Say after the real killer is uncovered and the guilty verdict is read, the killer could lose it and grabs the murder weapon and then attempts to kill himself/the client etc or if the client, enraged at the killer, grabs the weapon with the intention to kill the killer. You will have to present him with something that would persuade him/her to calm down and not go through with it. If successful further tragedy would be avoided. If not, you get a bad ending to the case.

A little dark but I like it, To make it darker it could a shelly de killer thing where the muderer say that He will get another hitman to kill Apollo (YAY)

Case 1: Turnabout hatred, originates years before PW1, it's the father of Phoenix, Phoenix wright Snr., an old rivalry that has gone on for years has resolved in murder.
Case 2: the missing turnabout: a young girl goes missing while on her holiday, at the same month Phoenix has passed his bar exam and became a lawyer again, he is on the case to convict a man innocent and find what it really means to be a lawyer
Case 3: The Countdown of turnabouts: Phoenix defends a man who is a spirit medium who claims to know Maya, When Phoenix defends him and finds him innocent, he starts to go on a search for Maya, he starts his search at the end of the level.
Case 4: The final turnabout: Phoenix is still on a search for Maya, in his search he is called to defend a woman, he see's her and feels like he's met her before, the trail starts and Edgeworth is still a prosecutor and is prosecuting, when the trial seem's at it's worst point, Mia appears and admit's that it's Maya who's the defendant, Pearl has also called for Phoenix's father and the all win the case with one final OBJECTION!! Everyone is reunited and Phoenix/Maya get Married. (All's well that ends well! Yeah..... I support Phoenix/Maya)

Case 2: In a bizzare and cruel twist of fate, Maya Fey is finally murdered at the hands of none other then Morgan Fey herself, finally out of prison. However, he will be defending Pearl, who Morgan apparently doesn't believe is worthy of the role of "Master" anymore.
Case 3: In yet another tearjerker, Detective Gumshoe is gunned down while at the scene of a crime, and the accused is none other than Ema Skye.
Case 4: Finally, the unthinkable happens. Everyone's favorite Miles Edgeworth meets his untimely end, and Phoenix must defend an old "friend".. Franziska Von Karma.
Personally, I think the characters dying serves as much better closure than them clogging up Apollo's space any more than it needs to be. >_>;

Wow, someone took their PlotKiller-X medience today.
So you'd perfer to just kill off all these well-written and memorable characters just out of fear that they'll steal 'Apollo's precious spotlights'? I think that's taking things a bit too extreme, don't you think? People are angry enough that Phoenix got the Digimon Season 2 treatment, they'd be rioting if something like this happened... and I'd be joining them. *waves pitchfork and torch*
Besides, doesn't this seem rather redundant? You're worried about Apollo not getting enough space, yet you plan to fix it with a game featuring all the old characters as the stars? Also consider what impact this will have on the remaining characters. Losing friends like Maya, Gumshoe and Edgeworth could send Phoenix into a deep amount of despression and angst, and think of the tramatic effects it would have on Pearl, losing her cousin, her friends, and finding out her mother dosen't care about her anymore. If something like this were to happen, the writers would be forced to focus on Nick and Pearl's despression in losing all these people, and Apollo would be cast further into the shadows.

That's a little dark, but I like it. I also like "Theac"'s suggestion.
As another poster said, as much as I love the old gang (and I havent even seen Apollo yet or played T&T) those cases would mean Apollo is pushed further into the background.
I liked the idea of Pearls becoming a prosecutor though, could be interesting.

This would be one that officially closed the book on the old characters. Anyways, in the end, Phoenix truly resigns as a lawyer, and then considers taking his own life(lol emo plot twist) but Trucy comes by. You then have 2 options:
1) Stop him
OR
2) Wait and see
With 1, you have to then show something that'll make Phoenix stay. Present Mia or Trucy's profile at this statement.
Or, if you pick 2, or present the wrong profile, Phoenix kills himself, and Wright and Co. offices is torn down for good.
Or something like that.
Then the old characters could finally be out of the picture, besides Phoenix as support.
I keep seeing fangirls screaming how "EDGEY ISN'T IN ANYMORE BAWWWW!" so I figure, instead of him being in the way, just make a spinoff-sequal that officially closes the book on GS1-3.
I know it's a dumb idea, but at least it would stop the fangirls for wanting edgeworth in all games(At least after they finally accept he's dead. )

My god...ly arms....I think a few flashbacks can take better care of the old main characters' whereabouts than you can. It takes none of Apollo's spotlight, and pretty much satisfies everyone.

So by closure, you mean a total slaughter fest of almost every main character in the original series? What would be the point exactly? It would only leave fans depressed and hating the series. If anything, killing off Edgeworth would piss off the fangirls even more then just leaving him out of the story. GS1-3's plot ended with GS3. Phoenix and Ema just so happen to be involved in Apollo's series.

that she looks forward to them working together.The way I see, GS6 (you know it is going to happen) needs to have some amazing finale to wrap up the trilogy, so they will probably bring
back as the prosecutor. I mean, that would be ten years after the 
trilogy, and ten is a good, round number, so perhaps...But this is about GS5, isn't it? As much as I miss the characters from the original arc, I only want closure. Dead, or alive? Did Prosecutor

That's what I've been thinking too, on the whole 'Is Lana coming back?' matter. I can see her either being back on the force with a low-middleish rank, or having another job somehwere else and being a witness or a character like Penny Nichols or Viola Cadaverini; they help you in the case during the investigation and they don't actually testify.
But I love to see her back for some Skye sisters development 8D
