One post at a time, I'll be going through what I believe to be exceedingly good cartoons of the Japanese variety; my big favorites. I've seen a very, very huge amount. Like, hundreds and hundreds and I'd say I have a pretty good idea of what makes an anime a good one. Thus, I shall be willing to educate and inform you of many series which you may not have heard of or seen before. Think of it as my gift to you, CR. If this goes well I might backtrack and do a Top 100, filling in #100-51 animes that were not included.

I am sad to say I won't be including mangas, so Tezuka works shall remain largely unseen. Sadly.

Now before we begin, I'd like to first tell you what popular animes are not going to show up that I figure you guys might ask about. Reasons include being a bad adaptation or me just not outright liking them. The latter applies to most of it.

Spoiler: STUFF THAT SUCKS AND ISN'T ON MY LIST
Death Note, Evangelion, Robotech/Macross anything, Gundam Wing or any of the shitty bishounen Gundams, Code Geass, anything by CLAMP, Haruhi Suzumiya, anything by Kyoto Animation that isn't Fullmetal Panic Fumoffu!, Naruto, Bleach, or many of those FIGHTAN ANIMUS

However, I still like Haruhi and fightan animu

And before you guys who know me jokingly say "Giant Robo Baccano! Akagi for #1 spot", let me tell you that those animes will not actually be featured in the top ten and maybe not even top twenty. Yeah. You heard that right. This list will go from 40 years back to the present day. That's a lot of anime competing with each other.

Shit just got real. Let the hypefest begin.

special thanks to my friend tom who helped me organize and brainstorm and make me remember stuff that was really good

Dog of Flanders (TV 1975 version)

Dog of Flanders made me cry pretty hard. It's a tough anime on you. It's beautiful, really. Compared to contemporary works, it holds up surprisingly well, especially as an emotional affair. It's also surprisingly feel good, despite that famous, heart-breaking ending. You see, Dog of Flanders follows Nello Tarth, a poor, but bright parent-less lad who lives with his grandfather Jehan in a tiny village, located in Belgium. It turns out that Nello has a keen talent for drawing, becoming fascinated by the world of art. He befriends and meets this dog, Patrash, who was a poor old working dog who was heavily mistreated by his owner. Nello takes care of him and they develop a deep friendship with one another. Along with Patrash, Nello is also friends with Alois, who is the daughter of a very rich man in the villag.

As Nello decides to pursue a career in the world of art, the people around him and Alois's father grow colder and more distant, seeing him as a slacker and poor fool, mocking and deriding him for his dreams. All with the exception of Aloi and Patrash, who remain his only friends. Facing troubled times and the sorrows of being pennyless, Nello meets more trouble than you'd want him to. Still, it progresses very naturally, almost peacefully and slowly. Again, if compared to today's works, it might seem to go on for far longer than one would hope, but with patience and an ability to really get into it, you'll find Dog of Flanders to be a rich, rewarding series.

I must also reiterate. The ending? You can't bring up Dog of Flanders without it coming up. Poignant, touching, but most of all terrifically sorrowful. It just may be one of the saddest endings in all of Japanese animation.

Those 2 mains characters remind me a lot of the 2 main characters from Castle in the Sky.

Anyway... aw, no CLAMP or Death Note? I mean, I know those aren't the best... but I'd think they'd at least be in the top 50 o_O Oh well, it's your opinion...

There's a lot of anime in this world, and HH has seen a lot of them. In the end, we focus in on our favourites because of how much they meant to us, at a certain point in our lives. It's either nostalgia or current applicability. Sometimes, you need someone with knowlege to put it all into perspective.

I'm certainly interested in what he has to say.

Bartender (TV 2006)

Bartender is not for everyone. Characters pause the show and speak directly to the camera as if it was theater, the pacing relies on development of atmosphere more than the development of characters, and the main character is more of a ghost than a human being, although he certainly has his moments. Bartender is about Ryu Sasakura, a prodigal mixer of drinks who tends the mysterious Eden Hall, a hidden bar in downtown tokyo. Each episode follows a new "main" character, who narrates and introduces their woes or sorrows. With nowhere else to go, they find themselves in Eden Hall, with Sasakura there to help.

With an anecdote, some helpful guidance, and some charismatic relief good ol' Ryu Sasakura will find a way to relate their plight to that of an alcoholic beverage, one that will sooth and ease their soul. The Drink of the Day format never wears out its welcome, partly due to how clever Bartender uses it as a premise. It's a true Three-Ring Circus. You'll laugh as the awkward scientist tries to fit into the bar on a packed night out, you'll shed a tear as a business woman relates the story of her father and grandfather's rivalry, you'll wish the best for the new couple as they try to make their relationship work out.

This all happens in that one, little bar. And it's engrossing beyond belief. Bartender is sharp, well-written, gorgeous to look at, and you may even learn a thing or two.

Honestly, that's just your opinion of what anime is really great, sucks shit, and what you don't like.

I'll hang on to this thread because it will probably have some great suggestions I could watch and enjoy. Why don't you all do the same instead of bitching about his preferences?

Armored Trooper Votoms (TV 1983)

While it is admittedly overshadowed by Gundam and a few other Real Mech series that out-popular it, Votoms still holds a strong following for good reason. It's pure cheesy-ass hard science military fiction with fucking mechs at it's best. Definitely a classic of the genre and one of my personal favorites. It follows a pilot named Kiriko Kyuubi, a man who was once the member of an elite mecha battalion (the mechas in this are VOTOMS by the way, in case you missed that) under the name of the Gilgamesh Confederation. The GC has been battling the Balarant Union, a rival nation, for a century-long war whose initial cause is actually forgotten. They're just stubbornly doing what they can to try to kick the other guy's ass harder and not get beaten down. Well, Kiriki finds himself transferred to this unit who is working on a rather suspicious mission. Turns out that-- whoops! He just got set up and framed, accidentally helping out the enemy. So he finds himself arrested as a traitor, tortured and beaten.

His escape is what triggers the rest of the series. Now everybody is after him. Armies and bounty hunters hunt him down while he does what he can to to try to figure out the conspiracy behind his betrayal. And damn is it good. The show is riddled with twists, turns, badass combat sequences, fun characters and... Aw fuck. Basically, Votoms does what every Real Mech show tries and wants to do. And then it curbstomps its fucking face into the ground.

There's nothing else to really say about it. It's just a damn good mech show and you owe it to yourself to watch it.

I could use a decent list of peer-reviewed, mostly unknown anime.
I don't know if these genres are your thing, but if you have any suggestions for good fantasy or "mystery-esque" anime, I'm all ears. :edgy:

(BTW, is Tezuka you're talking about the one who wrote Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion? The latter being suspiciously similar to the Lion King? XD)

I've got several good fantasies actually! And a very, very good mystery anime happens to be in the Top 3, which I'll try to get to as soon as possible.

Kimba actually came first by many, many years and there aren't too many actual similarities.

Yes, I knew that Kimba came first. I only saw the preview of it, so I guess it wasn't exactly right to say it was "similar" too quickly :yuusaku: Anyhow...

This list looks like it's going to be fun, mostly because I probably won't recognize a lot of the shows on your list.

I can't believe you actually sat and ranked them, though. Phew. Couldn't do that.

I wonder how long it'll take before we get to an anime I've seen... (let alone one I've heard of! xD)

(Although since you didn't put Naruto in your list of popular animes that won't be there, I guess I'll at least get that  )

An addendum has been made. Naruto, Bleach, One Piece (although I actually LIKE One Piece) or any of the other currently big "fightan animu" series will probably not be included.

If you guys may be patient, I'm going to finish up the rest of the 40s with a big giant post today. And then we move on to the 30s!

Sakigake!! Otokojuku (TV 1988)

Otokojuku is sort of a smarter series than it looks. At its core, it's a parody of Japanese nationalism, but it also retroactively seems to work as a relation to the "hotblooded" and "manly" action series of the past and today. Characters are large, beefy, misogynistic muscleheads with hearts of gold. Black, American men are scum. Students rough-house and teachers speak of honor & pride. The word manly is thrown around a lot. There's nonstop fighting.

But damn, it's fun. Just as fun as any other series it pokes fun at, which it does well. It's parody elements aren't too strong though, they certainly don't overshadow the actual comic and action aspects. You see, Sakigake!! Otokojuku is about this anacrhonistic school where young men are trained to "revive the spirit of Japan". The school is led by Heihachi Edajima, an almost stereotypical World War II veteran who beats his students hard and demands the best of their JAPANESE PRIDE who actually stars in his own prequel manga series that is also very good. He is countered by the main character Tsurugi, a first year student who is laid back, wise, manly, strong, and an all-around nice guy at heart. He sort of looks and acts a little like a more sociable Jotaro Kujo. Along with him are his friends, all of which fill in archetypes and niches of the "friend cast", but they play it well. There are occasionally females, but who needs those fuckers

dis is a mans series yo

Sad that One Piece will not be included but if you are going for the more under appriciated anime's that's fine by me. I've already developed an interest in 'Bartender' so I'll definitely be keeping an eye out on this list!

Aria the Animation & sequels (TV Anime 2005-2008]

Aria is a show that is hard to talk about. Nothing happens. It's about a group of girls who ferry gandolas on a water-filled Mars in the far future and... that's basically the extent of the premise. It's ridiculously cheerful, however, in the most soothing, therapeutic ways imaginable. The art direction adds to its calming appeal; Aria is very beautiful and easy on the eyes. The girls are all cute too, with Akari, the main character, being so optimistic that you'd think it would bug you. But it doesn't. Because that's just how Aria rolls.

The Girl Who Leapt through Time (Movie 2006)

This is probably one of the biggest anime movies out there right now. It made a huge splash in the community when fansubs rolled around and it's won a lot of awards in the real world. All for good reason, it's a damned fantastic film. The premise is a little goofy, but it works. Makoto is this sort of takes-it-as-it-comes girl who accidentally stumbles upon a nut which, when cracked, gives her the ability to go backwards in time when she takes a running leap and jump. Pretty cool right? Makoto agrees. One of her first and several subsequent uses for this power is to eat the pudding she left in the fridge before her sister can steal it from her.

But, despite how it sounds, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is actually a surprisingly sweet romance. It's simple, not overly complicated or developed, but thoroughly touching all the same. The characters really grow on you and the artwork is just gorgeously animated. Take and accept the bizarre setup, because it's a great film all the same.

Spoiler: #44
Image

Lovely Complex (TV Anime 2007)

Fuck yeah Lovely Complex. What's that? You mean the premise of it is that the guy, Ootani, is really short and the girl, Koizumi, is really tall? That's ... really stupid. Oh boy, they're both really tsundere towards each other and people tell them they should hook up but they say they don't like each other. I sure wonder how it turns out-- wait, did she just realize she has feelings for him?! BUT I'M ON EPISODE SIX. WAIT DID SHE JUST CONFESS?!

WHAT.

Yeah, Lovely Complex has speedy fucking pacing compared to how you'd think a show like this would progress. They fight, sure, but don't spend the whole show being dumbasses. Their relationship drama is warranted, never coming off as petty, and as characters they really grow on you. The side-cast helps things out by always sticking to the sidelines, ready to help out, but never falling off the radar. In fact, despite how nobody really gets much spotlight outside of the two main characters, they all had pretty strong personalities. Lov*Com aced the whole "character-driven romcom" thing damn well.

5 Centimeters Per Second (Movie 2007)

This is a work of art. Truly, a work of art. It's possibly the most breathtakingly gorgeous conventionally drawn anime film you will see and, oddly enough, for something so beautiful there usually isn't much to look at. The settings to this tend to be the inside of mundane homes, a classroom, the area outside of a convenience store at night. But the details are what make it. And do details really rock the hell out of this film.

There are three short, related "episodes" that make up 5 Centimeters (each following the same main character), with the first being that a young boy and a young girl are very much in love. But the girl's father gets a job, relocating many cities over, away from the boy. This sets off a very subtle, slowly moving chain that splits them apart. The catalyst to the sad, inevitable breakoff of their relationship. I would love to go on and fully review this work, but there are issues with spoilers that would obviously come up. Let me simply say, you must see this film.

Seto no Hanayome (2006)

Fucking Seto no Hanayome I LOVE SETO NO HANAYOME

GODDAMN

OKAY GET THIS SHIT THIS GUY ALMOST DROWNS IN THE OCEAN RIGHT?!

Well he almost drowns but he gets saved by a mermaid and he has to marry her because the mermaids are actually like fucking YAKUZA MAFIA SHIT and they'll kill him if he doesn't keep their secret. Well, they actually all want to kill him anyways, but the mermaid that saved him, San, has sort of fallen in love with him.

I swear to god I'm not kidding, this is really good. It's batshit insane hysterical, I cannot even begin to describe how funny and awesome this show is

It's odd how I've heard of most of these, while not having heard of some of the more popular ones

Bobby's In Deep (Single-episode OVA 1985)

Bobby's In Deep is so utterly bizarre and memorable that there is no other number to hold its place on my list than Ooglurfka, which is Germanese for that sound you make when you throw up and you see stuff in your vomit that is really awesome. Go on and check a dictionary it's in there. Comparable to vomit, Bobby's In Deep was supposed to be a promotional work designed to show off some fresh-faced idol nobody cared about because his career went nowhere.

But it's worthy because of what you find poking around in that vomit. And what you find doesn't need to be scavenged, because just like when you open your eyes and try to stick your head out of that freshly filled toilet full of gooey stomach juices, what catches your eyes draws you in and doesn't let go. Bobby's In Deep is the beautifully animated, hand-drawn, slowly paced mental journey of a possibly autistic kid and his love of motorcycles. His photos or writings (I cannot remember which) for a motorcycle magazine catch the eye of a mysterious, un-named girl who writes to Bobby. They slowly become friends.

And that's all I can tell you about it. You really need to watch for yourself. It's only thirty minutes long and worth it. It's experimental and subtle. There may not even be anything there at all. But it's unique and there wasn't much like it back then and certainly not now. It's very much an art-house piece.

Dog of Flanders is way too low on your list. Needs to be number 7.
