Quite good, actually. Not quite as good as the real thing (in my opinion), but still delicious. It's pretty easy to find, too--it's available at pretty much any natural foods store, as far as I know.

Actually, some regular grocery stores even stock it. I know the Wal-Mart in my area does, which is pretty sweet, along with soy ice cream :3

Chocolate makes everything delicious. Soy ice cream sounds interesting, but I think I'd prefer a fruit sorbet as an ice cream alternative.

Now, I've cut fried crap and sugar out of my diet for the most part, because I'm tired of being a fatty. No chocolate almond milk and fried tofu for me! I can't enjoy stuff like pizza anymore, because the melted white cheese makes me think of pus and it REALLY grosses me out. However, there is one dairy product that I'll have a little trouble giving up:

Yogurt. I love my sugar-free yogurt. Yogurt is supposedly good for women who want to loose weight, but I think I probably heard that from a yogurt commercial. :|

I've had some truly delicious and truly disgusting tofu dishes. Among the delicious were a chocolate mousse substitute my older sister made with silken tofu--it sounds disgusting, but it's actually really good and tastes like chocolate mousse. Also, my mother found an amazing fried tofu recipe--the tofu ended up with a crispy coating on the outside and creamy deliciousness on the inside--they were like what cheese curds dream of being. *w* They actually kept pretty well, too--they were equally delicious on the second day.

Yeah, it's total bullshit. Sadder still is that in China, it costs three times as much to eat McDonald's as to eat healthy meals with fruits and vegetables, so they reserve fast food only for special occasions. It could be that way here, but most of our farmland is now devoted to corn and soybeans, and it would bankrupt a lot of those farmers to change to a different crop. Americans decided that they'd rather import produce all year round and have lesser quality produce than have very good produce only during the growing season and deal with canned during the winter. I think that makes quite a statement about us. :/

Am I the only one who doesn't think that plain tofu is disgusting? I mean, it's not the most delicious food in the world, but I can keep it down.

And it's not flavorless, either. Or at least, good tofu isn't. Eating something with subtle flavors is like an adventure for the tongue! The flavors aren't blatant, for they much be searched for like buried treasure!

Well soy beans are fine, I'm talking about soy products.......soy milk always makes me have various digestive problems.....

Tofu products taste close enough to the real thing for me....

I must've had pretty bad tofu, then, since it was COMPLETELY flavorless. :/

Fried tofu can be really good, though, and I like it in soups (and CHEDDAR BOWLS NOM NOM NOM).

I'm not vegan/vegetarian but I highly respect those who are.

I probably would have become one a long time ago (I tried once when I was 9, it went for a year before I finally gave in). It's really difficult considering my family (as most Slavic families) live on meat. As well as conditions with how lunch in my school is set up (no lunch program) it's unreasonable for me to try to live on a vegetarian diet at this time. Hopefully when I live on my own I'll be able to convert. I've always preferred vegetarain cuisine, though I'm not too fond of tofu, I still like it. And I absolutely love soy, I don't know why everyone hates it so much.

It's really horrible to think of the things animals have to go through.

Spoiler: If you want to know
First they are seperated from their mothers. The mother cows cry for the calves for days after seperation. The calves are branded, castrated and their horns are burned off-- all without pain killers. They recieve inadequate veterinary care and many die of illness or infection. Many freeze to death or die of heatstroke as well. After that short time spent grazing, they're sent to feedlots and are fattenned for slaughter. The food they recieve will cause chronic digestive pain and sometimes their innards become ulcerated and rupture. The air there is full with chemicals that cause chemical respiratory problems. They are administered drugs with the sole function to keep them barely alive so that a veterinarian will not have to be called. The only goal is to keep the cattle alive until they reach the slaughter house, after all. The stalls are so small the cows cannot even turn around. Then, for those who are sent to be slaughtered: Many cows die on the way there. Others arrive crippled. Those who survive are shot in the head... which does not gaurantee death or even unconciousness. Many cows are, infact, fully concious as they are skinned, and have their throats cut out.

That or they will be sent to dairy farms where they are put into tiny stalls and constantly impregnated. Their calves are taken away from them so that we can recieve the milk originally intended for their children. They're hooked up several times a day to machines that intensively milk them. Due to a combination of genetic manipulation, strong hormones (administered by humans of course) and this milking proccess, cows give 10x more milk than natural. After they've become impregnanted enough so that their bodies are completely worn out they're sent to a slaughter house. Their bodies are too given to make anything other than low-grade ground beef and animal food. The male children are taken to be made into veal and the female children are destined to the same fate as their mother. Mothers can be seen crying and searching for their lost children for a long time after they've been seperated. The natural life span of a cow is 25 years. A dairy cow lasts 4 years.

I don't even want to go into any more detail. These are just cows and I haven't even gone into Veal.

This is to a point Yaragorm addressed earlier about "Why not we just eat them, they're going to go to waste anyways?" or whatever:

If more people eat less beef, farmers will be less pressured into forcing the cows to reproduce. The lower the demand, the less cows there will be. As in, they will release less menthane. That's the ideal. c:

When I eat meat, I eat Free-Range but I still don't think it's enough.

oh god, I bet my english will be horrible when I read over this tommorrow. I'll probably edit this for grammar or something.

I don't care what people eat but the only animal product I wish people would stop eating altogether is foie gras. You can't have a conscience (or even tastebuds I reckon) when you eat that shit.

@pandyra - I never knew that about China O__O you can just imagine how healthy the US and UK would be if McDonalds was expensive .__.

IMO junk food is only good when you're wasted or really upset =P

Nobody's forcing you to not eat it. It's just something to think about the next time you do eat meat. And please stop using the super duper small text. It's annoying.
Also, eating too much red meat can be bad for you. I found this in my "You are What You Eat" book(I highly recommend this book): Basically, it's hard for your body to break it down, it can make your body toxic, acidify your blood, deplete calcium, overwork your kidneys and liver, and destroy the good bacteria in your body and that's not even all. Cow's milk is also hard to digest(especially if it's whole milk): it's high in saturated fats and low in vitamins, not to mention all the hormones, drug residues, and pesticides(the pesticides can cause cancer. Trust me, my sister got cancer because of the pesticides).

While I still do eat red meat (I try not to eat it too much) and drink cow's milk, it just makes me feel a bit guilty about eating it... :[

But God didn't say to treat his creatures cruelly in factory farms now did he?? We're not supposed to kill animals unless it's in the name of God. Also, not everybody believes in God here, so they're not going to take what you have to say as truth.

Yeah, the Bible says a lot of bullshit things. No offense.

Anyway, I went grocery shopping today. Because of this thread, I didn't have the heart to buy any animal products for myself. Tonight for dinner, I sauteed some string beans, tofu, and yellow onion in a honey teriyaki sauce. I liked the taste of the veggies and tofu, but somewhat ironically I didn't care for the taste of the sauce!

Then again the bible also says to kill anyone who works on a Sunday, to kill anyone with long hair, to kill anyone who will not impregnate their brothers wives, to kill anyone who doesn't work and not to touch women when they're on their periods. Take it how you will.

I have a question, do you all prefer cooked vegetables or raw vegetables?

Personally, I can't stand cooked vegetables (unless it's something like a potato where it must be cooked). I adore raw vegetables to no end, tohugh. Does anyone know the health differences of cooked versus raw?

It all depends on the vegetable, for corn I guess I prefer it cooked, same goes for carrots and celery.

Cooking any food usually makes it easier to digest therefore it's healthier, but there is still some talk about how cooking can remove some of the nutrients raw veggies would have, again this probably depends on the kind of vegetable...... :yuusaku:

I love raw vegetables too. I like spinach cooked or raw and of course corn and potatoes cooked. I absolutely hate cooked carrots. The mushy texture makes my skin crawl (not as much as beans and peas though...ugh). I like my broccoli either way too. But I only like it cooked when my school makes me my stir fry. I put in broccoli and carrots and whatnot and it's cooked just the way I like it: has some flavor from the sauce, but not too mushy :D

I don't think there's a difference, just don't overcook your veggies. Doing that removes all the nutrients so there's really no point to eating them!! Vegetables should only be steamed for about a couple of minutes.

You might be the first person who shares my views on cooked carrots. I can't stand them JUST for the texture it's just so ugh.

I think Raw would be better for nutrients, but would you get a higher chance of catching an illness from eating it?

The thing about cooked veggies is that they're often overcooked.

I prefer raw as a rule--I particularly love munching on carrots or celery, and spinach, when raw, is an AMAZING salad green. (Though I could just be saying that because my mom makes an amazingly tasty spinach salad. She'll make a HUGE bowl of it and we'll just have it for dinner.) And BROCCOLI. Oh my God. I love raw broccoli (though steamed broccoli can be really good too, if it's not overcooked).

There are some that I only like cooked, though. I realize that technically, mushrooms are fungi and not plants (luls, taking biology this year), but I really only like 'em when they're cooked. Especially on (veggie, in my case) burgers! Nom-nom-nom~

I do recall reading that raw vegetables have more nutrients than cooked ones, but I'm not sure about how easy it is to catch a disease from raw veggies. I'd think they'd be fine if you washed 'em off thoroughly.

Like it has been previously stated, which veggies I like depend on the ones in question.

I love a salad with raw spinich in it. I find that cooked spinach seems to remove some of the taste. I prefer broccoli when it is raw as well.

Potatoes and carrots are ususally the only things I like cooked.

When I eat cooked spinach, I like to add soy sauce, garlic, green onion, sesame oil, and sesame seeds to it. It's really good with rice.

Does anybody like seaweed?? I love it!! Well, I don't like seaweed by itself, but I like to add some sesame oil on it and wrap some rice in it. I also like seaweed soup, kimbap, and sushi, as well as having it in miso soup. Mmmm so hungry!!

This is moot for those of us who don't believe in god.

^ Lol, this. But I still love meat.

I'm not vegetarian by any means (I love meat too much.) but I'm really not a fan of cooked vegetables. If I'm gonna eat them, it's got to be raw. Especially carrots, they taste so gross when cooked!! Plus, cooking vegetables diminishes their nutritional value so it's better nutritionally not to cook them anyway. (Although I think it depends on how you cook them too. For example, steaming them isn't supposed to be as bad.)

The only reason I like cooked vegetables is because otherwise, they can be pretty hard to chew. Although some raw spinach can taste pretty good every once in a while...

Yeah cooked carrots=barfo kekeke. If you cook the vegetables for too long then they lose their nutritional value, which a lot of people do make vegetables that way, so basically you're just wasting your time eating something that's not even good for you anymore!! Steaming them for a couple of minutes is much better :edgy:

I like cooked carrots and stuff.

My grandma over boils cauliflower and sprouts etc. and you dont even have to bite them, they just squish XD

Of course they've lost all their nutrients but I don't care, not everyone eats vegetables for the health benefits, I like the taste xP

Steamed spinach is fucking rank though.

FUCK. Anna you're making me soo hungry. I love raw spinach~

So clearly, we who enjoy everything raw are more healthy?

What about peppers? I like peppers when they're cooked for a little bit with lemon, but otherwise I don't.

I really only cook vegetables for soup, pasta, and pizza.

And cooked spinach is good for all three.

(Although, yes, raw spinach is better.)

When I was little I wouldn't eat spinach because I thought it'd make me look like Popeye ;__;

I had it steamed a few months ago, steamed it for less than a minute and it was just so gross and soggy and blargh. It was much nicer raw.

Oh and random but I hate celery, cooked or raw.

Next month will be a year since I went veggie, I might celebrate by having a steak :gant: *joke*

Oh and the main thing that annoys me about buying food is when the "suitable for vegetarians" symbol is too fucking small or hidden. Luckily most places have a big green "V" on it.

AND does anyone know if Jelly Belly Jelly Beans are suitable for vegetarians? Some sites say yes and some say no but I don't know what the ingredients are...

Jelly Belly claims to have no animal products or even animal derived products like gelatin. However, they are not for vegans because the mixture that it's coated in contains beeswax.....
