This thread is about Umineko no naku koro ni. I have not read the VN but have read some discussions about it prior to the airing of the anime.

Quote:
: Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place in the year 1986, during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a secluded island named Rokkenjima (六軒島, Rokkenjima). The head of a wealthy family named Kinzo Ushiromiya, who lives on and owns Rokkenjima, is near death, and eight of his family members arrive on the island to discuss how Kinzo's assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are three family members who live there, five of Kinzo's servants, and his personal physician. After the eight family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island and shortly after people start to get mysteriously murdered.

It's kind of like Higurashi, in which it includes Bernkastel and Lambdadelta in which they're involved in the "game". But it's not like Higurashi in terms of being a "Clue" like murder mystery in which Battler tries to find out who did the murders and how they were done. It also adds to the fact that the viewer can try to figure it out as well. So I'd like to ask those of you who played the VN to try not to post any spoilers.

Also title is a dumb pun. The real translation is "When the Seagulls cry" but if you separate Umi and Neko it becomes "Sea cat". If you haven't figured this out before this post then I don't know if you should actually watch this.

Yeah, this has been turning out into a great series! I keep wondering what's next and who's going to get murdered next. The last episode ended in a real nice cliff hanger though!

I don't know, the anime is doing a kind of meh job so far.

Also, it's missing things that don't work in animated form, like the Red Text of Truth.

I'm think it's pretty good on it's own if you haven't read the VN.(Like me) I'm also sure that it probably cut out a lot. Adaptable or not.

Even so, I'll try to hang on to this show even though I was unsuccessful with Higurashi kai.

I'm really enjoying the series thus far. I don't have a clue as to what happens, seeing as I haven't played the Visual novel it was based off of, but I regard Higurashi as the best Animé I've ever watched.
I'm expected similar mindfuckery from this series too, although I'm hoping it isn't too similar to Higurashi
Spoiler: Umineko
I mean, it already has arcs where people come back to life afterwards (I think) and I've heard there's an answer series, in the same vein as Kai

Incidentally, if anyone can link me to English version of the Higurashi Visual Novels, that'd be great.

I have never even see the VN for this or Higurashi, unfortunately. I didn't really like the 2nd half of the most recent episode though. It just seemed a little...annoying.

I would watch this, and Higurashi, but I'm afraid of whether I'll be able to stomach some of the gore.

As for the Higurashi VNs, I think a small group of translators picked it up, forcing the people who were previously doing so to stop. It should still be good quality when it is released. And as far as I know, someone is translating Umineko, but I don't know who or where to find it.

Higurashi isn't really about "hurf durf moar gore makes it hardcore". It's a mystery horror show, if you like mystery you should like this show.

The gore isn't that bad in Umineko since it's censored. If you get the TV version of Higurashi the bad bits of the gore will also be censored.

This is what I think of the last episode...

Spoiler:

(I wonder for how many people this joke went over their heads)

I've been loving the previews for the next episodes like mad.

From what I gather, there seem to be several arcs. The first was the murder in the mansion, and this next one seems to be backstory? Unfortunately, this next arc seems kind of boring. : /

Ah man, I really loved Higurashi - very intense, and I thought the blood/gore was intelligently used, rather than gore for the sake of gore. Plus, the animators and VA's did a great job of adding suspense and the mystery of the unknown.

I'm seeing these factors in Umineko but for some reason I feel like I can't get into it as well. It doesn't have the same aire of "OMG!!" as Higuarshi did. Could be because I'm not a fan of the characters too much. I mean, Battler's pretty cool and all, but still.

I was kind of hoping the series would run a straight 24-26 as opposed to having several little arcs. Oh well!

It's done in the style of the VN, in like 4 episodes I think.

1-5 was the first episode.

I just wanna say
that Battler's 'turning the chest board over' is the lamest solution ever.
It's worse than thinking outside the box.

But besides that, I love it so far, especially the opening, the third is the best so far.

Actually, I kind of like the phrase. It's actually kind of catchy. The last episode (not this one that just came out), was twisted enough for my taste.

I think you're referring to Sonozaki Futago-tachi? MangaGamer picked up the Higurashi VNs right after they finished translating Onikakushi-hen, then MG asked them to stop their translation project. However, a closer look at 07th Expansion's (the creators of Higurashi) website made it clear that the license rights weren't exclusive and that as long as Sonozaki Futago-tachi's translation remained a fan project, they could continue with their patches.

Long story short, the people who were previously doing so are still translating, plus we've got a company translating it faster as well.

As for the Umineko translation, it's called The Witch Hunt and you can find it through a quick Google search xD.

In any case... The When They Cry series is my all-time favorite; I love both Umineko and Higurashi and I'd rather not choose between them so I just count them as one series. I've seen some Higurashi fans who say that Umineko surpasses Higurashi in every way, shape and form, and I've seen others who don't like it as much. It's really all a matter of taste.

...Although it IS kind of unfair. Most people who've played the visual novels consider the anime adaptation of Higurashi to be better than how Umineko is being adapted (in terms of story, anyway), so people who are fans based solely off of the anime might feel differently about the quality of Umineko than fans who have played the VNs.

Personally, I've only seen the Umineko and Higurashi animes, but I enjoy them both. I think that Umineko was pretty well done (thus far) the animation is nice, and personally, I like the anime's style more than that of the original VN, but I guess it's just a matter of taste.

I'm loving Umineko so far. *-*
I read through all of the EPs that were translated and I was blown away by the amount of mindrape in the series. xD
The anime's been doing a good job so far, but...
Spoiler:
Why was the adults' discussion about the epitaph in episode 15 (I think) cut out? It's a pretty important scene IMO. @_@

I also watched Higurashi and I loved it, too, although I've never read the novels. I wouldn't say it's better than Umineko but it was more memorable for me. Probably because of the intense psychological drama in the series, which produced some sort of strong impact in me. I remember that almost every episode I watched made me look like this: :beef:
I'm enjoying Rei so far. I didn't watch episode 5 yet, but I liked everything I've seen. Especially Saikoroshi-hen (that's the name of that arc from episodes 2-4, right? xD).

By the way, a patch for Umineko EP.5 was realeased recently which translates the prologue. You can find it here: http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=2686544#post2686544
It's a nice warm-up for those who can't read japanese (like me! \o).

Spoiler: hey...
I think you guys should put that in a spoiler tag. If you think about it, Lambda > Young Takano can be considered a huge spoiler for Higurashi, if you think about Lambda's relation with Bern.

Rika and Frederica are NOT The same people, they have both come out and said it, so I think the same goes for Lambda.

Anyway, did anyone else love the last scene with Lambda and Bernkastel eating candy together?

I liked it quite a bit myself. It really builds up the tension nicely.

Ah, yes, the anime has ended already. Honestly, I recomend everyone to read the novel. It makes a lot more sense. You can't make an Umineko anime with only 26 episodes. =P
Anyway, I still have to watch the last episode.
Spoiler: Episodes 25 and 26
I hope that epic red. vs blue battle was at least well adapted. I heard that I lot of red truths were cut, specially the ones regarding Battler's sin.

Anyway, the English patch for EP5 was released this week: http://www.witch-hunt.com/news.html
Also, EP6 is being released today. \o\

And I'll have to wait another semester for a patch. ;_;

After watching up to episode 23 of the anime, I had a feeling many things were missing. I decided to read the VN on youtube, and I was right. After the anime finished, I was a bit confused. I'm on part 2 of 6 of the VN, and I am enjoying it much more than the show.
Don't mind me, just passing through.
