I suggest trying paint spriting, if only for a couple of sprites. Then you can get used to the spriting mindset, if you know what I mean.

Hmmm, so I shouldn't have started from scratch again?

To be honest, I've been recoloring and editing sprites since last November (I've never had any finished products, though, hence why I call Turner my first true sprite edit), and I've gotten quite used to Photoshop. I went back to Paint, and honestly, it just doesn't suit me. I dunno why, but I'm already so comfortable with Photoshop, and I've kind of had the spriting mindset for a while, I just never put it to much use.

Personally, I like your first shot at Turner a little better; he's already halfway there, just needs a little bit of a push before he's a solid sprite. Work on the hair a little, give it more definition, especially in the zoom shot. I'd tone down the colours a little bit, too. I can appreciate the look you're going for, and part of me ogles over the bright colours with delight, but in the end if you're going to be running with a GS style, I think you need to pull it back a little, drop the saturation a bit. Neeeeeext fix his buttons on his jacket, they really stand out to me.

Nothing to really suggest apart from that! The base (Apollo) is v. obvious, but I don't think that really matters. Clever integration of Godot's arm, too; the shading works well and doesn't betray the fact they're from two different styles.

With the hair, I'm taking SilentBobX's advice and using mainly Diego's hair color. I don't like those colors AT ALL, it looks like something Payne would wear. I took Phoenix's suit color and I changed the color a little bit (can't remember if it's slightly brighter or darker than Nicks). I'm not even sure if I want yellow buttons anymore, I kinda like the black ones in my 2nd beta sprite.

Nah nah nah mate, it's not about the COLOUR, it's about the lines, how well it's drawn and stuff. At the moment, it's just sorta a big BLOB on his head. The colours at the moment are fine (though if you want to go to Diego's, not stopping you, completely your decision), but there just needs to be a bit more shading and definition going on. I don't know how to describe it. ;-; /wrist

Ah, yeah, I've been working on that, Glace sent me a link to lines and how to shade them. I'm learning how to do that, although it's quite difficult... :payne:

Haha, I don't blame you at all. When it comes to shading hair, I tend to curl up into the foetal position and just forget about spriting for a few weeks.

Steal Borrow little bits from official GS sprites, editing and recolouring and stuff if you think it'll help. The key is not to just copy/paste and slap a new colour on it, though; when you start fiddling with its shape buuuuuut still keeping the shading and stuff, that's a good ground to get to.

OF COURSE it's better if you can learn to do it from scratch, but hey, just throwing out the lesser alternative >_>"

Well, most of his hair is from Young Klavier, but that's a total pain to recolor, going from blonde to black, but all I really have to do is develop a sense of patience, which I'm starting to get.

Volty approves! Although I'm not going to use it on account of a personal policy of using only things I make in my sprite topic, it'll give me something to reference. Thanks, BruDude!

P.S. Yes, I'm still working on Turner. I have to restart his Normal pose on account of screwing up the colors, so I'm working on a desk slam sprite. And NO, I'm not using the brush or eraser tool, just straight up pencil tool.

Still, did you think of making these two animated like Larry's and Meekins's sprites?

Probably not, considering that their under masks and junk. Plus, those two sprites are gonna be used in the opening of Case 2, which is gonna be like, a bad TV program. So the fact that they have a limited animation will work better for whatever.

Also there's the fact that I have no idea how to actually do stuff like that, because I'm still really lame with editing.

I just made it a still photo. The sprites in the .zip in the character section don't have just his salute just chillin' there. So I just made it it's own picture for easy use. Like I said. Minor sprite edit. The minor-est of them all <3

Update!

I have no idea why they never used the faces Larry used in the Santa outfit for the rest of his character. So I did that!

Spoiler:
Image Image Image ImageImage Image Image Image Image Image Image

For a couple of the sprites, I changed the body a smidge, which now constitutes as my first super-legit sprite edit! Goooo me!

I'm working on doing the same poses for Laurice and KB Larry, as well as a new pose for Dr. Grey. (Don't ask why I'm so obsessed with this character)

I noticed that I need to touch up my Objection Bubbles, because every gif I save ends up having some white lines on the end of that. How do I fix that? Because to upload these Larry sprites, I had to go into each frame and erase that white stuff, but I'd rather not do that so yeeeeeeah, could someone help a brotha out? :ron:

Are you referring to the white fuzz that appeared on some of your earlier sprites? That's usually caused by having stray pixels in the graphic that are nearly invisible (like, even a 1% opacity dot would become a white spot) in some animation programs. There would definitely be an easier way, so it would help to know your editing method and what program you're using in order to come up with a solution.

That would make sense, because I never check those things.

Ok, so the white lines ONLY appear when I animate with Photoshop CS5. Well...the Objection bubbles were animated in CS4, but everything I made BEFORE the Larry animations were in CS4. Now, I generally try and mimic the animation of the official sprites, then when I save them, the settings are:

-GIF
-Selective
-No Dither

So I don't remember how I saved my gifs on CS4 on my original computer. I'm trying to play around with the "Selective" section, since changing the other options are out of the question.

Hmm... would it be too much trouble to ask if you could screencap your "Save for Web and Devices" screen while in the middle of creating a gif that does that? I suspect the problem is the Matte setting. Change it to "None" (or any option that isn't a colour, I'm working off the top of my head right now).

I didn't even think of changing the Matte setting. I didn't even have anything in that section, from what I thought. I found out how to save it to none, but I still have to fix one more sprite manually since I already saved it and stuff.

Because changing the dither makes the quality worse. And changing the GIF would, well, obviously make it not animated.

Yeah, Matte was set to white. Basically that tells Photoshop that the background the gif will be used on is white so any semi-transparent pixels should be blended with that colour to appear like they actually are semi-transparent (because gif doesn't support partial transparency). Does it work now?

Nearavex wrote:

Most likely because of the brush tool.

@Volty, Perceptual/No Dither/16 Colours should do it decently enough if you're concerned about colours, though it really doesn't matter unless you want to be extremely accurate to the game. In that case I'd recommend using a Custom palette instead of Perceptual.

Hey-o! S'been a while since I updated this here thread, so uh...here I go!

Spoiler:

I used the Objection! font sheet by [insert link here later] to make these. Once again, this is mainly for my Ace Idiot series, since I'm trying to update the look of the more pixelated Objection bubbles. Plus, y'know, it'd look really bad if I had some nice new custom bubbles and was still using the DS quality originals.

Yeeeeeeah I'm original <3

I'm like, completely finished with putting the audio together. The video editing is like, 1/3 of the way there. Then I just gotta have Zen edit the audio and make it sound better. This episode is gonna be the bombest of diggities.

ZVARRUPDATE!!

Added a bunch of new poses for Phoenix. I tend to use the "evidence holding" sprite in Ace Idiot a lot, so I decided to make a few variations to it.

I totally just realized that I didn't fully clean up some of the document sprites. Aw well, It'll be touched up soon, I guess.

I also started to do my extra Larry animations in his other outfits, but got lazy. So here's where I'm at with that right now.

I seriously cannot believe they didn't make a "Normal" sprite for Security Guard Larry. That's hella lame, bro. Also, I guess I gotta clean up one of these sprites, too. Fuckin' hate editing on a laptop...
