Who's excited? I'm excited!

Say what you want about Disney's past record for butchering classic fairy tales and relying on the same storytelling formula, but there's a reason why they're so popular. They're entertaining! And they have great filmmaking. So I for one am excited for The Princess and the Frog.

Granted, I'm not too enthused that Disney is going the Princess story route again, but it's been such a long time since Disney's come out with a new traditionally animated film. They were planning to shut down traditional animation for good since Home on the Range bombed (not that I've seen Home on the Range, but I did hear it was preeeetty bad.), and their reason was they said people weren't interested in 2D anymore. Redonkulous. CGI movies coming out at the time were more popular because of their stories, not their animation.

I'm hoping PoTF is a success, because I have a raging femboner for animated musicals. So far from what I've seen, the visuals look great, the music sounds good, and at least the main character Tiana is not your typical cookie cutter kind of girl.

Not to mention motherfuckin' KEITH DAVID is voicing the villain :D

There's just something magical, a certain beauty and quality about hand-drawn animation that you can't get from CGI films.

So we've got a little over a month to go until the film officially comes out, but hell with it, DISCUSS!

Yeah, I'm hoping that it will be a throwback to Disney's good 2D musicals. Little Mermaid, Lion King, Pinnochio, ect. they were classic.

But, yeah, just hoping. I'll wait until reviews are out before I consider seeing it.

FINALLY. It's about time they came out with a traditionally animated film again! :D And what's even better is that it's from the same director as Aladdin and The Little Mermaid (I think).

Thanks for finally listening to the fans, Disney :)

I'm excited about this movie. Particularly since Pixar's creative mastermind is kicking Disney back on its feet.

The one thing I'm concerned about however, isn't the direction Disney is going, (for pete's sake this was long over due), but more the source material, the Frog Prince. It's a nice fairy tale... but it's short, and at base, doesn't have half the elements I've come to associate with classic Disney movies. No Villain (That you meet at least), a cast of three characters, no adventure. It looks like Disney knows this, and aside from the fact that there are princesses and amphibians being canoodled, there isn't any connection between the original story and the Movie... Thank-goodness for creative liberties.

For some reason, after seeing the poster for it, I feel as if there is going to be a lot of political correctness in it.

I mean come on, there's only about one or two white characters on the poster.

Also, the villain couldn't look more stereotypically evil if he TRIED.

@Wooster

Disney has stated that their movie is loosely based on a novel called "The Frog Princess" by E.D. Baker where the main female character also turns into a frog after kissing the frog prince.

Truth be told, I never really liked any of those original 2D animation fairy tale movies by Disney... :yuusaku:

But that's because when I was little, all my friends would blast most of them for being too girly and I never really cared to watch them since.

Although if they're as good as everyone says, maybe I'll go watch them and this movie sometime soon...

It was just peer pressure, I actually saw Beauty and the Beast last year and it was pretty entertaining.

I've also seen Mulan and Hercules but that's about it.

I liked Disney's 2D Movies mostly because of the animation. It's just AWESOME. Admit it. Even if the stories are Bowdlerised and made kid-friendly (I'm looking at you, "Hunchback of Notre Dame"), you can still go ahead and watch the entire thing because the animation is just breathtaking. Bonus points if the music is really good, too. But for me, it's really the animation that draws me to the movie. I grew up watching secondhand VHS tapes of Disney animated movies because we couldn't afford to go to the cinemas back then (and none of my friends called me sissy because of that, BTW). Every time I watched those movies I was fascinated with the drawings, the backgrounds, etc. In fact that's one of the factors that led into my becoming an artist.

Still don't think their animation's good?

Compare
with
Dingo
Pictures.

So yeah. I figure I'll watch it anyway, even if I don't dig the story. I saw the trailer a couple of months ago and saw the really nice animation.

I'm.... a bit confused by this. If all your friends were against Disney animated movies, why would they have Lion King?

I saw Lion King when I had different friends...a few years later.

And the first set of friends only hated the fairy tales.

Hunchback is kid friendly!? That movie scared me so badly when it came out that I made my family leave the theater.

The part with them burning down that family's house to be specific. I didn't end up watching the whole thing until I was much older.

He's probably saying in comparison to the novel by Hugo (last name I can't remember). I myself have never read it, but I would imagine that Disney did tone down the story a bit (although it is pretty dark for a Disney movie, with all the fire, death, and lechery).

I'm glad Disney is going to squeeze one last drop of traditional animation, I LOVED Disney movies when I was a kid. I still love Aladdin to this day, I think that this is going to be pretty good.

Like neoswordmaster said, I'm talking about the book in comparison to the film. If you've read the original "Hunchback of Notre Dame" by Victor Hugo, you'd think the Disney version was as light as Barney. The Disney version didn't even include the super-dark parts like

Spoiler:
That jerk Phoebus leaving Esmeralda to burn at the stake; or
when at the end, all that's left is two skeletons-- the skeleton of Quasimodo holding that of Esmeralda.

Wait, so was Meet the Robinsons actually good? I never went out of the way to go see it myself because I'm so skeptical of 3-D Disney movies that aren't done by Pixar.

If you asked me, it's only "passable". I didn't like the animation-- it was too bright even for something with "Meet the Robinsons" mood; the story is OK but weak in many aspects; I'd say the best part of it was the ending and I'll rate it 7.5. Better than "Chicken Little", at least. Now THAT had a really stupid storyline.

Which is why I firmly believe Disney should just stick to 2D and let Pixar do all the 3D work. Pixar's much better at it, anyway.

I'm getting really hyped up about this movie, mostly because I obsess over animation quality. I'm reaaaally hoping for new songs. As much as I love the soundtracks for most of the new disney movies, I want something that I can sing to~
Oh, and if you go to Disneyland around this time, they'll give you free tickets to see the movie in theaters :D You just need to enter the activation code they give you online and print them out.

Sadly I've listened to most of the new songs already. And they all sound great!
In both Disneyland and Disney World, they just opened "Tiana's Showboat Jubilee". It's a musical production featuring the characters and music from the movie.
Here's the whole thing if you're interested, unless you don't want to hear any of the songs until the movie comes out.

I hope it turns out well....I'm probably too old to watch it but I grew up in the Disney Princess era so I guess this old Disney tradition holds a place in my heart.

I'm more bothered about the amount of controversy people have with this film complaining about the fact I think Tiana was a slave originally....which was historically accurate! Rags to riches stories work for me but bah I'm hoping political correctness doesn't ruin this. :yuusaku:

I agree, Maddy sounds better, they also complained I think that the love interest looked Middle-eastern and said this implied Disney thought a black princess and a white man couldn't be together.

:pft: Idiots but yeah I think he looks middle-eastern enough and Disney will make it work anyway.

Funny, it was also implied that a black princess and a black man couldn't be together, since the prince didn't look "black enough".

As for the name, I guess "Maddy" sounded racist because it sounded similar to "Mammy"

Mammy is racist?
It's standard scottish slang for mother in my books.
Sure maybe its a little scottish racism but it's completely irrelevant in the context of the Princess and the Frog.
