Thank you, that helped :edgy: I'm kinda in the same situation where I'm so hypercritical of my work, I just go, "This is stupid. I can't do it. I give up." which isn't a good attitude but... ech. I wish I could draw better; honestly, I have no patience with drawing. It wasn't a talent I purposefully attempted to expound on; writing was. It's gotten to the point that if I had a piece of paper in front of me, I could write out a random story I make up on the spot using both sheets of paper in no time, but drawing? Nada.

I'll tell you what's interesting: I was reading this passage in a book. The passage was talking about seeing what your doodles mean. I looked up abstract shapes and drawing people (the two things I usually doodle when I do feel like drawing). I think abstract shapes had something to do with organization (which doesn't make much sense) but drawing people apparently meant that you don't think you can draw that well. Which works perfectly for me, but I know numerous that it wouldn't, lol.

I know!! That's exactly what I get myself into. I wish I could draw better as well.. I envy so many artists on DeviantArt; the ones who have mastered working with OpenCanvas or any painting/drawing programs, in particular. Such beautiful lines.. such beautiful coloring techniques.. ;____; <3

I enjoy writing, but I struggle with transitions often (ex. in papers). I used to do a little bit of creative writing and I was once inspired by the fantasy genre (used to be a huge geek with my friends in high school about the fantasy/sci-fi genre). I had overly ambitious goals and wanted to write my own book; that didn't work out so well ^^;

My favorite part of creating a story is character creation. I LOVE IT! I love creating a character's outfit, general personality.. it's so fun. That's why I find that book's interpretation amusing - I mostly draw people. I don't think I'm HORRIBLE (stick figures, horrible proportions where the arm is bigger than the entire body, etc.), but just like most artists, I have my doubts and insecurities. I'm human! XD

Anyways, I used to love fashion design (took a generic course in high school) so I incorporated female video game character design into that. I come up with random video game character designs or draw ones that inspire me :B

Oh! What video games have you been playing? I don't have enough time to play any nowadays ~__~;

Wow. Your stuff is amazing. :O This stuff is really awesome. Wow. The textures, the colors--I don't think I've ever seen a graphic shop that good on the internets before. Do you make your brushes yourself?

I'm taking the TWEWY wallpaper for mah desktop. Thanks. :]

What an interesting coincidence. In my own writing, character creation is of secondary significance. What I love is making the characters interact in ways that will advance the plot and capture the interest of the reader. A static character by him/herself is predictable, but when characters interact, they become developed in much more depth, and they may grow to be much more complex than they were initially.

Sorry for the delayed response ^__^;;

Briar: Welcome to my thread!~ I really appreciate the compliments ^^;; I'm very happy that you enjoy my work - you're free to request something if you'd like.

I make my own brushes, yes, but for many of my graphics I have my own collection of brushes from DeviantArt and from a graphics community (close knit group of friends, yaddayadda) that I'm a part of. :]

You're very welcome (re: TWEWY wallpaper). Enjooooy.

Yggdrasil: If I ever wrote more than a chapter of anything I've attempted to write, I would probably enjoy character development (which I see as including character creation) the most as well. Agreed, characters become complex through interaction with others. It's certainly not enough to see a character talking to himself in a corner and brooding a lot.

I've noticed that at least some people like that sort of character...... after all, romance novels teach us that's an admirable characteristic of men, don't they? THOUGHTFUL AND MYSTERIOUS? O__o

Lol, I completely understand. I never did drawing early, so I'm afraid it might be late to really get far into it. I think that's why I admired you as a graphic artist so much; you didn't do hand drawing or stuff like that too much, but you were still good at graphics. I was always afraid I'd have to be good on drawing stuff either on a computer or not in order to do the graphics you do. So thanks for the hope XD

My writing is so ADD. I have a million ideas, but none of them really pan out to a whole story. I get bored, I guess, and want to move on. I think I'd do better with short stories, but even those aren't good; if I have a word limit, the story sucks completely. I guess maybe I do best with like five-chapter stories or whatever.... hm...

I agree! I love doing that! I also like character interaction and plot twists. When I was younger and drew a lot more, I'd always draw the characters I was writing about first. It'd get a good idea in my head. I sometimes still draw characters so that if I ever try to day dream ideas (yes, conciously day dreaming ideas; contradicive much? lol) I'd have a picture. I think I draw humans okay. They're not the greatest, but eh. I have a very strange style, I will admit. I draw objects the best, but I don't draw well overall, so eh. And yes, everyone's human. XD

That's neat! I always have ideas for character clothing. They are usually video game based (with... more covering, lol). It's fun to do, but I'm not very good at it :\

Quote:
Oh! What video games have you been playing? I don't have enough time to play any nowadays ~__~;

Right now, it's Jake Hunter; Detective Chronicles. It's okay; I needed a DS mystery fix because I hadn't played any good mystery games in awhile. The characters don't grow on you as much, and the mysteries are unfortunately so-so. But it's not bad for passing time and getting your lateral thinking cap on, lol. I'm also attempting FFIV on the DS. Classic game; I should be playing it more, lol, but I'm a wee bit stuck (why doesn't anybody sell ethers!? I have two spell-casters and one fighter, and I have no ethers! ACK!! lol)

I'm thinking of replaying Hotel Dusk (great game, BTW, if you want a good story. Gameplay is okay, but I adore the story) and Time Hollow (just cuz I heard of some other "options" you can do, lol)

YggdrasilsSword: Haha, yeah, it depends on the context.

BC: Good point. Yes, because those novels often teach women that if they stay in an emotionally-void relationship long enough, their boyfriends will change from being a cruel, possibly abusive person to a prince charming with sparkles, sunshine, and happy just from their undying love and blind commitment. Woo!

Briar:
No problem, I'll be here if you want anything. 8]

Caelestis:
Spoiler: somewhat long post
I've been drawing ever since I was 10-11, but that doesn't mean it's ever "too late" to get into it. It's never too late! Even practicing by doodling or sketching random things can help significantly. I encourage you to not dismiss it entirely just because you feel like you haven't started as early as other people.

Well.. I used to draw a lot (like, every class period) so it's not entirely true that I didn't draw often ^__^;; It's just that nowadays, I lack the time and motivation to continue drawing. I still draw for logos and such on occasion, too. :B

Anyways, I definitely attribute past experiences with drawing and art in general to whatever skill I have now with graphic design. In graphic design, it's necessary to be aware of composition, overall look, how the individual elements work together or in a particular area, how to work with typefaces... it can get complicated if you're serious about it. @__@; Therefore, previous experience helps. :)

Teehee, ADD writing characterizes some of my random writing. I have too many thoughts in my head.. so I switch topics a lot (somewhat like how I organize my posts in this thread - random discussion topics!)

Oh yay, another fan of character creation and development! :D
.. I painted a really nice green pepper once. I just thought I'd throw that out there, you know.
(This means I don't draw objects that well.. I don't think. It depends.. some come out ok, some really need to be burned..)

Video-game based clothing, woohoo! Yes, more coverage, please. >__>;
Ever want to show some of your work? I support you as an artist! :D

FFIV is difficult for me ^__^;;
Oh, I started Hotel Dusk and argh, never got around to finishing it.
I finished Time Hollow! I love the theme song.

Vicki or anyone else who is interested in reading it; I don't mind XD:

Spoiler: Very Long
*scratches head* I guess I should pick up drawing again. I wish I had a little more patience with myself. And that I wouldn't criticize myself :yuusaku:
I understand what you mean with graphic design. I suppose I find it easier than drawing on a different level. I honestly don't know how to explain it. I just find it easier for some reason... hm...

Haha, I'm the kind of person who can take a prompt for a story and suddenly create something. This is normally hit or miss, but hey.

An English teacher of mine a few years ago was explaining to us how the Rorschach testing actually works (we were reading excerpts from Flowers for Algernon). Apparently, you're supposed to attempt to almost create a story from what you see; say the characters, what problems they're facing, etc. So our teacher put a few examples up and you could pick one and write what you see. Most people said, like, "I see a koala bear with his mom" (actual example, lol).

I had written a story about two worlds, one technologically advanced and constantly looking at space with a giant observatory, and the other world was more industrial and constantly pelted by rain (so the whole world was eroding). The two worlds were connected by some elevator kind of thing and they traded often. But the imports from the rained-out world were becoming less and less; so two people decide to investigate privately and find out what happened. They find out that the whole world seems to have almost completely become dead due to the eroding properties of rain.

I wrote half of that in class because the teacher stopped us. I was too embarrassed to present mine in front of the class because it was so different from what others did. I thought about more of it throughout the day. Kinda of a silly story and I wouldn't know what to do with it, lol.

Hm... I'll think about the art proposition, lol. I haven't drawn much lately, but I could see... I still have those book covers I made on lined paper of the quartet I was planning... :D

Ah, good, I'm not the only one who's having trouble with FFIV, lol. You should finish Hotel Dusk when you can; I dunno about your tastes, but I love interactive storyline kinda things, so I loved it.
And yes, Time Hollow has an awesome theme song! It's a wee bit cheesy, but for a made-for-game theme song? Sounds absolutely wonderful! I have it in my iPod XD

Good news! I seem to have broken a little from my artistic-block! Gosh, even though I'm not completely out of the gutter, I feel a lot better than I have! You must understand that I almost never get those kinds of things :yuusaku: So this was quite an experience for me. Hit me rather hard, though; felt pretty groggy and felt like I was just walking through life, ya know? Ugh.
It's because there's this Final Fantasy-esque story that's been floating in my head since I was in elementary school and my bro introduced to me FF (so, quite a few years... lol). I have a friend who wants experience drawing anime/manga style (she's not, like, one of those super-duper-holy-crap-that's-freaking-awesome manga drawers, but I do see much potential), and we're thinking of turning the whole thing into a manga! So that makes me happy! :edgy:

BTW, do you play an instrument? I play piano :edgy: Ya know how I said I could take a writing prompt and run with it? I can do that with piano, now. I compose my own music frequently. It's not super awesome, but I guess many are impressed that I can do that. *shrugs* I've written a couple of songs, but still a progress, lol.

I have too many interests, lol

How are you doing Vicki?

Uff! School has been keeping me away from the computer for a while.

But now I'm ready to get you all bored with another one of my posts. XD
Well Vicki... It's been too long since the last time I posted. I just had a lot of chores and extra things to do that I didn't have a second to breath.
For the next week I have a ton of tests. The only good thing this week was that with a cousin (Ma' cousin Nicko! XD) we both beated RE5 (but I have some complains about the plot)

I just wanted to stop and say hello, comment a little bit and make a request... I just saw that the waitlist was short and thought I would ask a sig. only if time is good with you... please? XD

Spoiler: request details
Images:

Details: The Wesker with the gun in the left, the one with the red eyes in the middle and the one with his hand raised in the left, BTW both weskers with full body have to point their arms to the direction they are in.

Text:(In red leters with a white border... if it's possible) "The only thing that can defeat power is more power, that's the one constant in this world". Put it under the pictures please.

Colors: I'm not sure but I was thinking in dark green or in a dark red... I leave it up to you.

Size: the one you always use for sigs. XD

Extras: The pics from the sides (full body ones) shaded.

I hope you take the request... but maybe I won't be able to answer if you decline and if you accpet I won't be able to thank you when it's done cause I will be very busy until next friday but if you have it done for this sunday at least... well... I just want to tell you before I get busy... Thanks.

Best Wishes

Since the wait list is short, I was kinda wondering,
May I please have a wallpaper, por favor? XD I'd love it if it was like your edgeworth example, a bunch of pics and some nice designs. C:

Really? Thats awesome! Getting into most universitys is no small feat so congratulations! But you should never doubt yourself. From reading your responses in this thread I can tell you are very intellectual. (unlike me, I'm hella stupid)

I'm ok, a bit worried though because,
Spoiler: Slightly long-ish
Over in my school this week (MHCHS for anyone who heard about it on ITV news in the UK) A kid in the year above me came into school with a gun. Armed forces came before he could shoot anyone (of which apparently he was planning to do) and took the gun away from him. At the time I was excited because of the guns and the drug dogs etc but now I think about it, what if our school had been another one of those school massacres? And that scares me quite a bit. I just feel alot more insecure now that someone has come into school with a gun and what could have happened had he not have been caught. Apparently, he had shown someone his gun and told them who he was going to kill and thats how the police found out. But what if he hadn't shown someone? People could have died and thats made me all paranoid about going back to school.

Otherwise, I'm superrr, thanks for askingg...♪ :will:

I've never heard of Wabi Sabi @__@;
Good luck with homework!!

Just a little tired - then again, aren't we all?
Spoiler: Boringboringboring
Wabi Sabi: *Wabi-sabi represents a comprehensive Japanese world view or aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience. The phrase comes from the two words wabi and sabi. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete".*
Quite an odd and useless peice of information, actually. The program consisted mostly of one man's trip to Japan to discover 'the meaning of Wabi Sabi', only to find there wasn't one. Then he went to a monastery and was stalked by a polish/japanese monk. nightmares
I only really found it interesting because it gave a verrrry brief look into japanese life. (Male students = *druel* ^_^) When they looked into the art of the tea-ceremony, my mum was shocked at how small a 1-and-a-half-sized tatami room was....neither of my parents are all that clued up on Japan. They think my Studio Ghibli films are weird. )':

Hey everybody; I apologize for the mini-"hiatus" thing this weekend, I was in Washington D.C. for a women's leadership conference. It was cool and everything, but my group (representing our university) was extremely unorganized >__>;

Anyways, I get carsick (nauseous, no vomiting) real easily during 5-hour cartrips AND I have a huge midterm tomorrow with just a few hours to study tonight, so I'll be replying to your individual posts ASAP.

For anyone who has requested (since I saw some requests), sure thing :) Again, I'll address your individual posts soon.

Heyyyyyyy, another request? I'm sorry and I hope you don't mind...

It's just I like to have a matching sig for my fanfiction and when things change a little...

So...

Text: You’ve never been so used as I’m using you, abusing you, my little Decoy...

Don’t look so blue, you should have seen right through, I’m using you, my little Decoy...

(And then writen small in the right hand bottom corner) Mia Fey - The Story
(FONT: Same kinda thing as last time?

Image(s): http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x52/ToffeeNMallow/Mia-Feysig2-1.jpg
Please can I have the image in Box 3 as the faded background, tilted against eachother like in my current signiture.
Box 2 as slightly faded but so you can still see the colours.
Box 1 (with the sweet Dahlia picture) kinda overlaped over the angry Dahlia picture? not particulary faded and on the left of the signiture with Phoenix picture on the right.
I hope this makes sense...
Any preferred size: Same as my current?
Color scheme: Around the Phoenix and Dahlia picture in box 2 can i have a black shade coming from behing them and the main colour red and ice blue (from left to right as in red on Dahlia's side and ice blue on Phoenix's side.)
Extras? (hearts, stars, swirls, etc.): An Ice effect like last time, please?

Except for the red colour on this sig, could it please basically match the bue in my avatar?

I understand I'm not exactly great at explaining how I wan't these things I'm always so annoyingly specific with postitions so I'm soosorry abot that and I'm soo grateful for you making me these things...

Also I know there's alot of text so if there's too much you don't have to put the stuff in bold into the sig...

Hopefully this isn't too rambling and you'll get what I mean?
Thank you so much in advance. I know however this turns out will look good!

Well, is there a Men's Leadership Conference? Though it would probably be even less productive...

Aw, the mention of Flowers for Algernon reminds me of how sad the story was. :(

"I had written a story about two worlds..." That's fucking deep, man. Props to you for such a neat creation :D I would like to see more O__O Come to think of it.. I love picturing awesome, futuristic or "eroded" technological societies (like yours). Concept art that focuses on the environments are so cool.

I know that the Time Hollow song is in a DDR version - it came up while I was searching for it on Youtube, haha.

I don't play an instrument.. I wish I learned piano and/or guitar. When music was a requirement in elementary school, I picked the flute but hated practicing for hours so I quit band.

I hear ya - I have WAY too many interests as well (I want to learn how to sew, cook, bake... list goes on forever.)

Uh.. sorry, when I said "homework," I meant "cupcakes". >__>;
Thanks for the info! It went over my head a little, but it sounds very interesting. :)

Phoenix: Did you want two images? Your post has an "And" after the first image link so it looks like you may have forgotten a second image link, but I'm not sure. ^__^;;

Gray Godot:
Spoiler:
Good luck with schoolwork and tests! Schoolwork and DC had kept me away from the internet for a few days. I'm actually going to be spending most of my spring break writing research papers and catching up with work. x__o;

Inquiries about your request: "The pics from the sides (full body ones) shaded"; what does this mean?
"The Wesker with the gun in the left, the one with the red eyes in the middle and the one with his hand raised in the left, BTW both weskers with full body have to point their arms to the direction they are in" - so, to clarify, do you want them flipped or not?

Turnabout: Sure thing :) Yeah, I've noticed a severe lack of cool Layton wallpapers as well.. I will attempt to remedy that >:3

Selom:
Spoiler:
Thanks :) Columbia is actually one of the top 10 universities in the United States (Tier 1, they call it), so I'm super excited!!

I don't think you're stupid at all O__o; Why do you think so?

About the news: That's terrible :/ I would be paranoid about going back to school as well and I'm sure other students in your school feel the same so you shouldn't feel alone in your experiences. If you feel particularly shaken up by the experience, try to seek some counseling with a school counselor or even talking about it with family or close friends can help the coping process. Social support is key to many situations that deal with coping.

Cherry: Yeah, I finished TWEWY like a week ago! :D Haven't played "Another Day" yet. What's up with you?
I appreciate the checking up - ^^ I'm happy to hear what other people are up to as well!

Yuziki:
Sure thing - I like your art, the third picture is really nice! :)

Baron: The nausea wore off in about an hour or so, thankfully. *whew* I very rarely have to take five hour car trips but when I do... it tends to be a not-so-pleasurable experience.

I don't think I've heard "Colors".. but I have heard some of her new tracks from her new English album. It sounds pretty good. :)

Missile: Sure, Missile. The text should be fine but I'll let you know if I have any issues with it when I get to your request.

YggdrasilsSword:
Spoiler:
In my opinion, men are socialized to be more in leadership roles regardless (and are, especially in most of the Fortune 500 companies), but that's not directly related to the conference. It was mostly about women's leadership roles with regards to certain feminist issues like healthcare (i.e. fake healthcare clinics that purposely give women false information). Other topics addressed included how to focus on intersectionality within particular feminist groups on various college campuses, "feminism without borders,"... list goes on.

The conference was great in general, but I wish the workshops provided more new information and made us think more.

Thanks for the luck - the exam wasn't bad, but my hand was so cramped afterwards. 120 minutes of constant writing in essay form... something that I'm not accustomed to.

Percei: Thanks :D I'm actually going to switch to it once I get sick of my current wallpaper.

Congratulations on getting into Columbia University's graduate program. That's one of the schools I've thought about applying too, but I don't think I could afford to live in New York (and that's even if I could get in--never know if you don't try though, right?).

Your women's conference sounds interesting. This point strikes me as particularly interesting: "It was mostly about women's leadership roles with regards to certain feminist issues like healthcare (i.e. fake healthcare clinics that purposely give women false information)."

Where can I found out more information about this issue and how to help women avoid going to a place like this. Nothing is worse than false information. It reminds me of the stories my mother used to tell of previous times when doctors couldn't tell a woman how not go get pregnant, despite the fact that she no longer wanted children, or shouldn't have anymore due to health reasons.

I don't have a huge essay-like answer to your other question, but I do have a few female characters that I think are admirable.

Samus Aran (Metroid Series): Sure she is outfitted in a tight body suit underneath her powered armor, but this is one women that isn't in the games to look pretty, or provide healing and magic to a party. Samus is a protagonist, and that says a lot since she first began her journey on the NES. Her powers aren't based on emotions and I think are comparable to other heroes. The downside to her is two fold. For one thing, it wasn't made clear that she was a female until the end of her first game. Second, Samus' tight blue body suit, while necessary, also puts her into the sex object category in my opinion. Despite those facts, she seems like a strong video game character to me.

Sheva Alomar (Resident Evil 5): I haven't played much of her yet, but what I have I like so far. She seems just as tough and great with weapons as her counterpart, Chris Redfield. She wears clothes appropriate to the environment they are in (Africa), but it's not too terribly revealing. Sheva earns bonus points in my book for being not being Caucasian. There is nothing wrong with Caucasians (I'm one myself), but it is nice to see some variety in games.

Female Protagonist (Secret of Mana): The girl with no name, but one of the ones I like greatly. I always named her Julia when I played. She may be a magic user with healing spells as her focus, but I admire her because she could use the weapons just as well as the two male leads.

That ended up longer than I though it would.

Those are some good examples about good female characters but you could include Meryl from MGS.

Enough of that. Bye for now.

I know of Meryl, but I don't know much about her since I haven't really played MGS. I only know of the games because I've watched my husband play them. I really liked all the endings from MGS4, and I remember Meryl being in the game and some of her interactions with. . .I think his name was Johnny. I believe he was made fun of for not being able to handle himself. From what I have seen of her she's one tough woman, and I think stronger than some of the men in her unit. I'd say she would be another one to add to the list.

Spoiler: REALLY LONG POST (I'm not kidding)
Thanks for the congratulations! Yeah, I'll have to commute probably which sucks because it'll be a 2 hour commute (one way) and I absolutely detest commuting. Then again, I'll weigh the pros/cons of dorming which is very expensive and might not even be worth it if I only have class two to three days a week.

I'm glad you're interested in this 'fake clinic' topic. Basically, they were referring to pro-life clinics that mislead women into thinking they could go there for healthcare or information such as abortion. They mislead because until very recently many of these clinics didn't even have a trained, licensed, medical professional as part of their staff (and even nowadays, to counter this outrage about having no medical professionals, they will list a medical professional as part of their staff but this person won't even be in the clinic for most of the time). They draw college students or poor, uneducated, etc. women by placing ads on college campuses that say something like, "Pregnant? Don't know what to do?"
They also have names like CHOICE MEDICAL CENTER (when they really don't provide choice or any medical services).

They often are near Planned Parenthood clinics as well; since most of these clinics are strictly run by volunteers and they do not provide any real medical services, their cost is very low in comparison to the medical supplies needed by actual clinics. This is why in some states, the number of fake clinics can sometimes be equal to the number of Planned Parenthood clinics.

This is an example of a situation that can happen:
A girl walks in, says she's pregnant, and wants to know her choices. She may or may not say that she's considering having an abortion. The "medical professional" may then provide her with outrageous materials in order to persuade her from having an abortion. Real story, actually, a woman wrote an blurb about how the "medical professional" played a fake ultrasound (presumably hers) that showed a baby that was seventeen weeks old when in actuality, this woman was six weeks pregnant. The video looped over and over.

These centers also provide very misleading information such as: abortions will affect future reproductive ability, abortions increase risk of breast cancer, and women will inevitably suffer from PTSD after an abortion.

The main take-home point: Whatever your position is on abortion and the right to choice, so-called "women's health" centers SHOULD NOT be giving women misleading and outright false information about their health. This can have severe consequences; we should be educating women, not deceiving them.

More information:
http://www.fwhc.org/abortion/fake.htm
I recommend that you simply Google for "crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs)" or "fake clinics" - most of my information is from offline sources.

Responses to characters:
Samus Aran (Metroid Series):
I love Samus when she had that power suit.. unfortunately, they had to immediately negate that awesomeness by providing a "reward" at the end of Metroid with her in a red bikini. Oy.
I can't stand the change in her armor and I refuse to regard the blue suit as actual "armor." Sigh.
Nevertheless, I do respect how she's been a protagonist and a force to be reckoned with for over twenty years.

Sheva Alomar (Resident Evil 5):
I haven't played RE5 but I have seen some of the demo. I love her look and the whole "badass" personality; she's not entirely helpless like that Ashley (?) girl. I have been waiting for more games to come out with more equal partnerships so I'm excited about RE5's take.

I'm not sure if I mentioned Zoey from L4D or basically most of the women from the Valve games but yeah, I have a huge amount of respect for Valve considering out of eighty-five employees (estimate that I had to research for a big paper last semester), there are only about five women and most of those women are in non-character development/game development job positions.
THERE IS HOPE.

Gray Godot: Thanks for the clarification! :)
Meryl is a great example though I have never played any of the MGS games so I can't provide any specific examples or anything ^^;

yuzikichan: You're welcome :B
Oh, you've played touch detective? I need to finish that... I'm on the second case, I think.

76: Sure thing! :) I'll add you to the waitlist.
