Players of advance wars will no doubt agree that the bright colourful characters and their interactions were a large part of the games charm.

However now, in the latest one all the previous CO's are dead and half of the roster of CO's you gain seem to end up dead anyway. I realise that AW is trying to portray a darker gritty image of war and it does that but I'm not sure whether it's better or worse than how it was before especially with the new CO zone system.

Though maybe I just miss Max Eagle and Kanbei :larry: maybe they took it too far with the gritty realism.

(Please bear in mind I've not finished it, I'm on stage 25 so spoiler tags if nessecary)

I haven't finnished it, either. It's kinda hard for me. Can't even remember where I left off.

I agree, it's a lot more different than the others. However, war's not fun in reality. I guess they decided to take it more seriously. Yes, some of the charm is gone, but the story's kinda well developed in this one.

Yet, I miss Andy and the others...

WAZZUP NOW, BLACK HOLE??!

o0o0 Thats Harsh even Black Hole didn't deserve that, especially since they have Hawke and Lash.

Hehe the irony, the new black hole folks expected Hawke to come back at the end of Dual Strike.

I miss the ultimate power of tag team CO powers :larry:

Yeah, I guess they tried to make it slightly more realistic. It was such a cool thing, though...

Not really~ I actually loved it, the plot was better, it was nice and fresh from the past games and I love the new CO's. (Though I do have a moment of silence for Sasha, Sonja and Lash. Everyone else can get crushed by meteors for all I care.)

Ah...The Game was great but I do miss the old cast. I do hope the next game will go back to the old crew.

Also, I was stuck for the longest time on Waylon flies again....Then my brothers beat it in 10 minutes.....Then I beat the final stage in 5!!! HA!!! Man...I can't believe if you have the right strategy you can beat the final stage in a really short time.

I do not view this game as a let down at all. It was very good but a rather radical change from the old games in term of story and art.

Why not a crossover?

Exactly my point. Like Zelda 2 on NES, it's different, but good! :jake:

I miss the old cast too, but since I bloody HATE many of the new COs in AWDS (especially Jake, that pseudo rapper bastard >_<) and found the tag attacks very entertaining, but also very unbalanced, I was pretty pleased with the breath of fresh air AWDC was. The story was also cool and entertaining, although I would NEVER recommend anyone who can understand German to play it in German. Every kind of violent or drastic language got cut out, they sound pretty lame and way too nice now. Eh.
Oh, did I mention that the AWDC soundtrack kicks ass?

So I play AWDC and AW2 and both games are very awesome and that way, I don't miss the old characters that much.
I'm just wondering how the next installment will be - I'm not even sure if it will be a direct sequel.

DoR was brilliant in my opinion. Yeah, I miss the old COs, but the gameplay was so greatly improved (with one or two omissions such as hard campaign) that it made up for it.

Yep, the gaming improved (CO's finally on the field! >.<) But the storyline isn't good enough, i still don't get how all those soldiers survived the meteors!

It's sorta boring, everyday i had to basically make myself play the games.

I hated the style, yes, but I thought the CO abilities were vastly improved (an area of effect instead of everyone, everywhere). Here's hoping they make a game that plays like this one in the old style.

I'm not sayin it's that much of a let down, just the odd niggling thing.
Some of the missions seem harder to me, like more than once I've started a mission, saw how ridiculously outnumbered I am and been like.

Screw this I'll do it later.

Also while having CO's in the field is awesome I think their powers are pretty unusual, Sigismundo in particular strikes me as a relatively useless CO and Carter (despite not having a power) is my favourite guy.

A crossover while amusing would be ridiculous I mean everyone is dead ugh...a solid shame still the new CO's are alright.
Though I agree with you Perrydotto, Jake is an ass and some of the new CO's weren't that great but they had Javier, who I was hoping would get a new game.

Still theres plenty scope for a sequel I think after all the world has been ruined, they can still rise up there might be other CO's who have survived and a big land war can begin!

Hopefully it'll be like some of the past CO's maybe survived the storm as well if there is a sequel Nell was lucky she might :will:

But yeah thats a solid point Ashxu. I found it weird how in a time of destruction and anniahlation there's massive cities and everything and enough resources and funds to build massive armies yet they cannot focus on rebuilding society? :yuusaku:

As dark as the game was supposed to be it still didn't work for me. Many of the character designs still didn't click (that guy in the unbuttoned blue shirt? ...yeaaaaah) and the lame doctor guy, although funny, made things seem a lot less serious. In a depressing post-apocalyse situation making unfunny-jokes was the last thing I'd think about doing.

I didn't get the new Advance Wars game not because of the change in style, but because the game play style lost it's appeal to me after Advance Wars DS. The Mechanics were perfect! But my tastes were wrapping more around the Fire Emblem series. But that's not why I'm posting.

Most of the complaints are about how the old cast has been dropped. I personally don't think that's a fair complaint. I mean, the series is known as Famicom Wars in Japan, and the cast was 'very' different from what we were introduced to in Advance Wars on the GBA.

And part of making new games is keeping it fresh. Do you 'really' want to have the Recover 3 HP as your starter move from Title 1 to title 50? Or would it be more interesting to have a different skill set? Or maybe introduce that skill later. People are going to pick the title up in the store and if they see the gameplay identical to what they saw last time a title in the series came out they're going to be disinterested because they already have a title where the same things were done, perhaps in a different story.

It really hurts me when people ask why Game Developers aren't creating new and innovative things, and then when they try to, it's bashed to no end for not sticking to the formula.

Well, the "cute war" was the trademark of the Famicom Wars range of games since, well, the beginning. It's the reason I got in the game. It'd be pretty much the same to suddenly have Goombas horrifically bloodily crushed in Super Mario games instead of the semi-happy "squish". I prefer my silly COs over the grimdark ones, thank you very much :<

I personally think that Days of ruin had the best gameplay. DS was ok but the new units were very situational and gimmicky, and the dual strikes were so game-breaking it really wasn't fun playing tag battles. Days of ruin really rebalanced the gameplay, despite some of the characters being near useless ie. Lin.
The new characters were fairly charmless, but after seeing the original gang 3 times I was getting a bit tired of them.

well i would've kinda liked it if you saw some of the surviving as grown ups or something cause i was really attached to the originals. The new darck conflict/days of ruin is a little too gray for me i like it for a long time and then i get a bit bored and ineed to give it a break but i could never put AWDS down that being said i would rather play dark conflict i love the map making in that game much better i would take making 50 maps and wi-fi over 3 maps and wireless any day. The bad guy in Dark conflict is MUCH better than AWDS's one but the storyline felt like they were confusing it with a fire emblem game (compare path of radiance to this)sorry if its just me i still really think its a good game the last chapter was harder than the last one in AWDS but the game was shorter than AWDS also. The game has no stealth units, carriers or neo tanks but its still a great addition to the franchise and i would love to see a sequel.
Sorry if it seems i hate this game cause i really do like it.
(oh and tag powers can be way over powered and broken so i'm kinda glad they fixed it)

Lin wasn't that useless was she? Her troops got a general boost

Now Sigismundo was useless!

Fire Emblem is a very good series but...I don't get how you mean they tried to make Dark Conflict like it. Maybe by making you want to keep them alive more because they level up?
One thing I think they should do for the next one is introduce a medic/engineer unit thats infantry but can heal/repair other units. I've always felt infantry have went overlooked in AW still the darker gritty look works considering the setting still I'm surprised Black Hole never picked up on a genius like Stolos with his own military force.

meh, the problem with Lin is to begin with her zone is the smallest, meaning her power is very slow and hard to charge up, and the power itself is pretty substandard, especially with the introduction of Flares.
Sigismundo is pointless for most maps, but in naval maps he is dominant, whereas there is a better option than Lin in every map.

I assume what Minoru meant with trying to be like fire emblem is that the story tried to be serious, talking about how war is wrong and stuff.

Maybe I just cared more about the environment that most but I thought the story from DS was fine, destroying the planet to satisfy one man's selfish needs.

And Tabitha has a smaller CO zone and Lili has a more useless effect.

Great game, and only one thing bugged me:

They didn't let you utilize CO powers until half-way through the game. Made the game feel incomplete. I mean, going against Forsythe, (one of the best chapters in the game), and no CO zone? Lame.

I would have preferred some more missions (It's only after Mission 10 does the game feel like a proper campaign), and although the story is cool in parts (Brenner, Lin, Greyfield&Waylon, and IDS), other parts were just yeck (WHERETHERESLIFETHERESHOPEWHERETHERESLIFETHERESHOPE got old after chapter 3).

The later missions were fantastic (some of the best in the series, although AW2 has the distinction of having personally the best campaign)

Caulder made up for the failure that was VonBolt (more like VonBitch).

The COs were the best and most well-rounded of the bunch (Penny's my favorite, although she can be cheap), and I loved the WiFi and overhauled system.

2nd best AW, with AW2 being 1.

I love you for this opinion ... I just love you. :godot:
I was also a bit disappointed that the CO powers got nerfed so much - It was fine for balancing purposes, but it also took some of the action out.
And it's sweet to see that I'm not the only one who liked AW2 and AWDC as number 1 and 2 of the series; I'm pretty pissed about how overrated AWDS is.

The tag system was fun, but DAMN UNBALANCED, most of the new COs were unimaginative and just thrown in to have more COs and the story was, although it was in its core like the games before, so damn annoying - The added pathos and JAKE DA GANGSTA (I wanted to kill him so badly everytime he opened his mouth ...) were just ... over the top and nothing more than a shameless try of making the series more "hip" ...
And honestly. Von Bolt is one of the LAMEST villains I've ever seen in a video game. Even Wario is cooler than him ...

Days of Ruin might actually be my favorite game of the series, gameplay-wise. I loved the new units and the newly BALANCED units. My tanks (aka light tanks) SHOULD be able to do ALRIGHT against enemy MD TANKS (or Heavy Tanks for the Euros out there) if they get the first strike in. In AWDS the Neotank just about trumped anything on the land, and tanks and MD tanks couldn't lay a finger on it. I also love the way they changed the carrier unit from AWDS and the addition of the bikes. The anti tank unit is meh, it's very useful, I just almost never feel like using it. And the newly redesigned battleships? OH YEAH! the firepower cut doesn't bother me one bit. I always loved the naval units, but the new battleship is the man.

Sure, I miss the old cast and the cheery music. In fact, to me, most of the music in AWDoR, except for a select few tunes, were really lackluster. But the gameplay makes up for it, not to mention a campaign story that's full of twists and even uses moral values.

And for the sake of debate, I never thought Lili (Penny?) was useless. Weather for three turns can really cripple enemy armies. she isn't so bad to use even in clear weather just for that power. I personally tried it out against the AI and I liked it, anyway.

Weather effects are a minor inconvenience, not devastating even then after the first time you use it, your troops NOT in the diminished CO zone are affected by the effects of the weather too. Plus I think on many maps the weather doesn't change unless it's set to random.

The new battleships I thought were somehow overpowered with the new fire AND move function, even if the firepower is diminished slightly they make absolutely brilliant support units for land-based assaults it seemed too much really.
In addition, the cruisers were satisfying in that they could shoot at a lot more things and carriers producing ship planes? AWESOME!
The new funtion of the APC (mobile construction vehicle) is brilliant it allows for much more strategy and it helps a lot more in an assault when you have an airport onsite just for repairs and resupplying.
I didn't mind the loss of neotanks but what I DID like is how they cut it out and made megatanks cheaper :will:

However the CO powers were horribly crippled....sometimes I feel it a lot more worth it just keeping the power to boost my CO zone as even if you do use it, its a very slight advantage you gain. Thats why I prefer Carter sometimes, he works in any unit, anywhere and affects anything :garyuu: a real morale booster.

what's funny about Jake, is in the japanese version he didn't have any of the "Gangsta" talk and was a very serious character. His headphones were actually for communication with the troops and not for listening to music.

sorry i should of explained myself a bit more
Spoiler: contains spoilers of the plot of AW:DC and FE:POR
the Will/Ed becoming the leader of the army felt like when Ike was forced to become the general of the united army because he bridged the gap of laguz and Beorc (or was that RD?). When the troops loose their moral in AW:DC and they say their gonna leave or something it felt like something that would happen in a fire emblem game although i forgot why i just cant point my finger at it*waits for an FE fan to come and point out why*
Greil err i mean O'Brian/Brenner dies and Ike whoops i mean Ed/Will becomes the new leader ^^;;(ok sorry if i seemed a bit rude)
alo about the Jake thing....i'm so going to learn japanese and live in japan and i liked Rachel, Sasha and Javier i did'nt mind Jake too much although i would like his japanese peersonality better and Grimm i just couldn't like oh and i didn't like Von Bolt as a villain and Kindle as the second biggest villain didn't seem to menacing either.

I got a laugh out of the Megahurtz jokes from the robot CO.
Still Path of Radience was awesome and...I might be able to shed some light on the FE thing you said.

According to Mei Ling commenting on Marth in Brawl, he was betrayed by a good friend or something.

Never the less its not that much like FE and in it's defense there's very few purely original things anymore.

Hm, I disagree. weather effects might not be totally devastating (nothing really is in DoR/DC besides Caulder and Tabitha) but they're overlooked and rather effective. Rain brings fog of war and decreases vision by one. If you aren't expecting fog, you won't have many recons built and your vision will be really shot. This allows Lili to move her troops around, even forwards, with a less chance of being countered very much on the opponent's next turn. Yes, Lili can only see one more space than the opponent through the fog, but 1) one space can be a lot and 2) the rain starts on her turn, so she can take advantage of the woods/mountains before anyone else can, and no one will know where she moved her units. Basically, use the fog as cover for your advance and break through the enemy lines.

Snow is probably the hardest weather to use to your advantage, but it is still effective. If there's a stalemate at the front lines, snow can help you inch forward and gain ground. since enemy movement is reduced by one, Lili can move one space closer to the enemy without fear of being attacked. you can use this to outmaneuver/outflank the enemy. also really helps air battles; fighters like to stay just barely out of range of enemy fighters. using snow you'd be able to get the ever-important first strike on the fighter. in summary, snow helps because it makes it easier for you to get the first strike on your enemy or outmaneuver them. you can also use the snow to cover your retreat if you're getting beat down on; to stage a "strategic withdrawl." the snow makes your troops harder to chase, and it is easier for you to cover the retreat with indirect units.

sandstorms are the most obvious. what's not to like about the enemy taking a 30% hit in firepower? it's like when kids go to play baseball at the park and a girl comes up to bat. "everyone move in, she's a girl, she hits like a girl!" attack with less fear of the counterattack.

And no, Lili's troops are safe from weather no matter where they are on the map. they don't have to be in the CO zone to recieve that benefit. try it out, it's true. her CO zone is only for the default CO zone attack/defense bonuses and so that a battle one of her units fights 10 squares away from the CO zone won't contribute to CO power meter :P

I'm aware most like to play their VS games with 100% "clear" weather, but in my experience, 3 turns of a weather effect that your own units are immune to is really helpful. even more helpful than 3 HP healed or +2 indirect range.

PS. I never thought I'd be discussing advance wars in depth on this website XD
and the weather effects I'm talking about are the ones in DoR/DC, not AW1, 2, or DS.

lol. I haven't played in months, but it's like riding a bike, I guess. I've not yet forgotten the game or its strategy and I'm not sure I ever will. when I was a middle schooler playing the first advance wars, I actually thought to myself, yeah, I could see myself playing this game forever. so far, it's turned out to be true... XD

I've made myself available for wifi games with other CR players in the past, but I've been busy like never before since school started, so I'm never available now.

I haven't played in months either...I know most of the things but It would take me a bit to get back to normal. And I know how you feel about being to busy....I should start playing again....And find AW2....

Isn't this off topic?...

Undoubtably off topic but until I see an Advance Wars general discussion I'm not going to object.

@Massive post.
Now that you put it that way that does sound kinda effective.
I always assumed Lili's troops never got a stat boost cause it's not listed in her powers but since ALL her troops are immune to weather and...admittedly I forgot what Sandstorms did 30% damage reduction. Still I can see why Lili is worth using now...plus her innocence has a certain charm to it...if only she didn't carry the demonic teddy bear.

Still I generally like to play with random weather, makes it more....interesting...of course it can be horribly unfair should the rain come on for just one part of a day leaving one player without sight while the others can assault him but...thats just how it is. I find 100% clear weather boring so I suppose Lili is quite good....though I'm still surprised she gets a stat boost.

Any unit inside a CO zone gets +10% offense and defense, plus any other CO zone bonuses. So, let's take Carter/Forsythe for example (who is another favorite CO of mine, anyway). His units get 20% offense and defense in his CO zone.
10% offense and defense comes from Carter's CO bonuses, just like Tabitha has 50/50, Carter has 10/10.
The other 10% offense and defense comes from being in the CO zone, every CO zone has that bonus added on to it.

The reason your units don't seem invincible with 20% defense anymore (in older games, Kanbei's units had 20% more offense and defense, remember how hard they were to kill?) is because they changed how defense is calculated, but I'm not exactly sure how. It might have been that they just added a flat 10% onto defense in older games if someone had +10% defense, and instead made it multiplicative (rather than additive) for DoR/DC, but again, I'm clueless and it's just a guess.

And I like random weather too, but usually it isn't used in more competitive matches, where they use "clear." Though I'm not quite so good to play against the people who play more competitively, so, meh :P

YAY! Carter is also awesome my favourite CO. I'm a little disappointed about his lack of CO power but his CO zone compensates meaning he works anywhere :will: .

I can't play competitively as the wireless signal in my house doesn't work on my DS :larry:

Nevermind and it's true that most units aren't invincible anymore (Kanbei was bloody invincible, I teamed him up with COlin for mass production) though just playing as Finn on a 4player map and using his bad company....makes air units almost invincible.
Even if Megatanks aren't the invincible weapons they used to be it makes me value them more, pop them into cities for quick repairs, though I still think there should be an "engineer" unit for on-site repairs plus....well they're cheaper so easier to produce though oddly enough they made infantry more expensive.

I just picked this up yesterday to keep me distracted from Let's Go to the City-spoilers, and before I knew it I had spent 5 hours completing three missions. A safe indicator of gaming greatness. I can't really say whether it's a letdown from the previous games 'cause I only played the first few missions on Advance Wars GBA, but I do know that the setting is pretty neat. The post-apocalyptic world looks nice and suits the game very well. Too bad making the game "mature" also meant bring in a lot of moral speeches about really childish issues -we're not talking Freud analysises here :yuusaku: But I can only guess that similar morals were present and correct in the previous outings -judging from the cute style it's about friendship or somthing :hobohodo:

Well, BizarrOle, the first two games didn't really focus on anything morally orientated ... The pathos and moral stuff started with AWDS, the third installment. And I found it really annoying in AWDS - AND in AWDC. Although Jake was way more annoying than Ed/Will.
