I'm not big on cosplay, so I was wondering what gel is best for say, Phoenix, Zenitora, or Apollo? :phoenix: :zenitora: :odoroki: xP

My Phoenix and I swear by Aqua Net hairspray. Aqua Net is by far the most amazing substance on the planet and a necessary component of anything gravity-defying or surreal as far as hair goes. Ha!

Image

You should be able to find the hard-to-miss purple can in just about any CVS. A quick rake-through of any normal extra hold gel to smooth your hair down is the way to start. Then arm yourself with Aqua Net. Spray it liberally and use a blow dryer to melt the spray and sculpt your hair, repeating the spray-and-dry method until you've fused the style into place.

After that, your hair isn't moving. Anywhere. Promise. Wind, raves, heavy duty objecting, sleeping? Hahah! You're golden. Though it's a bit of a pain to wash out, and may be a bit sticky and take a few days to return entirely to normal afterward.

Ah,thank you. That was quite the sales pitch. If I didn't know better (which I actually don't), I'd say you were a salesman for the stuff. Thanks.

(On a related note, I'm wearing my Phoenix suit right now for no apparent reason.)

Haha, I wore most of my Edgeworth suit at my birthday party while hosting and mixing drinks, so I'm not one to shame random costuming. < 3

And you're welcome! Sadly I'm not making any sort of commission by plugging 80s never-move-again hairspray, haha, but I'm a converted fan. It's cheap and it worked wonderfully well for us at Anime Boston, both on my Edgeworth wig and Phoenix' natural hair.

You think it'll work for Gant's hairdo as well?

Also, will it work on a professional wig?

Also, if I do use it on a wig, how long will it hold before it will start drooping?

Aqua Net is fairly permanent. It'll work great on professional wigs. You might want to check out this awesome wig styling tutorial.

Yeah, but the thing is, Uryu is a metrosexual being. He is a master of sewing and embroidery even more so than a Quincy and for someone like him, hair is no problem. Well, I will do my best to emulate his hair. Which means that I must not only use the pictures from the front, but I must also use pictures of the side and back. The back will be difficult and the side seems impossible. However, i will do my best! Maybe I'll ask Oos to help me as she has a Sim of Damon Gant and she can help me by sending me screenies of the side and the back...

Oh, another useful wig styling tip is to get one of those little foam dummy heads. It's rather irritating when you want to start styling but have nothing suitable on which to prop your wig. I had to steal the virgin Mary figure from our yard nativity scene to get something that remotely resembled a human head (pardon the heresy). Unless you have a little sister or someone to boss around as a model, a dummy head is helpful.

Oh oh, and another tip is to get a wig cap. This helps keep the wig on your head, your hair out of the wig, and wig clean. You can make one by tying a knot in some pantyhose and cutting the excess foot part off. Handy putting on a wig tutorial link.

Gant's hair shouldn't be stiff like Phoenix's. His hair is springy and fluffy, sorta. That, opt for hairstyling mud or hair mousse.

Actually, I wouldn't recommend that. Hair gels and such are meant for real hair with natural oils and such. There's no telling of how well it'll last at a convention either. With cosplay, getting the look right should be the main priority. It's not as if people are going to run up, poke his hair, and criticize him for the stiffness anyways. This is his first cosplay as well, so I wouldn't complicate things more than need be. Most people use their natural hair with minimal styling for their first costumes since the hair is probably one of the most difficult aspects of an outfit to perfect. I wish you good luck, Hakuro, and want to see the finished product once it's ready. :)

What I meant was, cosplayers are compulsory to pull up an act of the character.
What if the event host asks Hakuro to do the :hair:?

Event host? I don't believe anyone other than an avid fan would even think about that animation, and they wouldn't even ask for that specifically. Most times people just come up and ask for a picture if they like the cosplay. Then, he can just pose like that and they take the picture. There will still be some degree of springy-ness if you spray it into place as well. As long as you don't "overcook" that forelock it can still bounce to a degree. Those gravity-defying spikes at the top will definitely need a good nuking though.

Oh yeah. I will still need Oos-chan's help with the side view. I also do plan on getting a wig cap as my hair is kinda big.

I also had access to a mannequin head long before the wig arrived. My mother used to make real sized hats and had a mannequin head (formerly a beautician's dummy) which she decided to call "Miss Kim". So until I decide to get the wig done, it shall stay on top of that mannequin's head looking eerily like Riku from Kingdom Hearts II at a glance.

Quick question - would it work on the Gavin Hair-Horn-of-Doom?

It does indeed. I used it liberally on my Kristoph wig and it worked quite well. What I did was take a plastic overhead projection sheet and roll it into a cone. Then I wrapped the hair around the cone and sprayed Aquanet like hell while holding the hair in place. Nuking via hairdryer was next, and then you just have to hold the drill in place while the rest of it dries. It does take a long time to fully dry though if you apply a lot, so you'll want to have at least two hours to devote to holding it in place since such a drastic curl like that will want to revert to its original shape. Once done, take out the cone frame carefully and voila.

Spoiler: Here's how it looks when I'm not wearing it
Image
It's a little worn since I just got back from a convention, but after a few touch ups it'll be pointedly perfect again. :)

idk..... I cosplay with my REAL HAIR (temporarily coloured, of course)~

Special dye that use certain reagent to remove it so that the colour won't run-off in contact with water, sweat or hair products.

Because I despise wigs, wigs are against our religion (even if a person is really bald).

Thanks, will keep that in mind for my friend's Kristoph wig (I work with my own hair).

Yowch. Your own hair into a Gavin drill? That may be a job for some pins and clips rather than Aquanet, because this stuff will not come off easily and you don't want to be sitting there spraying it into your hair two hours before showtime.

I'm willing to try anything at this point, Fraulein. *Grin*

But seriously, I'm a little desperate on that front.

If I were you, I'd twist your hair into the drill, spray, and then seal the end with some Got2B Glued Hair Glue (which is basically hair gel + steroids, lmao). That stuff works wonders, but it's difficult to wash out (getting some Got2B brand shampoo helps), so I'd use it only on the tip of the drill and on places that are falling apart.

OH! I'm cosplaying as Apollo with my real hair.

Spoiler: Picspls
Image

I used the got2b spiking glue and that freeze spray. I swear, it looks better IRL. D:

For the spikes, I kinda had to blowdry them in place after glopping a bunch of that got2b hair stuff on and then I twisted the ends to keep it all together.

This is what happened when I used this other crap. It was some sort of hair putty.

Spoiler: righthere
Image

Anyways, got2b totally rocks, but I had to shampoo it three times and load my hair up with conditioner. D: I couldn't afford any got2b shampoo/conditioner so I suppose that made it harder.

Since this thread is about HAIR... My hair is black, but I dyed a bunch of it this dark red a long while ago. A little while after, I tried dying it brown, but the brown didn't show up. Why? @____@ Also, I don't want to have to bleach my hair to get it a dark brown, but aghh. ; 3 ;

Okay. I picked up that Aquanet stuff (I felt a bit embarassed picking it up because my mother kept drilling into my head the fact that it's mostly used by old ladies... T_T), and i plan to try it out on the wig within the week.

Hmm, I may have to invest in some Aqua net. Sounds like cement from hell.

I'll be pulling off Phoenix soon, but I also need some black temporary dye. Any suggestions?

Try using black kohl? No.... if you sweat, the kohl would run down your neck & face..... ugh.

No idea, my hair is actually slightly brunette... but with hairstyling glob it turns black~

I did try styling my hair like April's when I had longer hair (for the lulz) & it turned out good (KK posted that pic without my permission!!)

I'd say go the alternate route and get a wig. You really don't want to be putting all of this random gunk into your real hair, now do you? Phoenix is actually a very difficult cosplay despite how simple his design seems at first. A black wig eliminates the need for dye and makes styling way easier since you can style from the back instead of trying to style from the front, and you'll need that extra edge with Phoenix's intimidating hair spikes. Wigs also save you prep time on the morning before a con since you wouldn't want to be styling at 3 AM to let everything dry or set. You can order wigs off Cosworx or Amphigory or Ebay (my personal favorite if you know the right sellers) or even go to a local costuming shop and see if they have any cheap wigs although their quality is not guaranteed. Sorry I don't have any suggestions on dye, but best of luck, and don't forget the jaggy eyebrows! :phoenix:

To be quite honest, I don't really like a lot of wigs. I prefer when cosplayers go for a "character with a touch of reality" look, and to me, it means actually styling my hair like Phoenix. I only plan on keeping it for one day at the moment, so I'm not too worried about waking up uber early. Aside from all that, I'm too broke to afford a wig anywhere near the quality I'd want. Thankfully, my sister is pretty tricky with hair styling, so she'll be helping me achieve the proper look. She's played through the first game and I got her some reference pics, so I think she can do it.

I really appreciate the idea, though. If I find that it's too troublesome to do it the way I want to, I'll probably use that as a fall-back plan.

Anyone else, good temporary black dyes? I actually used some spray-on stuff for Halloween a couple years ago, and it was nice because it washed out easily when I was done with it, but there wasn't nearly enough in the can and the quality of color could've been a little better.

LOL, my eyebrows are already so weird. ^_^;

Although I think using a wig would be the best choice (you can load it up with glue, so it won't droop at the end of the day), for color, I found this tip:
"Brush in temporary stage hair color from Ben Nye works well. I have used it for dancing (and on several actors for long shows). Just brush it in, let it dry, then give it a shot of hair spray to help seal it before going on stage. You can give it a test run to see how it works for you. Just don't put too much in, or it can take a really long time to dry."

Hope this helped.
