The port and engine were coded from scratch.

If anyone still thought SEGA had genuine talent developing games anymore, this should remove all doubt that they don't. Absolutely fantastic stuff.
Does we even do these things anymore?

We have entered the era of overweight game making nerds for phone platforms making tons of cash, like the dot com millionaires of old.

Still funny stuff and worth respect.

(If I hadn't hit the character limit with the topic title already I'd change it to something that doesn't molest the English language. Ah well.)

It relates when you consider that one guy pulled this port off - and this port is about as good as a Sonic CD port will ever get - yet an entire team at SEGA devoted to iPhone ports has to fall back on even partial emulation to get anything done. This is particularly true of Sonic CD which to date is still best played on a Japanese Mega CD emulator, especially when the official port in Sonic Gems Collection had minor graphical bugs.

(My argument would be much more convincing if I had an iPhone and I'd played Sonic Gems Collection so I'm dropping it here. Even so, Sonic CD's one of those games that's gotten mistreated and underappreciated over the years.)

Regardless of anything else, this is impressive coding work. I'd like to see the finished article.

The US version, anyway. It had a completely different soundtrack to the original, and I'm not going to get into that debate done to death here.

what debate

Wasn't clear, sorry. The debate is about which version of the soundtrack was better, usually devolving into a flamewar about why they saw fit to change it in first place. It inevitably comes up every single time people mention Sonic CD because using the Japanese soundtrack in the US appears to still be illegal for some reason and this keeps pissing off the fans. The short version of this ancient debate:

Quote:
"OMG I just heard that the Japanese/Euro version of Sonic CD had a different soundtrack and it's way better than the US one why did they change it"
"Because the JPN version is lame-ass saccharin-sweet techno shit"
"OMFG N00B US version is all cheesy-ass 80s rock that is as interesting as watching tarmac dry how can you say the US soundtrack is better"
"Because it is"
"N00B"
"FAG"

etc.

Common consensus is that the Japanese soundtrack is 100 times better than the US soundtrack, but every time someone brings up the soundtracks this argument springs up again, although it's gradually gotten more polite over time. These days people would simply like the option to choose which version of the soundtrack they hear in-game included, but again, legal trouble.

Also, the soundtrack was changed in the first place because techno music was not yet popular in the US in the early 90s as it was in Europe and Japan, so the rumour goes.

It's not released yet, nor is it even official yet. They're trying to get SEGA to officially adopt it for release though.
