Elmwood? Sounds familiar...is he there on behalf of Glen perhaps?
This looks promising and I'll read the next part when posted.
Thank you Missile.X. It's always nice to hear pleasent reviews. I didn't think of Glen Elg to be honest, but that would have been a nice tie in... The name Gary Elmwood may seem familar because I did a comic staring him a while back. 'Gary Elmwood: Arogant Attorney'. Have you seen it?
This chapter was a little rushed towards the end I'll admit.
Chapter 2: Lucian Vermont
Elmwood… Hammond thought he had heard that name somewhere before… A long time ago…
“Well!?” Gary shouted, interrupting Robert’s thoughts. “Are you going to help him or are you going to sit there like a lemon!?”
“I haven’t made up my mind yet.” Hammond replied abandoning his trip down memory lane. “I need to gain a good understanding of the case before I make a decision. So you need to calm down and-”
“How can you expect me to be calm!?” Gary bellowed. “My brother’s been accused of killing someone!”
“Ah so it’s a murder case.” Hammond said as he wrote down the information on the application form. “And your brothers the defendant?”
“Yeah nice work Sherlock.” Gary replied cheekily. “God I’m shocked you became a lawyer instead of a detective.” Hammond frowned at the boy’s sarcasm but in a strange way he was amused by the odd confidence he displayed.
“What’s your brother’s name Gary?”
“Edward Elmwood, although most people know him as Lucian Vermont.”
“Lu-Lucian Vermont!” Robert gasped. He couldn’t believe his ears. “You do mean the rock singer, Lucian Vermont?”
“Yeah that’s right, if you can call him a singer. More of a screamer if you ask me.” Gary smirked. “I’ve got his picture on my shirt.”
Hammond took a closer look at Gary’s shirt. It showed presumably Lucian, screaming into a microphone. His face was very pale and he wore a lot of black make up. His eyes were red and he was wearing a silver skull stud on his right ear.
Saying Lucian Vermont was ‘doing pretty well’ was an understatement. He was the face of rock at the moment. The fact that Robert, a man in his 50’s who listened to jazz in the evening with a glass of brandy, knew about him showed how famous Mr. Vermont was. Hammond could just imagine the payout on this case. If he won he would get a hefty sum of money as well as getting the reputation that he deserved. Maybe he could even open his own law offices. He knew he had to take it.
“Alright Mr. Elmwood. If I want any more information, I think I’m going to have to speak to Edward myself.” Robert said, as he got up from his desk, grabbing the application form.
“You mean… Your gonna do it? Your gonna defend my big brother?” Gary asked, with a desperate look in his bright green eyes.
“Well I’ll have to meet him first before I make a decision.” Robert lied as he grabbed his black coat from a hanger by the door. “But I think that I will take his case, yes.”
Gary sighed and seemed to sink into his chair. Robert put on his black coat and did up the buttons. He looked at Gary who was now staring at the rain.
“We’ll need to go before the detention centre closes.” Hammond told Gary.
“We’re gonna get soaked you know.” He replied gloomily.
“Ah but that’s where your wrong.” Hammond smirked as he picked up a black umbrella from a nearby stand and opened it up and opened the door.
“But the weather didn’t say it was going to rain today.” Gary said as he got up and stood next to Robert.
“I’m a man who likes to cover all his bases.” Robert smirked as he walked out of his office, with Gary close behind him
After a short walk from the office, Gary and Robert arrived at the detention center. In the lobby there were 3 other people seating, obviously waiting to visit their detained loved ones. The jailer was sitting by a desk in a bright blue uniform, reading a newspaper. Its headline read ‘Murder at the courthouse.’
“Hold this.” Robert told Gary as he handed the umbrella to him. He undid the first two buttons on his coat, making sure his attorney’s badge was in sight. He then wandered over to the jailer and put the application form on the desk that was in front of him. The jailer then slowly put his paper down.
“Yes?” He asked Robert.
“Good afternoon. I’m Robert Hammond. I’m here to talk to Edward Elmwood about his defense next Thursday.”
“Who?” The jailer, asked confused. He paused for a moment thinking. “Oh you mean Mr. Vermont! I’ll send you right in Mr. Hammond” The jailer then shot up and led Hammond and Gary down what looked like an endless hallway.
“I’m a big fan of Lucian Vermont you know.” The jailer explained as they walked. “In fact I went to see him at his concert last week. It was brilliant. He’s such a great singer.” Robert didn’t know whether he should cry or laugh at the fan boy jailer. Gary however was smiling. Perhaps it was because he liked hearing his brother being described so positively. “It’s a shame that the concert was cut short.”
“What happened?” Robert asked pretending to be interested.
“I don’t know. He probably rocked too hard or something. He was half way through, ‘Cold heart’ too…” The jailer suddenly stopped at a door saying ‘cell #3.’
“Well here we are Mr. Hammond.” The jailer chirped. “Say hi to Lucian for me.” He chirped as he started to walk back to his desk whistling.
Robert wandered into the room to see Mr. Vermont behind a glass screen and sat down in the chair across from him. Gary sat in the one next to it. Lucian’s hair was jet black, and looked like a mop. He was wearing a black leather trench, a black shirt and black trousers along with a pair of black shades. Everything about this guy was black.
“Hello there mortal.” He laughed. “Are you here to assist me?”
