All PW cases (except for the first ones) in PW1 and PW2 are caused because of an incident a few years ago...
Spoiler: 1-2
In 1-2, it was caused by DL6

Spoiler: 1-3
In 1-3, it was caused by Jack Hammer killing an actor

Spoiler: 1-4
In 1-4... DL6 again

Spoiler: 1-5
1-5 it was SL9

Spoiler: 2-2
2-2 was Ini Miney dying in a car crash

Spoiler: 2-3
2-3 was Bat getting his head bitten off.

Spoiler: 2-4
2-4 was Celeste's suicide.

Anyone else notice this?

Always providing motives, the PAST.

Spoiler: In 2-3
Bat didn't get his head bitten off. That would be kinda...FATAL? He's not dead, he's in a coma.

As Darzie said, it's to create a motive. Also for more depth of plot and character. The tie-ins with the past are what create a plot beyond searching for evidence.

Yeah, if you're gonna have a premeditated murder, you need a motive. And PW being a video game, it's gotta be an interesting motive with a complicated backstory.

1-2 didn't happen because of DL-6. White blackmailed Grossberg because of something that happened during DL-6 but that isn't why Mia was killed. Mia was killed because she had information about White blackmailing people and planned on making it public.

SilverZephyr got it more or less on the dot.

Though admittedly, by Justice For All I became slightly annoyed by it. Yes, the level of intrigue it can build is ecstatic and I loved it the first number of times, but it also makes each case become a bit too...samey, for lack of a better term. And it often made the motive more important than it needed to be (not to mention defy alot of logic most of the time) : I understand and welcome the idea of extending a mystery, but surely there must have been another way than using the same scheme all the time. I honestly welcomed 2-1's casual take on motive as a breath of fresh air.

EDIT: :objection:

*Slams desk* But it is the root of the motive. Mia was inspired to take her course as lawyer because of the shame White inflicted upon her mother Misty.

If not for this then Mia would never have gone to the lengths she did to hunt him down!

^ Desk Abuse.
Good point. I guess its a bit of both though. Without DL-6, Mia wouldn't have hunted down White for so long. But the backmail is what forced him to kill her...

I've lost my train of thought and I'm starting to confuse myself.

Well, if we go back that far, we may as well call DL-6 a motive for all the events in all the games. Things would have been a lot different....

Edgeworth wouldn't have lost his father, and would have become a defense attorney, shunning frilly purple outfits.

Mia's mother would not have been publicly shamed and Mia might have been talked into taking over the Kurain legacy. She would have had to wear chest binding.

Seeing as how Edgeworth would have been a defense attorney, Phoenix wouldn't have been all gung-ho about challenging him in court and would have become a graphic designer for a popular video game company.

Thousands of fangirls (and fanboys) would have been trying to obsess over an Edgeworth in a 1950's suit, but failed miserably.
