Well, the system is a little bit different. I think the mob are the witnesses in PLvAA and there is no real judge, or am I wrong?
I think the relative position of the cage in the castle court rooom and the witness stand in the regular court room is most likely the same.

I personally prefer this way they're doing it now.
It's was bit confusing when I played for first time really.
My guess is that it was other way around in previous games because of the following reasons;
1. in the pic of the courtroom the aid is then on behind the defense attorney, which make more sense
2. For that reason also, the attorney is at the end of the bench, while aid is near the...section(?) If it was other way around,
it could have created a problem where they also needed to make the aid appear a bit on the Nicks poses.
Just my five cents though.

Also, on Neni's point of Yellow Girl being a sibling of Trucy, I honestly she was Trucy. I noticed the badge, and said "Maybe Phoenix and his daughter took the bar exam together?" Would be fun if it was Trucy, and you could play a case as her being the main Attorney.

That's why they were on the side they were in the pre3DS era. But I believe players got confused when the aid was facing the same direction as the prosecution.

Could just be the angle. But if polygon count is a problem, they could use 2D sprites (see: latest Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, where the entire audience is made of sprites).
There are audience members in the foreground though (in shadow). Unless those are the jurists.

Would be quite funny. Also, when the camera is pointed like in the first screenshot, I hope it slowly pans sideways.

I don't see them dropping this 'policy'. But there's a huge 5 in the title. Phoenix can give really brief basic explanations of who they are when the evidence is examined. Then he can think more meaningful things about them rather than stupid miss-able Easter Eggs even without them appearing. See, that wasn't so hard? I completly agree and that's another reason I dislike the AAI writing team for how they handled these things in AAI 1&2: That's just not good writing! It's a visual NOVEL so they are supposed to know the basics about how to write a NOVEL but they often prove themselves to fail quite a bit at this very thing, saddly.
That's why I'm looking more forward to PL VS AA currently than GS5, despite not being a huge Layton Fan. That game has Takumi on board. That guy *knows* what he doing.
But well, I'm still hopeful that at very least the AJ cast will play an active role. I can't quote, because I saw it on Tumblr (Though I am sure they got their info from here, anyway), but Eshiro said that GS5 is meant to be a continuation of GS4's plot in a way and that Phoenix retook the bar mainly to "fulfill" a promise he made. I know, this could be something that happened off-screen, but I kinda hope that this is connected to the promise he made to Thalassa at the end of AJ, the promise to make sure her children would be safe. That would mean that Trucy and Apollo do, in fact, play an active role. This way, the game would make both, the PW and AJ fans happy.
But I don't know if I should have that much trust in the AAI writing team...

I was thinking that she looks like Lynne too actually.
I cant imagine GS5 being FULLY voiced but maybe it will have more voices than previous games, maybe Nick doing his monologues or intro, the judge saying "Objection Sustained" or something.

1. Trucy has brunette hair. Not orange hair. Sure, she could have dye her hair but.. yeah.

Yeah they have different face shapes, Trucy's is rounder. The hair would never bother me because... extensions and dye. Some girls change their hair more frequently than their knickers.
