"I think at this point those two mysteries are 'solved' enough that I can answer any questions you might have," Verrier said. "You can imagine I'd normally rather keep quiet, but the stakes are different now."

“I wouldn’t say it particularly matters.” Agnes nodded. “Unless we suggest something like...”

”Grandfather, after escaping the study, went on to murder Julia in the Wine Cellar. Where he ended up dying, and therefore was not hiding inside. We all didn’t see him.”

"The offer to interrogate me still stands," Verrier said politely. "I didn't help master Albrecht escape the study until after we found Julia and Harley's bodies. So long as the tape was placed before those murders, I do not think it's possible he was responsible for them at least."

"Maybe Mr. Albrecht blacked out when he went down from the window and that's why he appeared here at first..."

Julia had instinctively clutched her stomach at the many mentions of her being eviscerated.
"Um... well, maybe I should tell you how I saw things from my perspective, then! It may not be very reliable as was previously mentioned but..." She closed her eyes and cleared her throat.

"It was quite late and I was having trouble sleeping so I decided to go organise the bottles in the cellar... then I heard the floor creak behind me b-but when I turned around there was nobody! When I turned back to the shelves I saw the Gideon apparition everyone else saw and, well... Oh my, I don't think this is very helpful..."
Julia sighed.

"It's really nothing all that complicated. When he first went missing, I really had no idea where he was. I found him in the study just like everyone else, and saw that he'd had a heart attack. I feared the worst, but as I examined him, he winked. He wanted me to play along, I assume, and tell you all that he was dead, so I did," Verrier explained.

"Of course, he had still suffered a heart attack. He would have died if I didn't get a chance to treat him. Some time later, a little after the first murders, I checked up on him. I found tape on the door, which meant that I couldn't get inside to treat him without making it clear to Ingrid that he was actually alive. I thought it might be worth the risk, but master Albrecht was very insistent about wanting to maintain the illusion that he'd died... We could talk through the door at least, with no-one listening in. I realised the only option would be to get him out of the room and somewhere safe. That's when I came up with the plan to use some fishing twine for the window lock, and some mattresses to cushion his fall as he escaped out of the window.

"I took master Albrecht to the shed by the pond, so I could give him the treatment he needed to stay alive. I later wanted to check on him, which is why I split off from the group after the other murders." That would explain the 'scene' where Gideon had apparently tried to drown him at the pond, then. Though if Gideon himself couldn't have pushed his head underwater, then...

Verrier blinked in surprise at this. "That's a weight off my shoulders! Truthfully I was worried he might have gone off the rails. I'm not even entirely sure what he was up to all this time."

Fritz glanced up, having forgotten that scene happened until just now.

"Oh yeah, speaking of which, what was the deal with that scene by the pond?" Fritz asked, "I remember Gideon saying you tricked someone into thinking they had a terminal illness. Is that true? Was that person Pops?"

"Let's fucking end this. Let me have my revenge from earlier," Edelfäule cracks her long knuckles, sitting up after coming up with another genius idea.

She motions for the others to back off, "Julia locked the cellar door herself. Ingrid permitted someone to enter the cellar and kill Julia after she unwrapped the key. How does your shame taste?"

"If all car doors and the trunk door are locked... And if the windows are impossible to close from outside... No way the killer left via the car hood because of the engine in there..." Harley thinks for a moment before he looks towards Gideon.

"Actually, I don't think we talked about what kind of car the Mercedes Benz was.... I've seen convertible cars and I've seen non-convertible cars in my workforce... It'd be great if you can clarify what kind of car your Mercedes Benz is, Gideon."

Verrier started to look uncomfortable now. "Well... firstly that scene didn't really happen, at least like that. Whoever wrote that Ghost Fables book must have... I don't know, heard about my past, or read my thoughts and feelings, or... It's not really scientific, but I don't have any other explanation."

He took a deep breath before continuing. "Either way though, yes. It's true. I had hoped to destabilise Gideon, make it easier to reclaim the headship. I didn't expect him to react quite so... strongly, though. You see, I am one of the world's leading experts in a terminal illness known as 'Brandauer's'. As you can probably tell from the name, it's hereditary in this family. Gideon was always paranoid, it was a simple matter to feed into his paranoia and convince him he had the disease. I didn't even need to tell him he had it: it was enough to be truthful and explain his version was asymptomatic. He would self-destruct by himself, coming up with elaborate conspiracies that better fit the 'story' he viewed the world by, rather than believing I would ever tell him the full truth.

"At the time I told myself I was simply doing my job. Now, though... Well, I can never take it back. After he convinced himself he was going to die within the next few years, he suddenly took to travelling the world, as you're all aware. And then... he died. If it was suicide, well... I know that I'll only have myself to blame. Some 'doctor' I am, huh?"

"So it was you... You were the reason my Giddy left me." Edna shot Verrier a glare, looking genuinely furious. "You tricked him into thinking his days were numbered. You could have even been the catalyst for what transpired today. I spent so much time in Geistfabel, just for the day he would come back... only for him to be taken away just as we reunited. And now, I finally find that the reason that he even went on his journey was because of your lies and deceit..." Her hands curled up into two fists, shaking with raw anger. It was clear she could barely contain her emotions right now. "Perhaps the scene in the book should have been what happened. It would have been a fitting punishment for your sins, Doctor." She spat out bitterly.

"This is the same man who blackmailed master Albrecht to steal the headship from him. At the time I felt justified, that Gideon would only be getting what he deserved. Now, though, there are times where I agree with you," Verrier said hollowly.

"You know, Albrecht is the only reason I'm even a doctor now, even if I am a sham of one. He found me in a German orphanage, paid for my education, gave my life a purpose. 15 years old and it was the first time since my family died that I felt I had a place to belong. It is no exaggeration to say I owe everything I am to him: no-one else had been interested in adopting the strange little French boy. Without him I'd have soon been kicked out of the orphanage, left to do... I'm not sure, petty crime I imagine. I did always have a knack for conning people.

"The headship rightfully should have gone to master Albrecht. I did what I could to help set things right, for his sake. Did I do good, or did I do bad? I don't know. I can only live how I know to."

Lynde cackled.

" We all read the book. What Gideon did for that Nazi Filth is mercy to the point of weakness. You think anything would await that animal of yours beside the rope if anyone but Gideon had found that out?! The only thing Gideon stole that day was Justice for an animal. It is not surprising that a lickspittle footstool like yourself stole our future with Gideon. Dr. Armweak." Lynde spat out literally and figuratively, emulating the derision of Edelfäule.

Lynde cackled again.

"Of course Doctor! the new generation are the only ones who believe that the Nazi high command were war criminals! The Nuremburg Trials were filled with Newborns! As for Heinrich, his sympathy towards flies runs deep as he helped to give them millions of human corpses to feed upon.

Perhaps being from the East, and having Jewish ancestry biases me, as well as of course being young. You are right. But at least I'm not a footstool who faked real medical research. "

Lynde then turned to Edelfäule, as though finished with the conversation with Verrier and asked "Are those good? May I have one?"

Surprisingly, Gideon seemed to relax. "Truthfully... I didn't know about the bunkers back when I confronted you and father. And I don't think I would've cared. In the end, I only wanted to be head. And I suppose I got my divine punishment for my greed."

His face seemed serious and melancholic, a stark contrast from the rest of this trial. "I always liked you, Uncle. Maybe that's why I was so angry you hurt me. But in the end, the only way we can escape the choices we've made is to die. And then it's the living who have to pay the price."

"I supposed I deserved that one," Verrier commented after Lynde's outburst. "To my knowledge Albrecht didn't especially sympathise with Nazi ideology, he was moreso in it for the whole 'world domination' part. Saying it out loud though, that does still sound bad. I don't expect anyone to understand where I'm coming from when I say that I owe him an unrepayable debt, especially if I'm not even really in the right in my actions. Perhaps we had better leave it at that."

Gideon's words seemed to reassure Heinrich but a lot of sadness clearly remained in him, "Really? You managed to dig up my past but not find the bunkers? I must've hidden those people better than I thought, " Heinrich let out an empty laugh, "You really shouldn't have looked up to me though. I may even be the most hyprocritical member of this family. You see, I've always tried to be selfless but I've never been so. After all, I joined the National Socialists to save my own skin. I wasn't there for my grandson when he needed it. I hid that bunker from everyone just so I could avoid talking about my past. And then there's what I did to you... I won't say what I did. That's something you want the others to solve right? But since you know about my condition, it must be obvious why it had to be done. Listen, I bear you no ill will for taking the headship from me. In fact, I'm happy you did it as that role was something that I didn't deserve but my condition, whilst obvious, was something that I wanted to keep with me till the end."

"...I believe that is enough for the moment. We should return to the matter at hand," Raphael declared. "There will be plenty of time for self-pity afterwards. Trust me, I'm quite the expert.

"Now then, I believe Julia's murder was next..."

JesusMonroe wrote:

"I already commented on this, but allow me to remove all ambiguity--Julia died instantly. 'Instantly' means she could not influence her surroundings or take any action after being dealt the killing blow."

Raphael's head shook underneath the cloak. "Perhaps we are actually quite fortunate you became a novelist. I can only shudder to image how much damage you could have wreaked had you been a politician. The issue, which you seem to be quite insist on avoiding, whether because you are purposefully being coy or because you are so wrapped up in this melodramatic fantasy of yours, is timing. Julia may have died instantly, but the issue is when. As things stand, there are no issues if Julia simply locked the wine cellar herself and was murdered after Ingrid and the others left. ...It would admittedly be quite a peculiar situation, but entirely possible. Maybe Julia got some animal entrails on her apron while cooking, and then fainted in shock after accidentally knocking a bunch of wine bottles over, or was simply playing some sort of prank. And a pronouncement of death from Verrier is worth about as much as your show after that last season finale.

"...Perhaps Julia was truly, obviously, and unequivocally dead when she was discovered, but in that case it's just a shame this," he tapped the cover of his copy of Ghost Fables, "wasn't penned by a writer with stronger prose."

"You can consider that my revenge then. Not like I was treated with the same dignity."

"I gotta admit, Raphy. I never thought you had it in you. Maybe you and your friend were even closer than we thought? Is it too late to retcon that in the story?" Gideon laughed, seeming to return to his usual self. "Still, I suppose we can't keep this dance going going forever. I acknowledge your theory."

"It's shameful to admit, but I didn't examine Julia or Harley all that closely," Verrier admitted, glad for the topic change. "At the time I was worried it might have been part of Albrecht's plan, so I didn't want to ruin anything. My accounts for later bodies were the truth, though. Gideon, can I get that in red? Naturally no-one would have reason to believe me otherwise.

"This new theory for Julia is... surprising though, to say the least. Was there not already a knife in her when Ingrid first opened the cellar door alongside the others? What could Julia have possibly thinking to set up a prank like that?"

“Fine. Verrier’s examinations of Mia and Erik were accurate. I can be known to be generous.”

"You better not be planning to pull this fake death twist a third- or maybe it'd be the fourth- time, Gideon." Ingrid spoke up. "Would be embarrassing to find out two years without me to solve your cases made you dull..."

"Julia did conspire to cover up the fact that a man had been living under the manor for years. Just a few days ago I might've considered her above this, but I guess she's a real part of this family after all."

"Hey, if it's alright with everyone... I'd like to share how I died, though I don't know how helpful it'll be... I know you guys are still figuring out Julia's death..." Harley said as he cross his arms.

"Anyhow... About my death... It all started when I went into the Mercedes-Benz and drove out of the garage. I thought that if I can get to the other side of the island, I could escape Gideon and he won't be able to catch me... It jus so happened that I looked in the rearview mirror, and saw Gideon, or rather my killer, sitting in the seat behind me. He said that he loved how much I break his toys when we were growing up. He thought that he'd take a page out of my book. He covered my mouth so I can't scream and then plunges a knife into my stomach." The mechanic explained with a pained look on his face, recalling his own death.

"And that's all I can remember of my death, so... I don't know how much useful it'll be to help you guys figure out my murder." He added on.

"You get 'em," Angelo mocked from the corner of the room, being entirely unhelpful.

"Anyways, if Raphael's theory is right, what does that mean? No one was hiding in the wine cellar, right? And no one stayed behind?"

"I'm glad you brought it up, Angelo. No, no one stayed behind... Except for you, who were always at the guesthouse." Ingrid elucidated. "Aside from that, 'Raphael' broke away from the group and disappeared shortly after we discovered Julia. And of course, Erik mysteriously went to the guesthouse before dying. Any of you three had ample opportunity to eviscerate Julia."

"Oh, dear," Angelo said, bringing a hand to his mouth. "I'm afraid it wasn't me, though. But I suppose the other two may have been able to do what you suggest."

"Actually, I don't think we talked about what kind of car the Mercedes Benz was.... I've seen convertible cars and I've seen non-convertible cars in my workforce... It'd be great if you can clarify what kind of car your Mercedes Benz is, Gideon."

“Ah my mistake”, Gideon said as he had fallen asleep shortly after this was originally posted. “It’s not a convertible, and not different from any basic car aside from Gideon’s modification. It’s manual, not automatic.

“Say what you want about my show,” Fritz muttered, “At least I never used the same solution twice.”

“Anyway, I guess we’ve still got more to figure out here. Let’s start with what Ingrid saw when she opened the wine cellar. The blood Ingrid saw on Julia was actually wine. Or maybe Julia deliberately faked her death before Ingrid entered the wine cellar. Another option is that the corpse Ingrid found in the wine cellar was made of some synthetic material. Last but not least, everyone in the wine cellar was on drugs.

"I see you all are new to Gideon's depravity. He would wear out the same tricks on us forever if he had the choice. He's a the lowest form of artist and takes no pride in his work. To dignify him as an author is to undermine the work of an entire history of people with the capability to dream up true emotional works," Edelfäule gags, at least partially due to her own disgust and not just the rot.

She clears herself in the usual manner and brushes her hair out of her face. "Anyway, soon the shame will destroy this whelp and I will be the one to force him to swallow it. Next theory. The momentum of the car stopping was enough to stab Harley on a knife which was in the car beforehand. The killer is considered to have killed Harley by placing the knife and cutting the brake line."
