/facepalm

If there are problems, I need them all pointed out or they'll go ahead unchanged; I can't read the creator's minds, y'know. :P

As for the one you mentioned which just so happens to be mine, I'll move it to the revised section when I update the list later. I'm not going to bother Wooster to check this post until 24 hours with no objections or submissions. :)

*applause* @ BigFish - that smily is near perfect, but the mouth looked a little off. Hopefully now it's absolutely perfect:

Image

This version will be put on the submission list unless an earlier version is preferred or a better revision is made. :)

There we go. ^^

Neil smily > old Neil smily

Not going to comment on the Ashley one because I'm not familiar enough with the character.

Submission List moved to latest post.

That was deliberate - they'll only accept one version of it, and you yourself said that you prefer my one to your own. If you'd prefer it, I can change the list to include yours. :)

Nah, no need to. You're right about that. Your version was better.

It's just that people don't have the nerve to tell it straight to one's face that their work suck so they just totally ignore it. Which I think is even worse. [/idiotic rant]

You have a point, but I think the main concern is how easily negative feedback can devolve into flaming. That said:

Image

Image

My version is crap because for one the individual frames didn't get saved properly so bits and pieces of the image keep appearing and disappearing, giving it a really crappy, fuzzy look to it and for some reason it looks like she's jumping moreso than laughing; I tried too hard to capture the detail of the original animation and it just doesn't work.

Your version would look a lot better without the white robe elements (they actually looked like hands to me at first glance! XD) but the issue with yours is that you've got a head bob without the flab. It doesn't look right because you'll notice that in the original animation, her head doesn't move an inch; her body bobs up and down and the flab on her face simply reacts to that. There's also a chronic lack of shading which makes the image look a little flat and bleh. Most of that is easy to fix, but adding moving flab to the face is not.

Finding some kind of compromise between our two versions would likely yield the best result, so one of us should take a look into fixing this up, because let's face it, this is Bikini's signature animation and it's a crime to not include it in the smily bank. The key is to successfully caricature the face's flab movements.

Here they are for reference.

Well, as long as the feedback is constructive, I have nothing against it. Negative feedback is better than no feedback IMO.

Yeah, you are absolutely right. That was actually the first smiley (or one of the first smileys) I've tried to make so it definately is not the best one. I don't know how to shade and because the face is so small, the flabbing is impossible to add. I do prefer your version although it could be improved too.

I think in the lower, better smiley, the eyes are a pixel too high, the shaul over her head could taper inward at the bottom more like in the sprite, and maybe make the chin more obvoius, using shading or a line, your choice. If you're feeling even more ambitious, you could even make sure the cheeks of Bikini are curved more into the headscarf, for better fat definition, but that is picky on my behalf.
It's a good start to work from.

OK folks, I think I've cracked it this time. Just in case though, I kept the master files. Before anyone comments on the speed, check the original animation on CR; the blubber really does fly around that fast.

Image

Nice tweak there, BigFish. There's one final tiny tweak I'll make to that now; it's literally swapping two pixels around but it should make a lot of difference. I'll put them all in a row for comparison.

Can't decide between version 2 and version 4 in terms of the mouth, to be honest. Your thoughts?

Hmm... with the pixels unswapped, it looks like her teeth are shining, and it kinda makes the mouth more defined. Either version 3 or 4's fine with me although I like 3 better. Just don't use 2 or 1.

It'd workkkkk!!

Just copy and paste the CORRECT HAIR AT THE EXACT PLACEMENT for every layer.

And as for the other things (mouth, eyes, etc...), just eit it with the pencil tool using the size of 1 pixel brush.....

Pick colours and either use the pencil tool again OR use the fill bucket tool~

Heh, go figure~ >>

I agree, but BigFish has not expressed any interest in updating them. If I were to do any revisions on them, I'd do them from scratch, myself. Just because I've put something on the submissions list doesn't mean I expect it to get approved and uploaded to the site. :P

Ken wrote:

...XDno. However, it would look better animating the eyes; I'll do something about that. As for which base to use, I'm going to go with version 4 because the mouth looks the closest to the original image. ^^

EDIT: Image <-- Collab masterpiece. Nice work, guys. ^^

I see no issues with the Max one whatsoever. As for the Richard one, I don't see how it could be improved but I will agree that it looks like it needs improvement, which is a bit jarring.

After getting some sleep, I must admit that the eyes move around far too much, but that's easily corrected.

Having looked at the originals again, the common feature missing from both is their pointy chins. Unfortunately, to get the smilies to look accurate, you'd either have to make them larger or you'd have to thin the face so much that you couldn't put any clear facial features onto the smily at all. Unfortunately, their current state is the best you're ever going to get out of those. :/

Unless Kitties herself has any objections at this point, they'll be submitted as is.

Ya know, I think it might be the hair that makes Richard look too round; it's a bit smaller than in the other smilies, so it makes the erm, 'face' look more round.

That thought had occurred to me after I made my last post, and I took a quick look at the smily file; there's no way I could make any changes to it without starting from scratch, and to be honest it looks fine as it is. :/

I tried every speed setting imaginable on that Bikini animation; that one looks the best. The slower you make it, the more it looks like she's jumping, which was the exact problem the old one had. It's a fine line you have to walk.

TSS wrote:

If you think it could be better, there's nothing stopping you making it. I took one look at the original animation and the .gif file and thought to myself: "no way am I touching this one".

On a related note, trying to create a faithful replica of Shocked Apollo is also obnoxiously complicated, so I shelved trying to improve that one as well.

Bah! Upstaged by someone more experienced than me like I've been doing to other people!

I'm not sure why making the animation less similar to the original actually makes it look more similar and recognisable, but it does, so... ... ...K. XD It looks much better now, I have to admit.

I might actually put both versions on the submission list and let Wooster choose which one goes up; my version has a "ROFL" quality to it that Trucy's version lacks, and we have exactly 0 "ROFL" smilies. Any objections?

... *INSPIRATION* GANT'S SPAZ-MODE LAUGH!! SOMEONE MAKE IT!! That works too. :D

Image

I like! However, I think it would benefit from adding the deformed mouth sprite at the end of the seven-frame sequence from the original. Look it up and you'll see which one I mean. The smily doesn't look quite right without that frame.
