I play card games, but not the ones that involve trading cards.

So, back when I was looking at games to try to play, I looked at Magic. I kinda wanted to play it, but then I noticed a lot of the regional level tournaments were draft, and that a portion of Nationals or whatever, was also draft. So, I pose to you fine people this question: Who the hell thinks draft is in any form a real competitive format? Seems like random trash to me.

Because constructed Magic players are conceited douchebags. Draft Magic is fine.

So I'm going to some pokemon regional sunday or something like that. I dunno. I don't really have a deck, but I'm going. I also kinda got dragged into going all the way to St. Louis for Nationals, without a deck. Oh boy.

You better come back with the following quote :

"Pickens won a Nationals by using a deck he built in a car trunk... with a bunch of scraps!"

I think Texas hold 'em is my favorite. But I'll also play five-card varieties and if someone refreshes my memory with the rules I also play a game called pitch (though the same could be said for any game, hah). And of course you can't forget good old go fish :P
Cards are fun. I could totally see myself blowing entire afternoons at an outdoor eatery somewhere (probly Greece) playing cards.

I very much wish this could be true, but I'm no Tony Stark.

Soo uuuh, I went to this this weekend.

Pokemon players are some of the nicest people I've ever played. Even though I did godawful (2-6), I still have to say it was pretty fun. On a tight deck budget, I ran a really random water/psychic deck that juggled a bunch of plus powers and did a lot of indirect/stacking damage. Even though the deck was pretty sucky, people seemed to think it was a cool idea at least, so I was happy about that.

The judges suck though, they're really uptight about the stupidest stuff. Deck placement, energy placement, level x placement, and they can't answer hypothetical questions, so if you want a ruling on something you have to actually do it before they'll tell you how it works. It sucked too, because it could be the most obscure random not in the rule book thing, and you'd have to penalize yourself to figure out if it worked or not.

I found myself hating the game itself a lot too. It feels fast but kind of slow at the same time. People draw huge hands and in most cases, when it isn't your turn, you pretty much just watch your opponent as they do stuff and there's very little you can do about it. The game's turn one rules are pretty dumb too. If you go first, you can't play supporters/trainers/stadiums. There were a few times where I'd get a hand of one basic pokemon, some trainers and some energy, win the dice roll (it's mandatory that the winner of the dice roll go first), and I'd pretty much be able to do absolutely nothing but play a basic pokemon and an energy, while my opponent who lost the dice roll gets to play all the trainers they want to and get completely set up. This wouldn't have been so bad if the rounds were best 2 out of 3, but they were best of 1, so if you had crummy luck then you were just screwed for the entire round.

The video game National tournament was going on at the same time and looked infinitely cooler. Too bad they capped attendance at something like 120 people and did a random drawing to see who got to play.

Overall, I couldn't recommend this game to anyone, but the people were nice and they gave out a ton of free stuff at least.
