Nobody's Boy Remi (TV Anime 1977)

Nobody's Boy Remi is in the vein of Dog of Flanders (in fact it's by the same people), except with more child suffering. It is about a world in which God hates children and likes seeing them be unhappy, laughing at every miserable opportunity they get to relieve themselves of pain, only to turn it around and crush their hopes and dreams all at once. This happens for like thirty episodes nonstop. That isn't actually the storyline, but it may as well be. It's pretty sad. I already went on about Dog of Flanders and a lot of what I said about it applies here. Except this has a less depressing ending.

I'm dropping actual numbers for the next while until we get to either #20, #15, or #10 and then I will resume in typical number list fashion. So basically I'm expanding this list beyond just 50.

Also, Remi is a slightly bit more mainstream as it has been translated in numerous languages already.

Ouran High School Host Club (TV Anime 2006)

Ouran is a funny series. It's a parody of those bishounen-driven series to catch the yaoi fans, yet that's also it's honest appeal and why it's popular. The very things it pokes fun at, its fans take seriously. But it does that poking so very well and the boys have such endearing personalities... It's honestly hard not to get caught up on them. The main character, Haruhi, is also a very stable and mature female. She's rather masculine too, making an interesting twist on the typical "girl with man harem" conventions. Highlights of show are the final episode (an overdramatic, but touching, take on cheesy Victorian romances) and the twins, Hikaru and Kaoru, who hold great presence and are always interesting on-screen.

I swear, when I first saw this anime, I thought that the homo twins were the main dudes of the show.

Junkers Come Here (Anime 1994)

A little girl, Hiromi, has a huge hard on for Amuro Ray. Unable to talk to real people about her problems, she confides in her wish granting, talking, miniature Schnauzer, Junkers. Junkers also moonlights as a priest. Together, Hiromi and Junkers stalk Amuro relentlessly. There's also some weird love square between Hiromi, Amuro, an old maid, and some random hoebag Amuro picks up. The movie climaxes at a scene where Junkers whisks Hiromi away in giant piss bubbles. Then it turns out Junkers could never talk. Hiromi's just crazy. HH likes this because piss bubbles smell great and the scene with Arnold Schwazenegger is cool.

Legend of Legendary Legends (Legend 1997)

This is the legendary anime about legends who legendarily make legends while playing with Lego-legendary legends. It's a legend because its legends are so legendary that you would need a legend to make out who's more legendary than the other legendary legend of legends. It takes a lot of knowledge of the ancient legendary legends to see the legend in this legendary legend of legendary legendic legends. As such, this is a legendary legend of legendary legends told in a legendary way fitting such a legendary legend about legendary legends who legendarily and legitly create legends.

That said... needs more Berserk and Nausicaa

Mononoke (TV Anime 2007)

"Mononoke? You mean Princess Mononoke! Oh I love that movie"-- No fuck you, Mononoke is a recent anime of the occult and horror variety, with some added Main Character Forever Traveling, ala Mushishi and Kino's Journey. It follows a Medicine Seller, the main character, on his wanders and "adventures" in finding and destroying spirits that should not be in this world. It's surreal. The picture I used? Yeah, the show actually looks like that. Constantly. And it looks even more amazing in motion, as the textures that make up clothing and colors are layered underneath the foreground-- making a motionless layer that people seem to walk over, a technique seen in Gankutsuou (look for it later on in my list) and various other American works. It's an impressive work of visual art on its own, but god is the rest of it great. Pure atmosphere, always eerie, always sinister, always bizarre.

Mononoke may actually be considered one of the most experimental animes there have ever been, seamlessly blending together a variety of styles and genres (murder mysteries and the historical) along the way, which combined with that bold art style, just forms an excellent overall experience. It's just a work of art really.

Constantly impressive and infinitely entertaining to boot. Watch this immediately.

no

I don't think highly of Ghibli films in general, being sort of easily digestible, unoffensive works that are all handled with a lot of professionalism and care, but don't really do anything for me

My Neighbor Totoro is my favorite work of Miyazaki's and I may or may not include it

It feels sort of pointless, since everyone on earth has seen his stuff and it'd be a waste of a space to try to sell it to someone.
