We all know the Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog (and company), PacMan, and Solid Snake. "Next-Generation" gamers have Master Chief, Kratos, and Marcus Fenix.

But, who do YOU consider to be a "Video Game Legend"?
Any amazing stories from a game that you just can't forget?
Had a soft spot for that certain game character (admiration/love/respect)?
Sure, we got these big-hit titles, but let's not forget the sleeper hits (Ico? Mister Misquito? Kain? Parappa!?), or even the "gone-but-not-forgotten" titles of yesteryears (Splatterhouse, Streets of Rage, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Rocket Knight Adventures/Sparkster, Revenge of Shinobi, etc.).

Please keep this topic strictly on the games themselves and NOT the creators behind them.
Yeah, it sounds a bit insane, but I'm trying to bring to light the old favorites or great titles that didn't get the attention it deserved.
Despite their fame, a lot of seasoned gamers (apparently) have never heard of games like Contra and Castlevania, let alone the Megaman series.
I don't know about you, but that just blows my mind.

Don't worry, I'll throw in my list after I collect my thoughts :yogi:

Just posting to point this out: pay attention to where you post your topics next time. This should have gone in the Police Station forum. Don't worry, I reported it so it should get moved soon.

That said, a "legend" is someone or something admirable or that leaves a significant mark on history.

It's a lot like Phoenix Wright (the character). He starts off as a no-name attorney fresh off the bar and steadily works his way up through the ranks and distinguishes himself as something more than just a lawyer. Defeating Manfred von Karma, toppling the tyrant Damon Gant, solving the mystery behind the flying magician, and just showing a knack for proving the impossible. His defining moment comes during 2-4 when, against all odds, he rises to the occasion and completely turns the tables on his adversaries; negotiating with an assassin, proving that the innocent was innocent, bringing the criminal to justice, and overcoming odds that any ordinary person would have backed down from. That's why his fall from the world of lawyers was such a devastating blow to his image.

Going back on topic, legendary video games are the ones that leave some kind of admirable impression or mark on society. I can think of one prime example: Super Mario 64. Prior to its 1996 release, the world of video games had never seen anything like it. You were given a simple task: Start at Point A, reach Point B. It was simple but it worked. You weren't given the freedom of completing random objectives at your leisure. You might have been given a few side-quests and branching paths but they all ended up at the same destination.

That's why Super Mario 64 was such a landmark in video games. It was the first game to create a full-scale 3-D world with open paths, full 64-bit graphics, and a massive 3-D environment. For the first time, you could explore multiple areas at your behest instead of being confined to level; you had the power of choice and that's one of the greatest things anyone or thing can possess. The freedom to do what you want and when you want. You weren't forced to collect every single item or defeat every single boss. Hell, the final boss only required you to obtain 70 Stars out of a total of 120. There was the freedom to choose whether to collect every star in "World X" or take a break and go to "World Y" or fight that one boss in "World Q".

In addition to this, the graphics were simply mind-blowing back in the day. Finally being able to run around and attack enemies from behind, or fully submerging yourself under water, or clinging to the edge of a cliff, platform, etc. was a thrill because it had never been done before, like how Phoenix Wright brought the DL-6 case to fruition; doing what had never been done before or "doing the impossible". Before then, no one had ever thought these things possible. Back in the 80s, people would have laughed off the idea of a 3-Dimensional video game. Even back then, after the Video Game Crash of 1983, people thought home video game consoles would never re-emerge, lost forever to time. Then Nintendo created Super Mario Bros. and jumpstarted the video game industry all over again with its groundbreaking gameplay, stunning graphical quality, and water-fluid controls. uper Mario 64 did all of that for the next generation by taking the graphics, gameplay, and controls and implementing them in the third dimension.

tl;dr - A legend basically leaves a mark of historical significance, sometimes admirable. Super Mario 64 is a prime example of this.

There are exceptions to the "admirable" quality but I won't go into that.

My mistake. I can't believe I messed that up!
Should I re-post this topic in the Police Station, or should I wait for a "higher power" to move it to the appropriate thread?

I would say all the characters from the Silent Hill series, Gordon Freeman from the Half-Life series, and Alma from the game called F.E.A.R.

Of course this is all my personal choices.

You want bigger legends than Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, you'll have a tough time lookin' for 'em.

Just to be clear, it's not JUST video game CHARACTERs, but any icons in gaming history? In that case, I have to post some that people missed:

-Nobuo Uematsu (Goes without saying. His work is amazing)
-Shigeru Miyamoto (Also goes without saying. Literally invented DK, Mario, and most of the other Nintendo characters to date)

Characters:

-Captain Falcon. When it comes to Nintendo, he's the Chuck Norris, the Leeroy Jenkins, the dude. Without him, you would've never knew if Nintendo was capable of producing a character whose single punch could cause an explosion that was visible from anywhere in the galaxy. Also, Solid Snake is a big fan of Falcon. Need I say more?

-Luigi. Okay, this guy is Nintendo's Gohan. He's afraid to fight unless possessed by emotion or otherworldly forces and when he does fight, he's usually shown to be much more powerful than any of the other heroes in the game he's in. *coughanycoughsupercoughsmashcoughbroscoughgamecoughevercoughmadecough*

Following that, Koji Kondo would be an "icon of gaming", too. Yet he isn't.

And Captain Falcon is no icon, he's a fad.

The icon-quality of Captain Falcon is the fad that hangs around him, which is scarily similar to Chuck Norris. It doesn't make him an icon of gaming - maybe of videogame forums, but not of gaming.
