper system, so there's a good chance everyone will know at least one), etc.

Oh Hatman, you speak so much truth that it makes me sad.

The unfortunate truth is that a lot of "geeks" are just as bad when it comes to acceptance as the "popular" kids they were rejected by back in school. They just discriminate over different things.

As a general rule, I don't like FPS', because I don't really see the point in them. Go around. Shoot anything that moves. Don't get killed. I really like RTS' and simulations (never said I was good at them, just that I like them) and I really enjoy games like Fable. Don't get me wrong, though, I do enjoy some of the more 'casual' games out there. I'm not hugely competitive, but I can be when I want to be. I'm also usually a lone gamer, but that doesn't mean that I'm not up for a nice long round of Rock Band. I'm just one of the guys, really, and played a little Left 4 Dead, but didn't enjoy it that much.

I'm fortunate in the fact that I don't really have to live it, but I honestly blame this on under-representation of "minorities" within geek culture and geek media. It also doesn't help that mass media completely misses the boat on many aspects of geek culture.

Hmmm... I really don't get it! :payne:

I've been playing video games since I was about 3. It's the product of having two brothers I guess!

I don't get this 'girl gamer' demographic that is circulating... I like as many of the games for 'guys' as anyone else!

In fact, my favourite games of all time are games like Goldeneye, Streets of Rage II, Resident Evil 2, etc.

Me and my little brother are currently trying to get past level 20 on Nazi Zombie mode on Call of Duty : World at War before we lose around 40 hours of our lives to Resident Evil 5 and Wesker bashing! (40 hours to accomodate playing it through on the XBOX 360 and the PS3 :will: )

True, I tend to stay away from people who play music games that were poorly distributed in North America from 10 fucking years ago.

Hee hee. I remember when UT came out and I spent all holidays playing the demo online. I actually did well enough that people wouldn't believe I was an 11-year-old girl.

In some ways I don't mind being underestimated in gaming, but to answer the original post, I don't like being dismissed as someone who only plays 'girly' games.

See where I'm going? And even then, while the formula doesn't change, you can't exactly deny that Harmonix have done some upgrades to the formula to make it more enjoyable to a whole lot more people. Such as putting in whole songs, and songs that the North American public can recognize.

What new things have they done over the years? For DDR, those can be easily documented, and for Drummania/Guitar Freaks, the fact that you could join into a band was done before Harmonix had the idea for Rock Band, true. Except the core gameplay didn't change. Granted, they had it right for the drumming, but they still can't notechart for shit, it's still only 3 frets for the guitar, and the songs still aren't complete, last I checked. Perhaps in the home versions, but guess what, they were never ported over here, where a lucrative market would have likely jumped all over it.

So, yeah, that's my reasoning : They're not "vastly superior" because they're harder due to an outdated scoring and precision system, and while Bemani has came up with some interesting games, when was the last time Bemani has been considered best of genre outside Japan?

I prefer challenge over popularity. Better competition. I still like Drummania over Rock Band any day mostly because of the layout. Even in World Tour (GH) they don't give us a decent layout for the drums. Although I do like the new additions. I do agree with you on the aspect of the lack of frets in GuitarFreaks which still annoys me. Throw another one in and it'll be that much harder knowing Bemani. They did something like that for Beatmania. By throwing two extra keys at us for IIDX. I would prefer longer songs like a longer version of the Model DD series. From what I understand, I can see them doing that. Let's just hope we don't cramp up as fast as we would with a guitar hero controller. Which pisses me off because of one: it's too damn small. Two: I like the fact that you can wail it for timed bonuses as to wailing it at any time. But sometimes the wailing might throw your combo off.
And I don't think you've hit Arcade Infinity (CA) yet. You'll be amused. Besides, would it hurt the masses to know what came first? I'm tired of people saying that GH came before Beatmania. WHICH it did not. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to what came when.

World Tour has a shitty UI, end of story. For Drummania sure the layout is fine and the notecharting isn't that bad, but they really screwed the pooch in not allowing you full songs (hell, have the guys charge less but only 2 songs, or whatever). Also, if the pedal ain't broke, it's not an arcade. The thing's made out of iron/steel/whatever and it STILL breaks down on you because too many people don't know how to use the thing.

That's when they aren't pussies and use the "no pedal" function.

As far as "CHECK OUT ECKS WHY ZEE arcade they have it!", I've already played them, a lot. BEFORE GH EVEN CAME OUT. Then again, I play games for enjoyment and not "DURR HURR THEY'RE HARD!" Already, with actually complete songs I might have enjoyed it better. Let's face it, Black Sheep in a guitar game? Awesome. 1:30 of Black Sheep and shitty notecharts? Not awesome.

As an actual drummer, I am qualified to say that GH's rickety drum layout doesn't make a lick of difference when they're still having to overchart on the drums. And the notecharts suck anyways and the game looks like crap. And it smells funny. But really, just giving it two cymbals doesn't suddenly make it more realistic if you don't know how the drums work to begin with. I guess it makes it more appealing to random gamers, but I'm still drumming on a fucking Fisher Price drum kit.

I prefer RB's due to the fact that it's more evenly overcharted (snare and hi-hat on red, hi-hat and higher tom on yellow, ride cymbal and lower tom on blue, crash cymbal and floor tom on green-- totally simple to remember. Occasionally when miscellaneous percussion are added in, they are also given drums, but that's a whole 'nother story you don't care about). I'm still biased because of how much colossal dick World Tour sucks really, as already stated by Hatman. Ever since before Guitar Hero III we've been saying how awful it was going to become and hey! We were right. But RB has still accomplished what a lot of other band-instrument-rhythm-games in the genre haven't done: legitimate atmosphere (an actually important thing in the genre), good notecharting, software that is actually getting better with subsequent releases, an incredibly huge amount of songs and shit people actually care about.

Bemani IIDX is still one of my favorite rhythm games, but with Rock Band 2 I give less of a shit about *-mania with every day.

There's also the debatable, but totally true, deal that revolves around the fact that Guitar Hero I and II and Rock Band onwards actually had and still do have a soul to them. Or at least don't come off as embarrassing grandparents trying to fit in by being hip (Activision's Guitar Hero games). The Japanese rhythm games sort of look nice, but they're pretty much the most bare bones rhythm games you can find, although considering the GH alternative "who fucking cares".

If we head over to TAIKO NO TATSUJIN, however, it kicks the shit out of all a these fuckers. It's the goddamned cutest. Too bad it's also on the 1:00 songs route.

I would make love to these Taiko playing characters if they weren't children and if it would last more than a minute. I mean come on I'm an out of shape fucker and I can last longer than that.
